Touring the world in the Netherlands: the Tony's x Barts Boekje route

WWe're not going home yet. Not for a long time yet, because we're playing out the Dutch summer! Twenty-eight percent of the Dutch are staying home this summer. Well, not exactly home. In their own country. The Netherlands is full of place names and hotspots that carry a color within them. Groenlo. De Gele Kanarie. Witteveen. Zoutelande. And let's immediately link those places to a flavor or color of the Tony's bars.

So we did the opposite of what you normally do: we started at the chocolate aisle. Ten bars, ten colors, and for each color, we looked for a place in the Netherlands where that same color is in the name. A village, a hotel, a beach bar, a two-star restaurant—if the name fits, it counts. Then we turned it into a route you can drive in a single loop, with the addresses you need to visit at every stop. Sleeping, eating, coffee, and at a few stops, a very good reason to stick around a bit longer.

1. Dark milk (light blue wrapper) Café Bleu, The Hague

1. Dark milk (light blue wrapper) Café Bleu, The Hague

Light blue and The Hague? Absolutely. Off to Café Bleu on Noordeinde. The family behind the company draws their inspiration from the blue Mediterranean Sea and the Turkish roots from owner Fero, who is originally from Antalya. The menu features homemade favorites such as the signature cheesecake (tip!) and artisanal sandwiches, alongside freshly brewed coffee and organic matcha. Yum.

Also nice: the ice cream from Nice, made from real fruit and 100% organic. And the interior is… That’s right, bright blue, of course. And this is what the wrapper of Tony's dark milk looks like. Delicious!

We wouldn't be Team Barts Boekje if we couldn't come up with many more awesome spots with a (light) blue edge. Blue sky in Amsterdam is an absolute classic with no fewer than two Michelin stars. According to Ron Blaauw, dining out should be a celebration without too much fuss. Ron Gastrobar (with branches in Amsterdam, Ouderkerk, Laren and Bloemendaal) is his interpretation of this. And also Tasting room 't Blauwe Theehuis Right in the middle of Vondelpark in Amsterdam is a no-brainer, of course. Here you'll find freshly tapped beers from Brouwerij 't IJ and much more tasty food.

2. Milk nougat (yellow) De Gele Kanarie, Rotterdam

2. Milk nougat (yellow) De Gele Kanarie, Rotterdam

A quarter of an hour away, in Rotterdam, the yellow wrapper is waiting for us. At Brewery De Gele Kanarie, everything revolves around beer, and the name is a nod to Rotterdammer Martin van Waardenberg: by 'a yellow canary', he simply meant a lager.

There are two locations. On the Goudsesingel (corner of Mariniersweg) sits the large beer café with a terrace, where their own beer is brewed in the cellar; through a glass floor near the stage, you can look directly at the barrels. The second is located on the Binnenrotte, opposite the Markthal and the Laurenskerk, and is more of a city café: perfect for breakfast, a toasted sandwich, or drinks. A true beer and food paradise at both locations.

3. White raspberry popping candy (pink wrapper) Roosendaal

3. White raspberry popping candy (pink wrapper) Roosendaal

We drive on to Brabant and end up in Roosendaal. Roosendaal? Yup! Breda and Den Bosch may be absolute favorites, but we shouldn't forget a few top spots in Roosendaal either. You can enjoy a wonderful night (or two) at Wellness Hotel Otium, where you immediately dive into the wellness area at Vitae Wellness Resort. And yes, absolutely get a pink scrub right away too. For those who prefer to stay outside the wellness area: get strawberry ice cream at Gerda's Ice Cream Farm is at least as good a plan. And you can also sleep at B&B Filion's Place. Still looking for coffee or lunch? Hop over to STICK for the best coffee and acai bowls! And Lodge. And then to make the party complete, we would say: Mazeltov for a night out and Hayhouse For a long table and good food. With these addresses, a day (or weekend) is easily filled. A white raspberry popping candy feast!

