Wonderful hotels and holiday homes in your own country (with the best beds)
You buy a new real bed for life, or at least for a large part of that (adult) life. We do. Here you read how we approached that process, although we skipped an essential part: a test lie is of course one thing, but it is much better to take a test sleep! Correct. A whole night. Two even. Do you care? Mixing the pleasant with the, er, pleasant, so to speak.
And those comfortable beds can be found in the nicest and most beautiful hotels and holiday homes in the country. In fact, you will find some of our all-time favorite Dutch hotels in the list below! And then you sleep on, yes, a top bed. Win-win. Save them all.
If you still want to tickle yourself... Then head to beautiful Zwolle where everything at Librije's Hotel has been taken care of down to the last detail (understatement). The food, the wines and the beds. We can of course be quite brief about the restaurant: it is not without reason that it has been one of the very best (and surprisingly friendly) in the Netherlands for years. The fact that the hotel may even be there may be new to you. It's the hotel is the smallest five-star hotel in our country and owners Jonnie and Thérèse Boer continue what makes their restaurant such a success: only the best is good enough. Which also applies to the beds. Well, they are from Auping. If you book one of the 19 rooms, you can also expect a butler service, a new Mercedes S-class as your own taxi at your doorstep, various boats for use by guests and of course high-level hospitality.
Bilderberg's hotels all have beds that you never want to get out of (also check the reviews: good beds are - and rightly so - very common). The only reason to get out of bed is breakfast. With a capital letter, because it is certainly extensive. Not a problem, because if you want, you can just crawl back into bed to relax. Starting with castles where you literally sleep like a prince(s). Château Holtmühle is located in Tegelen in North Limburg, near the Castle Gardens of Arcen and Designer Outlet Roermond. A little further south, on an estate of no less than 18 hectares between the hills of Vaals kasteel vaalsbroek. Of course it's wonderful to sleep in a castle, but you don't necessarily have to be in a castle for a good night's sleep. Once you close your eyes you can't see anything anymore. As long as the bed is comfortable, and that is what the Bilderberg hotels do. In the castles, but also near Hotel Wientjes in Zwolle and Hotel De Keizerskroon in Apeldoorn (with Het Loo Palace literally next door!).
oh Boutique Hotel 't Keershuys, so that is quite a concept in Den Bosch. Right in the bustling heart of the Brabant capital you will find the stylish hotel where a number of the tastefully decorated rooms rightly 'royal suites' although the 'simple' luxury rooms are all equally beautiful and not at all simple. To go? Good idea. Then also make sure you have a table in the bistro belonging to the hotel: Bistro 't Keershuys. Then after dinner you can roll upstairs and certainly be very satisfied. And upstairs, it's a good place to stay, thanks to the large, comfortable beds. The building that houses boutique hotel 't Keershuys is a national monument, but inside the hotel is fully equipped. This provides that delicious combination of authentic elements and the modern luxury that you want the next time you treat yourself to an outing. Read more
The dunes of Castricum are the place to be: here, near one of our all-time favorite beach bars Club Zand, Strandhotel Zoomers opened, a picture of a small-scale hotel that was decorated from A to Z by our all-time favorite interior label HK Living. Those tasteful guests obviously chose the most tasteful beds for their hotel – duh.
Besides the fact that the hotel is simply beautiful, you also sleep very comfortably thanks to the apartment-style experience: there are two real and enormous apartments with multiple bedrooms, but the rooms for 2 are also fully equipped. There is no hotel restaurant. That's completely okay because you can walk to the aforementioned beach bar or one of the other nice places on the beach within a few minutes. Bringing children? Go to Deining or beach hotel Zoomers! You will find your breakfast in front of your hotel the next morning: eat it quickly so that the eggs are still perfectly warm!
Really need some rest? To the beach of course! And if there's a place that's perfect for just that, this is it The Beach Hotel in Cadzand in Zeeland well.
“Let's book a weekend by the sea!”. Good plan. There's a good chance that you're thinking of Scheveningen, Zandvoort, one of the Wadden Islands or possibly Domburg in the Netherlands, right? Shame! Because one of the nicest hotels is right (but literally) on the beach Beach hotel Cadzand-Bad. Cadzand-Bad? More oui! An unsurpassed coastal town in our own country with the wonderful mundane atmosphere that comes with Knokke, a little further away, combined with the down-to-earth atmosphere of the Netherlands. The best of both worlds and the wildly attractive Strandhotel forms the unmissable epi-center.
