IBIZA 2018, NEW KIDS IN TOWN: Aquitania, Santa Eularia
It was an exciting sensation for months: a large black building slowly rose on the horizon along the road from Ibiza town to Santa Eularia... Islanders talked about it all winter: what on earth was going to happen here? (large black buildings are not that common in Ibiza)
The time has finally come and the mystery has been solved: the building - which is completely black inside and out - houses a new flashy interior design store: Aquitaine. The company is very Spanish (there is no English even on their website) and the club already had a branch in Menorca. The selection of brands and products is (fortunately) less typically Spanish.
Here - by Spanish, and certainly also Ibicienco standards - plenty of contemporary and sustainable products and designs are sold. Modern design with minimalist lines. Aquitania itself says it stands for quality, design and high-quality products in mostly natural materials: you will find textiles made of hemp and jute, authentic wooden furniture made of teak, oak and pine and bedding made of silk, linen and cashmere. In addition to their own production line and the many different Northern European brands such as Norman Copenhagen, BD Barcelona, Kartell and Arper, they also combine their collection with various antique items. And you can go there for interior and lighting advice. Always nice.
Islanders talked about it all winter long: what on earth was going to happen here?
It seems that a fresh wind of interior design is slowly starting to blow across Ibiza... For years it was very clear what was going on here in terms of interior design: if you didn't want a traditional Spanish interior, then your business was white, posh and hysterical, or totally submerged in a hippie sauce. Now we see (albeit very steadily, but well) more and more shops/restaurants/hotels and guesthouses that dare to combine the traditional local architectural style with a sleek contemporary Scandinavian/Northern European interior, and oh boy do we love it! One of the champions in this area is the aforementioned Jurjen van Hulzen, whose new shop Ibiza Interiors will be officially opened next weekend. And of course we are there. A report on this will follow next week!
