New (and amazing) hotel in Cape Town: Gorgeous George Cape Town
Did you know that as we speak we are busy with the second edition of our Cool Cape Town guide. Although 'guide' is almost a bit too disrespectful, if we say so ourselves. It is your purest Cape Town and surrounding area Bible, and we are very proud of it. Part 1 has been updated (although it was hardly necessary) and part 2 is an addition: Cool Cape Town Kids! That's right, on holiday to Cape Town with the whole family. Cool Cape Town Kids purchase it as a supplement to Cool Cape Town, or separately (but then you will miss out on a lot of holiday fun) and although it obviously contains plenty of addresses that are fun for the kids, the book also has a number of places that are perfect for date night (and tips on how to get a babysitter). A new one from Cape Town that we didn't want to withhold from you is this: the new boutique hotel Gorgeous George Cape Town.
Oh may! Bear with us, because Cape Town has had it since we published the first one Cool Cape Town we still got a beautiful hotel! Gorgeous George it's called: what is in a name. It is cool there, and contemporary and artistic and crazy. A mini version of the Soho House group, unsurpassed in terms of design for years (read: we cannot make a greater compliment). And surprisingly enough, Cape Town did not yet have a hotel like this: an ingenious industrial, colorful hotel for all ages.
Within the doors of our George (we may say George), the 18th century grandeur of the building, the raw industrialism of central Cape Town and international design are combined in a stunning way. 'The building', we say, but actually it is two buildings that were connected earlier, in the 1940s. One Art Deco, the other New Edwardian. The two were reunited and now have 20 hotel rooms and 12 beautiful suites, connected by concrete, steel, Victorian elements, Moroccan cushions, contemporary design, books and plants everywhere and African trinkets. You enter through historic copper doors: well begun is half done, George must have thought. Then you almost immediately encounter Delft blue ceramic tiles that form a map of Cape Town.
In the rooms themselves, that color palette of blue, white and mountain green continues nicely, alternating with pale red Persian carpets and light rattan chairs. On top of the roof there was - hello hey - an awesome roof terrace with swimming pool. It is a green oasis, surrounded by the hushed sounds of the city. It doesn't get any better than that, we think. If you decide against a room, you are not actually allowed to go onto the roof terrace (we did, where there is a will…), then the Gorgeous George restaurant is still gorgeous enough for a visit.
Within five minutes you walk to the colorful Bo Kaap and actually all the highlights of the city center of Cape Town are within walking distance (although, to be honest, the address of Gorgeous George is not the most gorgeous location - but hey, that's inside, and on top the roof terrace, as mentioned, well done). Children are welcome, but the roof terrace is adults only... Too bad, but again: where there is a will...
