The best/most beautiful/nicest hotels in Maastricht? We would book these (again) in a heartbeat.
A weekend away obviously starts with reserving good accommodation. There are plenty of options, which is why we offer a helping hand on the following pages. In our opinion, these are the best/most beautiful/nicest hotels in Maastricht. And as an encore, three pearls just outside the city. Don't mention it.
There are those hotels that grab us even before we've been there. Voila: Van Oys. Or no: we should say Van Oys Maastricht Retreat, a Leading Hotel of the World. A picture-perfect spot on the outskirts of the ever-charming and lively Maastricht. With, naturally, an insanely good restaurant, or so we’ve been told. It costs a pretty penny, but you get what you pay for. Is it worth it? We’re actually guessing so, but we hope to be able to tell you firsthand soon.
Maison Haas Hustinx is located on the Vrijthof. The name Haas refers to the leap into the unknown the founder took when he decided to start a hotel in Maastricht. That leap paid off well, as more than 100 years later, Maison Haas Hustinx is still highly praised. The hotel has only 17 rooms, spread across two monumental buildings from 1920. Every room is unique, bright, and spacious. The smallest rooms already occupy 25m², the suites around 40m², and the superior apartment a whopping 120m². In contrast to the rooms, the hotel's Sanctum Spa is on the small side, although it too has everything you need. With a sauna, hammam, swimming pool, and an alcove where you can meditate or really chill out, many people will be satisfied. Once completely zen, you can take a seat at Restaurant Safar, derived from the Arabic word for travel, for a delicious Middle Eastern meal.
Chefs Zeina Haroun and Roï Eyny spoil their guests with a Levantine experience full of spicy dishes. In this way they honor the mixed heritage that has long shaped the eastern Mediterranean.
At hotel Cousins they attach great importance to luxury, locality and sustainability. That starts with breakfast. If you spend the night here, a Limburg breakfast will be ready in the morning. Early in the morning, the staff visits local suppliers and farmers to ensure that the farm-fresh eggs are ready on time. All rooms are named after a member of the Scottish Campbell family, who ran a hat factory here before they sold the property to the grandfather of the current hotel owners. Many guests want to spend the night at Arthur, Jake, Rose or Grace. The hotel's seven rooms are spacious, have a super king-size bed and are all decorated differently, tailored to the character of the family member they are named after.
For example, in Rose's room there is a bathtub next to a wall full of pink tiles, in Julia's room gold-framed mirrors hang on the wine-red walls and in Arthur's room there is a green carpet on the floor. Conclusion: the Campbell family's sense of style did not only apply to hats.
You will find Hotel Alex Maastricht less than 100 meters from the station. And you will certainly want to stay at Alex. A large Portuguese terrace, rooms for those who are just out and about, and rooms for those who want to unwind and start the day in a bathtub. Or with a coffee on the balcony, overlooking the Maastricht promenade. The people at Hotel Alex know how to pamper you, and isn't that exactly what a (mid)week getaway is all about? Fresh, light, and open—those are the rooms at Hotel AlexWith sleek colors, just the right velvet cushion, and the right details: a vase of flowers here, a modern and certainly comfortable chair there, beautiful wooden floors (the herringbone in the Superior is a favorite), and so on; every room has a touch of a trendy color. The restaurant takes a different approach. Dark walls, soft, light, and with vintage suitcases as showpieces above the bar. The stained-glass windows in the restaurant are nice and large, and on the terrace you sit like a king, especially when the sun is shining. Fresh, white tables and under the canopy of the tall trees in the street. A vacation moment par excellence.
Where Hotel Alex is considered 'fresh blood' in the center of Maastricht, it may Kruisheren Hotel to be called the classic of classics. If you talk to people about Maastricht and the Kruisherenhotel, the vast majority of folks actually know what you're talking about. You know, that hotel used to be a Gothic monastery and is now a handsome place where you definitely have to stay at least once in your life. Simply because it is such a – there you have it – classic in the heart of the Maas. And that is just talking about the formal and casual looksBecause that southern hospitality here is top-notch. Another nice thing about the south: it always feels a bit like being abroad. That Burgundian lifestyle, oh how we love it.