Looking for real pink, pink, and more pink? Then drive a little further into Brabant towards Breda. At The Cake Room The team knows exactly what to do with this lovely color. Oh, and by the way, they know everything about brunch, lunch, sweets, and baby showers too.

4. Milk caramel sea salt (orange) Zoutelande

4. Milk caramel sea salt (orange) Zoutelande

There is only one place in the Netherlands that pairs perfectly with that oh-so-delicious (and a favorite among many) caramel sea salt bar from Tony's: Zoutelande, of course. After all, the sea salt in this bar really is the star of the show. So, what you absolutely cannot miss in this capital of the 'Zeeland Riviera'?

We can think of some obvious things: hopping from beach bar to beach bar, eating kibbeling, getting a breath of fresh air in the dunes, or seeking out something more active like (kite)surfing. And, of course, listening to Zouteland by BLØF all day long. repeatWhere will you find us in Zoutelande? Probably at the beach pavilion. The Beach Fool, just outside Zoutelande itself. Especially during Zilt op Zondag (oysters for a euro) or during Mussel Monday (Zeeland mussels for 25 euros). Yum. And where do we sleep? In one of the lodges of Duinhotel Tien TorensYou are guaranteed to come home recharged from this.

And there is more orange… We’ll put them on a list for you. A number of places where the name actually says it all. Think of: the always beautiful town of Oranjewoud in Friesland (you won't get much further from Zeeland), Orangerie De Pol in Doetinchem (for delicious dining in their greenhouse) and Orangerie Elswout in Overveen (for the perfect slow Sunday lunch).

5. Pure (dark blue) Den Bosch

5. Pure (dark blue) Den Bosch

We knew what to do with dark blue, too. Off to one of Team Bart's favorite cities in Brabant: Den Bosch. First, drop off the suitcases at Boutique Hotel De Blauwe Pauw, a small-scale hotel in a monumental building, within walking distance of the city center. The six rooms are all decorated differently and each has its own colored wallpaper. However, every bathroom has the same blue tiles (perfect for our theme).

So after that, into the city, to eventually plop down at the restaurant. The Blue LockHere, at the edge of the (blue, yes indeed) water, surrounded by greenery, you eat the most delicious regional dishes from the polders of the Maaskant. Perfect for lunch, drinks, or dinner. A whole day of blue, Bosch style.

6. Pure almond sea salt (light green): Erloom

6. Pure almond sea salt (light green): Erloom

We're cheating a little with the light green color. We aren't choosing just one place, but a collection. Namely, the outdoor restaurants (hidden in the greenery). We simply love them. And who can blame us? Erloom in Hilvarenbeek, Bij de Tuinman in Hilversum, Cul Sec in Culemborg, Zacht Staal in Beverwijk, Proeflokaal De Serre in 's-Graveland, and Kaslokaal in Oostkapelle. Dining among the vegetable garden, eating in a greenhouse, surrounded by greenery, or with the Zeeland countryside all around you. Sign us up.

Would you rather have a bit more city than nature? The Green Elephant in Amsterdam East therefore fits well with the green color, and here you will find something for everyone. And in Utrecht, the team of The Green House Exactly what the name promises (pure, organic, and sustainable cooking). So, two extra addresses for green enthusiasts.

7. Milk (red) City Brewery RoodNoot, Utrecht

7. Milk (red) City Brewery RoodNoot, Utrecht

Head to Utrecht for the color red. Specifically, right on the border with Leidsche Rijn. There stands a monumental farmhouse from 1880 that looked quite drafty just a few years ago. Since then, it has been transformed into Stadsbrouwerij RoodNoot. The old stable became a cozy tasting room with a sustainable restaurant, brewing kettles stand in the hay barn, and chickens roam the yard while the horses graze in the meadow. They cook with regional products and fresh ingredients from their own garden, and the terrace is perhaps the sunniest in Utrecht and the surrounding area.

Rednut It is set up as a social enterprise: people with a psychiatric background are provided with a safe workplace here and the time to reintegrate at their own pace. Patience is the key word, just as with the brewing process itself. The fact that there is also a house beer called RoodNoot, a light-red Vienna lager that is fresh and bitter, brings everything full circle.

