Province of Alberta is located in the interior of Canada. KLM flies daily and directly to Edmonton and Calgary in the winter. Two cities with plenty to do and a great starting point for one roadtrip through the Canadian Rockies. You can fly round-trip to the same city or round-trip to one of the two cities. This immediately gives you a beautiful, diverse route through nature reserves and past entertaining cowboy towns and ski resorts.

The highlight of the trip was the route through Banff Nature Reserve and Jasper Nature Reserve. Icefields Parkway is beautiful in summer and winter, when the route lives up to its name. You drive on 227 kilometers of snow-covered roads through the high mountains, past frozen lakes and endless forests. With a bit of luck you will see elk, lynx, caribous, mountain goats and more impressive animals along the way. Bears are certainly there too, but you mainly see them - hopefully far away - in the summer. Take your time enroute to make stops at the highlights below.

A busy mountain town in the summer and a (little bit) in the winter upscale) ski resort. The town of Banff is located in Banff Nature Reserve. There is a nice shopping street, many cozy restaurants and plenty lodges and hotels. On your road trip, spend a day – or two – here to ski, dive into one of the hot springs and take the Banff Gondola for breathtaking views of the Rockies.

If you fancy some action: the Canadians are not averse to a helicopter flight above breathtaking nature. Rockies Heli Canada offers winter adventures where you first fly in the helicopter and then go snowshoeing or walk on a beautiful frozen lake with air bubbles. You can experience such an epic adventure for as little as €200. Provided the weather conditions are good, because there will be no flying in fog or bad weather. In this way, fate also decides a little about your adrenaline.

Rockies Heli Canada

Icefields Parkway has the nicest sceneries en route. Under which Athabasca Glacier, which is next to the road and therefore the easiest glacier to visit. In the summer the view is even more impressive with the colossal white-ice-blue colossus that moves through the gray rock - you are above the tree line here. In winter it is one big white valley but still nice to see. Ten minutes away, also from the road, you can Tangle Creek Falls to see. There is a parking area to view the cascading waterfall. This frozen waterfall and Weeping Wall are well-known places for ice climbing.

Then there is Sunwapta Falls with a drop of 18 meters which is said to be the most beautiful waterfall in Jasper Nature Reserve. Goats and Glaciers Look Out is a higher viewpoint with a beautiful view of the mountains, glaciers and ice-blue river. And that one goats? It is a well-known spot for mountain goats to hang out. 🙂 🙂 Athabasca Falls is a beautiful one canyon where in winter you can see ice caps and swirling azure water. Definitely worth a visit.