You book a room there for a few reasons: 1) that beach, 2) that environment, 3) the great in-house restaurants (no less than 3 of them), 4) the fact that you can enjoy your delicious Auping after that wonderful evening of dining. nest rolls into!
Provided that we especially love Ludiek's (summer) country retreat in the high (between Meppel and Dwingeloo) Havelte (check that tent!), it is all very good and fun. It's a party, especially when the spotlights come on under the big tent. Then you know that it is (almost) dinner time (that's easy with Ludiek) and that afterwards - provided you have made a reservation of course - you can roll upstairs into one of the Auping beds. Ludiek is beautifully situated in greenery and even if the tent is taken down during the winter months, it is a great place to have a good rest. Fun
Anyone who has studied Dutch fashion even a little bit will know that the only major fashion school is in Arnhem (ArtEZ Academy of Visual Arts) and the name Piet Paris (Pieter 't Hoen) should also ring bells. . This fashion illustrator of stature – not in terms of stature, by the way – thought in 2012 that Arnhem was ripe for a fashion hotel. He went into the studio and came up with the idea of opening a hotel in the Klarendal district, the heart of the Fashion Quarter, whose twenty rooms could be decorated by fashion designers, most of them ex-students of the academy. A very good idea that also turned out very well. Each room is naturally unique, although you can choose from four different room types: the Small room, the Comfort room, the Loft room and the Deluxe room with mezzanine. You can sleep in a real Bas Kosters, a real Sjaak Hullekes or in an original Spijkers & Spijkers, complete with drawings on the walls, inspiring furniture and curtains made of clothing fabrics. It is artistic, although no skimping on comfort - even the creative (fashion) person likes to flop down on an Auping bed, wake up under a powerful rain shower and start the day in bed with the newspaper and a cup of Nespresso.
We have a big, very big soft spot for restaurants (with bedrooms) such as The Black Farmer in the small Leuvenum (which belongs to Ermelo and is located on the Veluwe). Old school good. No fuss, small-scale, in the green and what they do, they do well. One that you would almost, almost forget and that's a shame. You can go there for a satay or a piece of apple pie or you can opt for an extensive dinner and then curl up in your Auping nest - we all approve. Summer? Nice (autumn) weather? It is one of the best places for a long day on the terrace in the greenery, also under the canopy, just saying.
In Eindhoven they are good at filling vacant industrial properties. Just look at Strijp S and Strijp R. The same thing also happened in the Bergen district, where an old fire station on Paradijslaan was given a new purpose: Barracks. There were two restaurants, it fine dining restaurant Benz and the more accessible bar/restaurant Kazerne. And a hotel that, nice and clearly, was also named Kazerne. There are only eight rooms, but one of them has no less than 140 square meters (!) and each room and suite has been decorated with work by young and upcoming design talent. There is an exhibition space of 2500 square meters and it is, by far, the most artistic residence in Eindhoven. Perfect place for those who want to be chic and/or want to bring their dog, because that is also possible here.
Make no secret: we are op the Westergas, the industrial area on the west side of Amsterdam. The park is nice, the catering industry is good, there is space and the historic buildings are no less than impressive. It opened in 2017 in one of the largest, if not the largest, of those buildings Conscious Hotel Westerpark. At the head of the park where the workshop and offices of the gas factory (still on the outside of the building, take a look) once housed. The hotel is made of red brick and has windows overlooking the Westerpark on one side and the grounds on the other.
Things are no less nice inside: the hotel rooms are wonderfully light and spacious, have that beautiful clean 'Scandinavian' wood everywhere with, of course, an Auping Essential bed in the center, a classic.
Conscious Hotel Westerpark is the fourth hotel of the Conscious Hotels group, which is one of the most sustainable hotel groups in the country. Hence the title of course. Which in turn is a perfect match with the equally sustainable Auping. Circle around. You understand.
Did you know that Auping comes from Deventer? This is where Johannes Auping's cradle stood and this is also where he built his first bed. It is therefore not surprising that there is a hotel in the heart of the city that seems to be an ode to the sleeping history of Deventer. We like! Hotel in the house of Deventer is housed in a monumental mansion on a square overlooking the Grote Kerk. The 7 rooms are so-called city lofts and they certainly radiate that: art can be found and seen there and the furniture is simple but spot-on – you don't need more than a perfect base.
