Which sustainable coffee do you drink at home? And are there actually alternatives to coffee?
Whether you have a coffee Addict whether you don't like coffee, there is good news. Things happen in coffee country that are better for the planet and your health. We made a list of sustainable coffee for home use. And with the latest coffee alternatives that are a lot healthier than 6 addictive cups of caffeine a day. Which brands with a sustainable mission and healthier alternatives are definitely worth trying?
Pioneers in the field of sustainable coffee, those guys. Not just in terms of beans: the Koffiejongens were the first in the Netherlands with fully biodegradable coffee cups. You can even throw them in your compost bin or with the organic waste. The cups are made from plants and they simply fit in your standard Nespresso machine. Because they are biodegradable, you can throw them on your compost heap after use (time for a new hobby). Within six months, the cups will then turn into food for your plants and other greenery.
Sustainable expensive? That's not necessary. At least not at De Koffiejongens! Not the cheapest on the market, but just below the average, which is about 25% cheaper than what you see on the shelves.
Let's start right away with the most stylish. Because the atmosphere surrounding a coffee brand also counts. Similar to a good bottle of wine. DAK Coffee Roasters is an Amsterdam coffee roaster with Canadian roots. DAK's mission is to deliver the highest quality coffee. According to DAK, the coffee farms that supply the best green coffee beans also have good ethical values. Because good coffee is good for everyone. And so the farming families can also lead a good life from their work. Anyway, you get it, coffee that tastes delicious and is good for the farmers. Did you think that was all? Nope. DAK is also committed to leaving the smallest possible ecological footprint through recyclable packaging, CO2-reducing projects and recyclable shipping boxes.
You buy the coffee from DAK Coffee Roasters online through a monthly subscription or simply in the shop. Where they also have the most stylish coffee supplies such as an aeropress and Chemex.
Anyone who is in for 100% organic coffee says, Anne&Max. This delicious coffee comes all the way from Peru! The cups are biodegradable and are sold in tubes containing ten cups. Fortunately, they also fit in our old, trusted Nespresso machine, so buying a new machine is not necessary for these cups. The cups have the flavor notes of red cherries, hazelnut and dark chocolate.
The espresso from Anne&Max is a single origin coffee. There is one direct trade set up with coffee farmers in Peru. Cultivar, set up by a Dutch woman, is the local exporter. She ensures that the coffee beans end up at the Keen coffee roaster. This means the chain is short and they know in the Netherlands that everything runs smoothly there!
Some people like to grind their own beans. The other goes for convenience. We won't judge. However, those polluting coffee cups are a disadvantage. Of course that could have been done better. Halo has coffee cups for your Nespresso machine, but the cups can be composted at home. Another eureka moment. About 60 billion coffee cups are produced worldwide every year. Of these, roughly 20% are recycled (with the necessary environmental impact) and the rest: on the waste mountain. Ouch yes. The Halo cups are made from sugar cane waste. And the result is a home compostable coffee pod. Halo is available in several flavors, all from different origins such as Ethiopia, India, Honduras and Brazil.
The Dutch brand I Am Caps also makes coffee alternatives. Delicious for those who weren't into coffee anyway. Or for those who really have their daily tax after one cup of caffeine. I Am Caps has ready-made cups for your Nespresso machine. And instead of coffee, the cups contain matcha, chai, ginger, beetroot and turmeric. To drink as is or to finish with your favorite milk. Of course, each with its own healthy capabilities. For example, turmeric has a healing effect, matcha gives you a gradual boost and beetroot has many antioxidants. And there is your pink, green or orange healthy one I Am Caps latte ready to drink.
The global coffee market is huge. Naturally, most of the work lies with the coffee farmers. However, the distribution is such that 85% of the coffee value ends up with the multinationals and the farmers have to make do with 15%. While these multinationals only add 2% added value. The rest is profit. With fair trade coffee, farmers already receive a higher price for their hard work. And fairchain goes one step further. Income from the beans increases, techniques for better and cleaner production are learned, education for the children of the families is arranged, and more. So you want regular good coffee. Then buy coffee from a good source. In doing so, you contribute to a better distribution in this billion-dollar market.
These brands are committed to a better distributed and more sustainable coffee market: Moyee Coffee, Fair Trade Original en Coffee to Stay.
Also a good substitute for coffee: ground chicory root. The Pacha brand is on the office shelf (but there are several brands). It is still somewhat bitter, but also has a nutty undertone. No caffeine, and simply dissolve in your hot water or milk (substitute).
Chicory (chicory also belongs to the chicory family) is a source of inulin (which is a natural prebiotic), and inulin in turn strengthens the body's immunity, protects the intestines and helps remove toxins in the body.
Northern Wonder makes coffee-free coffee. That certainly sounds contradictory: the coffee looks like coffee, tastes like coffee and you can just brew it as you normally would. How they do this at Northern Wonders is a fairly technical story. Compare it a bit with meat alternatives: that was also in its infancy and there are now all kinds of alternatives for that. Northern Wonder also gets to work in this way. From their lab they work together with Wageningen University & Research and other leading food technology partners to see which molecules are building blocks to imitate that coffee taste.
Northern Wonder has cups and filter coffee, plus they are working on coffee 'beans' as we speak.
