Our experience at the Ayurveda hotel Parkschlösschen in Germany

Would we like a cocktail before dinner? The friendly, kind waiter asked. You usually don't have to ask twice. We could already picture the espresso martini flying by. Shortly after, however, a very different kind of glass was brought: warm and filled with ginger and cumin. The tone was set for no ordinary weekend; this weekend would be about slowing down, purity, and balance.

And so it proved. From the moment you arrive, Parkschlösschen exudes tranquility. Nestled in the green hills of the Moselle, the hotel feels more like a refuge than a traditional resort. Everything revolves around that one promise: that of Ayurveda, the ancient Indian science that literally means "the science of life."

A little lesson Ayurveda: This ancient holistic healing method from India focuses on the balance between body, mind, and environment. According to Ayurveda, every person has a unique combination of three life energies, the so-called doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha). Through diet, herbs, massage, yoga, and lifestyle choices, Ayurveda helps balance these energies. The goal: not only to prevent and treat disease but also to promote vitality and inner peace.

And that is precisely what Ayurveda Parkschlösschen is all about. Many of the guests, who return surprisingly often (a good sign), undergo a panchakarma, an ancient treatment that removes toxins, strengthens digestion, and restores the flow of life energy. Such a treatment lasts at least nine days, but you can extend your stay as much as you like. We opted for just a weekend of relaxation: a wonderful way to get acquainted with both Ayurveda and the hotel.

The treatments are intense and pure. One of the most well-known is the four-handed massage, in which two therapists work simultaneously, stimulating both hemispheres of the brain and the nervous system, with positive effects on blood pressure, digestion, and metabolism, among other things. Oil and herbal enemas and steam baths also help cleanse the body and strengthen the immune system. An example is pizzichilli: a treatment in which no less than seven liters of warm oil flows over the body, a powerful boost for the skin, organs and metabolism.

As soon as we drive through the vineyards to Parkschlösschen, it's clear this accommodation has little to do with wine. In the tranquil setting of the Mosel River, in the German region of Rhineland-Palatinate (about a three- to four-hour drive from the Netherlands), several stately historic buildings loom, surrounded by a park-like garden. The interior seamlessly reflects Ayurvedic philosophy: soft earth tones, rounded shapes, and abundant natural light that invite tranquility. No excess, no unnecessary stimuli. The rooms are simply yet warmly decorated, with plenty of wood and natural materials. Everything exudes tranquility and is designed to restore balance to body and mind.

The Parkschlösschen program seamlessly integrates with Ayurvedic philosophy. After our consultation, which is pleasant, thorough, and packed with impressive knowledge, the days begin peacefully with yoga (ten points for wonderful hormone yoga) or meditation. This is followed by light, Ayurvedic meals tailored entirely to your needs. doshas are coordinated. No wine with dinner, but warming herbal infusions. No bread rolls and cheese in the morning, but a steaming bowl of rice soup or oatmeal with chutney. The rest of the day is dedicated to treatments, massages, moments of rest, and consultations with Ayurvedic doctors.

And let's be honest: that can take some getting used to. The lack of coffee, and especially sugar, can cause a slight headache. Fortunately, the wellness facilities and the food make up for it. Because even though the dishes are entirely plant-based and the largest meal of the day is served around noon, the chefs here know exactly how to let the flavors shine. From rich soups to seasonal vegetables and even healthy desserts (which you get at the beginning of the meal, because they're the hardest to digest) – everything is surprisingly delicious. And hydration is key: pots of tea are everywhere in the hotel. Our favorite? The coriander tea.

Our pleasant stay was partly due to the friendly staff, everyone is incredibly nice

Three days later, it feels like we've hit our bodies' reset button. That's precisely what makes a weekend here so special. While other wellness hotels often overwhelm you with choices and luxury, Parkschlösschen consciously opts for simplicity and depth.

So yeah, that pre-dinner cocktail turned out to be no espresso martini, but honestly? After a weekend at Parkschlösschen, that might just taste better than anything else. The trick now is to maintain it once you get home, and thankfully, we've got some great tips.