You sleep on the famous Auping Auronde, an oldie in a new guise that you can sink into. After sleeping you can next door enjoy an organic breakfast with regional products. Extra good start to the day!
We really didn't know that Deventer is so nice! Super cozy with many delicious restaurants. Who what where? Voila: This is how you do Deventer
On Rotterdam's usually windy Kop van Zuid, a historic customs building from 1879 was converted into an attractive, chic design hotel. Small hotel, because it is not big, but it is cozy. And stoneware, on many fronts. The reception is located in the middle of the building, in a bright, high entrance. On the left the breakfast room, on the right the sitting room with piano and clocks that do not tick and whose hands are in 'smiley position': time is not important inside Pincoffs. Let it go. Get into bed on time, or late. Up to you. If possible, head for the fantastic romantic suite - although all rooms are beautiful. But still, that romantic suite is honeymoon galore. Floral wallpaper 2.0, actually more painting than wallpaper, a gigantic and wonderful bed, a freestanding bath, warm, attractive greenery on the wall and shutters on the windows.
The door next to the door conceals what used to serve as the mistress's entrance, a narrow hallway with a ditto staircase that ends in the lobby, now of course also decorated with a beautiful floral wallpaper.
The next morning, the breakfast buffet table is full of seeds, fruits and superfoods for your organic yogurt, meats from De Groene Weg butcher and bread from Carl Siegert. When the weather is nice, you can have breakfast on the terrace on the Maas, overlooking the island full of old mansions. In Dutch weather, you can have breakfast in the living room or lounge.
Also special, and particularly fun, is an overnight stay in the chic Raadhuys in Kessel, Limburg, right on the Maas in North Limburg. The old Town Hall houses four guest rooms that are run bed and breakfast style: the Mayor's Room which overlooks the terraced garden and the Maas, the Bode Room which is our favorite thanks to its rugged details, the serene Secretarial Room and the modern Archives Room. What's extra nice, we think, is that the daughter of the couple who run the B&B is an architect and, of course, signed for the result. That is beautiful. Of course.
What turns out? In almost no city in the Netherlands can you relax as comfortably as in Maastricht! We sum up:
- Fresh, fruity and errug kid-proof also: Kaboom Hotel
- The Dutch classic of classics and always a good idea: the Kruisherenhotel
- Speaking of an always good (personal) favorite: Hotel Zenden. You go!
- A go-to address since 2013: the Townhouse Hotel but perhaps the apartments are still the best option.
- The Derlon hotel is also a new classic, also for sumptuous dining.
Sleeping in a cardboard Penthouse. You read that correctly. A cardboard Penthouse or actually the cardboard Penthouse of the Low Countries called the Wikkelhouse, in the middle of the vast nothingness on the edge of the ever beautiful Biesbosch, part of Stayokay Dordrecht. Stayokay yes, the hostel chain. You may not have known, but Stayokay has a number of very special places to stay, including rooms for two, such as in Maastricht, a stone's throw from Het Vrijthof, on Terschelling and this one, almost in the Biesbosch. What you also didn't know is that the chain has royal beds in all its hotel rooms, including Wikkelhouse in particular. So you can sleep like a royal for just a few cents. The clean lines of the house, the glass facade and a super sleek design - everything is more than great slick. Especially that glass front, that's what makes it. With a bit of luck and a bit of sunshine, the house is bathed in (sun)light. Pure enjoyment. read more
Can we make one more stand for the holiday parks in our own country? Because they also move with the times! No, no, those parks are no longer the unsightly bungalow parks where it might have been 'fun for the children' but where parents would prefer to turn around as soon as possible. You should visit Hof van Saksen, one of the most beautiful parks in the country. There, but also at all other Landal GreenParks locations, you sleep in the middle of nature on an Auping bed. Yes. Whether you have a four, six or eight person house, everyone will sleep like a king. Sleeping in a green environment gives you energy, is good for your health and makes you happier. They say. We believe. And Auping and Landal GreenParks believe that a good night's sleep is the basis for optimally enjoying your holiday. Pure profit if you ask us.