The Kruisheren Hotel is also related to both Chateau Neercanne, the only terraced castle in the Netherlands, and Château St. Gerlach – speaking of Limburg classics… Both chateaus These should undoubtedly be on your to-do list for a romantic weekend getaway.
Hotel Monastère is located on Boschstraat. That may not be a street that you have often heard of as a non-Maastricht resident, but since the development of the Sphinxkwartier it has become one of the best streets to be in, as it forms the link between that quarter and the historic city center that we all love so much. know well. Prime location, that's one thing. Which also applies to the building itself: the word says it all: 'monastere', or monastery in French. That monastery is part of the five-building building, although the original monastery hall is not part of the hotel. Nevertheless, the grandeur is still evident. You enter a Farrow and Ball-esque light blue hall, where you will find the square walk-around check-in desk in the middle, a trick that seems to be unique to the Vondel Hotels group. And rightly so: a standing reception that you can get around on all sides is very inviting. No lengthy check-in procedure, but a welcome drink on the couch, if you want. Or else quickly go to your room, where a large folding bed is waiting and where the walls are also painted in those powdery old French tones. Where the headboards have cool prints, just like the room dividers, there is striking art everywhere and the Marshall speaker is ready to go.
Ever heard of the Dutch Cadier en Keer? No? Cadier and Keer – that name alone is delicious, isn't it? – is a forgotten village a stone's throw from Maastricht and the place where Landgoed Heerdeberg is located. And that estate is a beautiful place! There is an outdoor kitchen, its own butcher's shop, a terrace between the herb gardens and a holiday home! And… And… And… Oh well, in the end it comes down to the fact that the Heerdeberg Estate is always a good idea. To taste the goodies from the (outdoor) kitchen and take it home or to sit down. We cook and live according to the rhythm of the seasons. Vegetables and herbs picked from the own garden, a lot of foraging and walking animals between all the festivities and before you know it you will be under the tiles for an entire afternoon. In the same petit village there are two lovely little houses (one of which is called Theodorus).
Pater Kustersweg 20, 6267 NL Cadier en Keer
Here the beds are spread out for you and the freshly picked finds from the fruit trees in the backyard are ready for you. With the warm welcome of free-range Mergelland fowl, the Theodorus holiday home can be called a rather idyllic place, the likes of which are few.
Buitenplaats Vaeshartelt, a hotel in an 18th-century country estate, is located in a large landscape park north of Maastricht. The country estate has been around for many years and you immediately notice that when you drive up. Long tree-lined avenues, water features, vistas and grazing sheep (the only one on this list that will not last that long) contribute to the lively and magical atmosphere. The hotel has 83 comfortable rooms, furnished simply and without fuss. You don't have to worry that the location is impractical: you can be back in Maastricht within five minutes by car. Vaeshartelt is surrounded by nature, where you can enjoy walking and cycling, and you can stock up on snacks for the road in advance from one of the take away vans at The Hangout. There is also a bar and two restaurants.
At the bistro you eat as you would expect from a bistro. Classic and French plats in an informal setting. At The Greenhouse there are only local and vegetarian dishes on the menu. Since lack of space is not an issue here, a terrace could not be missing. Let the sun shine and you'll be happy here.
An incredibly beautiful castle rises on the banks of the Maas. Fairytale, even. There is an abundance of stained glass, exposed stone walls, heavy stairs, countless balconies: picture perfect is an understatement to say the least. You can't easily stop talking about De Hoogenweerth Castle. Especially when you've spent the night there. You can spend the night in the castle itself or in the Coach House. As a guest you also have access to the Lusthof, a romantic hotel garden with a heated plunge pool, sun beds and seating areas. As a Bridgerton fan (even as a non-Bridgerton fan) you have no choice but to accept this. All that should be more than enough to feel like a king or queen and sleep like a prince. If you want more of that experience, you can take it a step further by gathering all your friends and renting the entire castle. With a bit of luck they will also serve you.
