São Vicente, Cape Verde: from beautiful sights to swimming with turtles in clear blue water
São Vicente, the cultural heart of Cape Verde, is an island full of surprises. Whether you like adventurous hikes, soaking up culture in the city or swimming in clear blue water - you won't be bored for a second here.
Imagine a raw volcanic landscape, a coastline pounded by waves, and a final destination where you can take a dip in a natural pool. That’s the hike from Calhau to Baía das Gatas. Never (really never) go alone, but with a group. Keep your eyes peeled – it’s a remote route and tourists have been mugged on occasion. Nevertheless, if you dare, this hike is insane.
For the most beautiful sunset on the island, head to the Farol de Dona Amélia lighthouse in São Pedro. From the spot where the rent – or taxi – drops you off in the village, you can walk to the lighthouse in about twenty minutes along the beach. The route is simple: you just follow the coastline. Once you arrive, you will be rewarded with a beautiful view of the rough ocean and the cliffs. Tip: go early in the morning or around sunset, because it gets really hot here in the middle of the day.
Yes, you can swim with turtles here. No, don’t do that with fishermen who feed them. As soon as you arrive in São Pedro, you will probably be approached by fishermen who offer to go out with their boat and swim with turtles for around 25 euros. It may sound nice, but it disrupts their natural behavior. Feeding them makes them used to people and dependent on us – and that is of course not the intention.
Rather choose a snorkeling tour where you spot them in the wild, in a responsible way. Or bring your own diving goggles and snorkel, swim into the bay, and who knows, one might just pass by. Without disturbing them, just as it should be.
Sniffing culture in Mindelo is what you do here. If you travel to another country, you naturally also want to experience something of the culture. In Mindelo, this is perfectly possible at the Centro Nacional de Artesanato e Design (CNAD). From impressive paintings and sculptures to modern installations and handmade jewelry – everything breathes Cape Verdean culture.
There are regular temporary exhibitions, for example on the impact of plastic use in the country. Even waste is transformed into art here.
Entry costs 500 escudos (just over €4,50), and if you're looking for a unique souvenir? This is it the place to be.
Keep an eye on: Tourists are immediately noticeable on this island and can be easy prey for pickpockets and muggers. Therefore, do not go alone, do not take too many valuables with you and put away what you do take with you. Despite everything, do not be put off by the risks, because if an island is worth it, it is São Vicente.
