Bakers + Bakkies: these are the best artisan bakers in the Netherlands
More and more people in Amsterdam know the peeps van Ulmus bakery for the most delicious sourdough breads and ditto pastries. Highly recommended in the Baarsjes. In North Bakery Ex in no time a concept. You can find this favorite on the Waddenweg and you can go there for really good bread, eggs, tasty sandwiches (kimcheese) and sweets (currant buns and boluses). Not really Amsterdam, but it's only a 15 minute drive (or less even if you're coming from Amsterdam West), and Bakery Mama must be mentioned. No fewer than 100 types of bread and other baked goods here. It did open in Amsterdam, in the Jordaan Saint Jean, a stone's throw from the beloved Toki. Both businesses 'do' coffee in such an impressively trendy, uber-styled way (without the arrogance). The team behind Saint-Jean previously ran Rustic Pastry: vegan high quality goodies that you could order via the online shop. Al is our most favorite baker Levain et le vin. After all: perfect sourdough bread and the perfect natural wines. O! And in Amsterdam North, in addition to Bakery Ex, we are also big fans of Kometen. Just read here: Comet Bread Café.
For sourdough with coffee (to go) are with you City bakery As Good. 10 cozy meters on the east side of the city. They have tasty treats from it, among other things Golden pheasant (delicious chocolate mousse)! Grams is in turn sold out within a few hours by default; going early is a must. On Sunday you sail to Fort Nine in Amsterdam West: the only bakery with (good) croissants and fresh breads that also bakes on Sundays. Want to get a decent croissant in the center? On to Bakery Wolf. Also don't forget to check the cinnamon bun to try.
The best news for all people in 070: after favorite Pumpernickel there is a new nice place for your bread supply: Bartine. You know, that delicious coffee and lunch place near the station - towards the city. The team behind Bartine started baking during the lockdown and they liked it. So good that they are now opening a new building in The Hague's Zeeheldenkwartier with a bakery on one side and a café Slash shop on the other side.
Do you dare to leave the capital? You will find it in Rotterdam Das Brot, a small shop where you can shop for delicious sourdough breads. The sandwiches of the day are also perfect for a quick lunch to go. It is a pearl, yes. Das Brot makes it sound German, but it is not necessarily so. This small-scale bakery is located in Rotterdam, where they sell the best sourdough breads. The editions are small and there is a lot of love in what they make. In addition to their own storefront, they are also often on display Rotterdam Harvest Market (tip!). In addition, a small selection of natural wines are also for sale here. Still a nice combination, isn't it, that wine with bread.
June Bakery is located in the green meadows in a more than beautiful Burgundian specialty store, Eric's Landwinkel. As soon as you walk into the store, the smell of fresh sourdough bread, French baguettes, croissants, cardamom buns is unmissable. Baking takes place all day long, making all the goodies fresher than fresh. The open bakery allows you to see how everything is prepared by hand. The bread and pastries are inspired by French and Scandinavian baking traditions, where simplicity, quality and high-quality ingredients come first. Eric's country store also has a backyard and a greenhouse where you can enjoy your cup of coffee in peace with a warm croissant from the bakery from Monday to Sunday.
The baker of… is located in Hoorn, on the nicest square in the (very nice) village. Or town of course, city! Next to the delicious bakery is 'Koffie van'. Well, you understand, a match made in heaven.
More fun in cozy Hoorn? On to Ysbrandt Boutique Hotel (and in that article we immediately include some great tips in Hoorn slipstream along – you're welcome).
Do you need another good reason to visit Delft? Then you have it now: Mr. Leffers in Delft is great hot & happening and more than enough reason for a walk around the block on its own. Since 2021, Mister Leffers has been in a larger business (than before, they are not completely new) and there is more than enough space and capacity to meet the increasing demand. On to Mr. Leffers, Delft, for everything from canele to delicious focaccia.
Let's not forget our friends in Brabant for this list, because very good bread is also baked there! You will find it in Breda Real bread. Like them sub line sounds: “Here we bake as before, with only 3 ingredients: sea salt, water, flour”.
Open: Tuesday – Sunday

For a long time, Leiden did not really have a top performer when it came to small-scale bakeries. To Mamie Gourmande made her appearance in the middle of the city. Cakes, breads, macarons, but above all… the perfect almond croissant!
