Even more hanging out outside: pop-up restaurant Veldkas in Sint-Geertruid (South Limburg) is fun!
Just be careful that we don't ramble here out of sheer enthusiasm: pop-up outdoor restaurant Veldkas in Sint-Geertruid, South Limburg, deserves a solid report. The temporary restaurant that settled in the Limburg fields post-COVID lockdown is an incredible gem. A bit similar to Amsterdam Lighthouse Island, that still great restaurant in the Markermeer (before Durgerdam).
Vuurtoreneiland also opened as a pop-up (in 2013) and turned out to be a keeper. Here too, you can dine in a greenhouse during the summer months, just like at Veldkas. Let's hope that Veldkas in Sint-Geertruid, under the smoke of Maastricht, also appears to be a keeper...
The basis of restaurant Veldkas is, as with all good ideas, simple: dining with a view, in the meadow (space people!) and only from Wednesday to Sunday if the Dutch summer weather permits. And don't think you're going wrong: the people behind restaurant Veldkas are hard to beat: they open and close the reservation calendar every month so that everyone has a chance of a spot. At the time of writing (mid-August) the calendar for September is still closed, but keep it in mind instagram page from restaurant Veldkas in the Smiezen and you will automatically read when you can go again.
Reservation in the pocket? Nice. Then you are in for an evening with a golden edge. You and your dining companion sit at a simple wooden table on a high spot in a vast landscape. Meadows everywhere, chirping birds and a breeze (hopefully) through the tall grass: hello Mescherhei! The greenhouse and the very spacious terrace were built there, on the edge of the South Limburg hills. You look out over the Meuse Valley with Maastricht, the Savelsbos, the Margraten Plateau, the Voerstreek and the Land of Herve.
The idea is back to basics. Small-scale and with only the landscape as a backdrop. Yes, and that cozy greenhouse of course. Oh, and delicious food and drinks! Does that cost? €57,50 excluding drinks. That really is a pittance for an unforgettable evening.
