On to the Far North. Something that – in my case – had been on the wish list for years but never really got around to it. And then we went to stay Leeuwarden. So Friesland. You really can't get much higher in the Netherlands. If you are looking for a combination of adventure, nature and friendliness, then this is the outing you should book. We previously wrote a piece about what's going on can be experienced in the sunny North. And see part 2 of this the triptych Leeuwarden and Friesland: eating, sleeping and shopping.

DINING
I mean, first things first. A city trip without good food is actually a bit of a failure. Fortunately, Leeuwarden has plenty of tasty treats. The Burgundian city has - even during the colder moments during my Frisian visit - plenty of beckoning terraces, cafes and restaurants. It's a good idea to wander around and discover something for yourself. You just might be able to handle this one to browse.

When
Wannee's interior reveals exactly what they stand for. The light store with lots of wood and plants exudes nature, health and quality. Mix Dutch culture – read: dishes – and no-waste mentality and you have a gem of a restaurant. After breakfast, lunch or dinner you can step back into Frisian life here with a healthy feeling.

Roast
You will find it right in the center Roast. Once again a busy business with an industrial look. The main component of Roast is – you may have guessed it – the grill. And there is usually chicken underneath. But tuna, dates and goat cheese are also grilled. The menu changes weekly and beer lovers can tap their own beer while having lunch or dinner at one of the tap tables.

Probationary leave
You will find the recently opened prison in the beautiful old prison De Blokhuispoort Probationary leave. The paint is still fresh, the colors on the walls are contemporary, there is fresh green hanging from the ceiling and the copper kitchen is still shiny. For warm days there is a lovely, large terrace on the waterfront. That is of course not a punishment. Trial leave stands for simplicity and local food. And that for both lunch and dinner. The menu has the right, richly filled dishes. And plenty of vegetarian options, we also give points for that.

The Mayor of Naples
Sometimes healthy isn't enough. Then you need firm. A pasta, a pizza. And then there is The Mayor of Naples to satisfy that craving. We don't need to spend too many words on the matter. In a cozy industrial setting, the pizzas come from the brick oven and the pasta is fresh and well filled. Are you with kids? They have a nice play area at the back of the store with TV and toys. So mom and dad can toast together.

STAY OVERNIGHT
After all that wandering around, toasting and eating, you need to get some sleep. If you think you have to make do with a dated hotel, you're wrong! Leeuwarden and the surrounding area has surprising places to sleep.

Hotel Post Plaza
Perhaps the most hoteliest in this list but a very nice place to stay. Hotel Post Plaza is located right in the center and is a good start to your city trip. The monumental former post office was renovated into a grand café and hotel. The authentic details from the late 1800s have been restored and the tribute to the postman is clearly visible. If you already have other sleeping plans, then one coffee break definitely worth a visit in the grand café.

Alibi Hostel
Have you always wanted to spend a night in a cell? Tada! It is possible in Leeuwarden. And you don't have to break any laws to do it. In the former toughest prison in the Netherlands - which now serves as a cultural hotspot - there is, among other things Alibi Hostel established. From €20 for a place to sleep in a dormitory to €60 for a luxury double room, you can - with the desired comfort - kill your prison dream.

The Owl
There is a real tree house just a stone's throw from the prison. Right in the center that is. With two people you can pretend into the wild and then simply enter city life in 5 steps. De Owl is part of Alibi Hostel, so you have to walk there for breakfast.

WeidumerHout
Would you rather really? into the wild want to stay overnight during your Frisian visit? Are you coming to Friesland by car instead of the train? And do you think driving out of town before going to bed is no problem? Hotel WeidumerHout is located in an 18th century farmhouse in the middle of green meadows. There are 10 sleek wooden cubes in the green that you can sleep in. Nice, right?

SHOPPING
During a weekend away you can also enjoy snacking and shopping. There are plenty of boutiques hidden in the small streets of Leeuwarden. If you want to taste local delicacies – the Frisian delicacy orange cake, for example – then take a walk along the Grutterswinkel. In this shop slash mini museum you will find local specialties and old Dutch sweets. Do you prefer the stronger stuff? It's around the corner Beerenburger museum. Mini again. In addition to discovering the history of the Boomsma Beerenburger, you can also - for €3,50! - get a tasting with the various Boomsma drinks. And buy a bottle of drink for the hotel room. Cheers!