Please note that Google Maps sometimes directs you through streets that no longer exist, as the brewery is located in the middle of a neighborhood under construction. Park at P+R Berlijnplein (evening rate from 19 PM) or in front of the cinema.

And would you like to make a whole weekend out of red? Then drive on to the Veluwe, to Hotel Landgoed Het Roode Koper in Leuvenum. An estate hotel in the middle of the woods, with thirty rooms, a large garden, and a name that refers to the red, copper-colored pine bark in the area. From the hotel, you can walk straight into the Leuvenumse Bos, and the Ermelose Heide is also just around the corner. Back on the estate, the amazing restaurant awaits, and for those who aren't tired yet after walking: there is a tennis court, a heated outdoor pool, and a sauna.

8. Milk hazelnut (dark green) Groenlo

8. Milk hazelnut (dark green) Groenlo

For some greenery, we travel to Groenlo in the Achterhoek. Between the old city walls (and the greenery surrounding the city), you will find enough places to make it at least a green, uhh, good day. At well-located You can come here for lunch, dinner, high tea, or even a boat trip. The team is truly jacks of all trades. At Erve KotsJust outside Groenlo, you come for the Achterhoek atmosphere (read: down-to-earth conviviality) and regional products. You can also enjoy a wonderful overnight stay there. For something tasty to go we stop at Food shop Vier, although you can also comfortably plop down on the terrace.

9. Milk pretzel toffee (purple) Sallandse Heuvelrug / Holterberg

9. Milk pretzel toffee (purple) Sallandse Heuvelrug / Holterberg

The picture might make you think of France for a moment, but nothing could be further from the truth. You don't actually have to cross the border at all for purple heather. In August, the Sallandse Heuvelrug around the Holterberg turns purple, giving you a little piece of the French Provence right here in Overijssel. Put on your hiking boots and stomp straight through the blooming heather, with views of the hills and forests along the way. Those who want to see a bit more can hop on a bike from the Holterberg. There are more than enough great routes straight through the Salland landscape.

10. White (white) Witteveen (Drenthe)

10. White (white) Witteveen (Drenthe)

Last but not least on the list: Witteveen in Drenthe. At Country happiness Pull up a chair at the pop-up bistro for a hearty (and excellent) plate of food in the Drenthe countryside. Afterwards, it's bedtime at Inn de Aelderstroom, a small-scale place on the edge of the greenery. Or sleep even closer to nature at Glamping de BuitenwereldWith forest, heath, and the Drenthe landscape just around the corner, Witteveen is a perfect last stop and an absolute must visit.

Okay, one more encore then. For those who haven't had enough of white yet: Beach Club Witsand on the Zeeland coast is a nice spot for a day at the beach, with a view of the sea and a menu full of fish, meat, and vegetarian dishes. In Amsterdam, you take a seat at The Singing Swan, a waterfront restaurant in North, with a terrace on the IJ (always good) and a menu that changes regularly.

Tony's Chocolonely

Tony's Chocolonely

Six out of ten Tony's Chocolonely bars are the originals. The 180-gram classics that were already on the shelves when the rest had yet to be invented, and whose color code you know by heart without ever having consciously learned it.

Milk (red) is the bar everyone starts with and falls back on. No frills. Pure (dark blue) is the serious one. For whoever says that milk is too sweet and is usually right about it. Milk hazelnut (dark green) is the bar where a piece is always missing when you find it in the drawer. Milk caramel sea salt (orange) is the crowd favorite. Salty and sweet. Pure almond sea salt (light green) is the Next Level version of the previous one. White raspberry popping candy (pink)  is the bar that crackles.

And none of them have a neat grid, but chunks of varying sizes. It represents the skewed distribution in the chocolate industry, and it is exactly why Tony's existed in the first place in 2005.

Let's go! Don't forget to stock up on them before you start the road trip.
