The best of Käringön on the Swedish west coast

Visiting Sweden's west coast? Then a visit to one of the sparsely populated islands in this vast archipelago is a must. One of the more famous and beautiful islands accessible by ferry is Käringön. With only 83 permanent residents, it's one of the most sparsely populated areas in Sweden. The island is car-free, and everything is within walking distance. In the summer, people come to visit their holiday homes, and tourism increases somewhat.

Despite the island's small size, they have a strong restaurant scene. The crêperie, for example, is a popular spot in the summer. Behind the hotel, a steep staircase leads to a deck where you can relax on the crêperie's terrace.

From sweet to savory: there's everything on the menu. Coffee is available, and you can also satisfy your alcoholic thirst.

Simsons Vincafé

Simsons is a must-see. It's a laid-back wine bar right on the harbor. Stop by for fresh coffee and a cinnamon roll in the morning, or a good glass of natural wine with a sourdough pizza later in the day. Everything is laid-back, Scandinavian-style; no reservations are needed; you're always welcome. Situated right on the harbor where the ferry docks, this place is hard to miss. Bask in the sunshine, watch the boats, and enjoy a drink. Need we say more?

Käringons Fiskaffär

Fresh fish straight from the boat to your plate? In a charming alleyway in the harbor, Folke and Kristina Sjöberg offer freshly cooked lobster, crab, and fish every day. Their langoustines are praised as the tastiest on the West Coast. The shop is open daily in the summer, and it's worth checking out during the off-season.

Swimming on the south side

An absolute must is to follow the arrows over the cliffs (the uninhabited part of the island) to swim in a unique spot. Next to the cliffs are beautiful swimming bays, often with steps for optimal entry. In some places, there's also a diving board or changing room.

Familjebadet (trampolinbadet) is recommended.

Fancy a round of mini golf with a sea view? Do it! But don't miss Skafferiet. This coffee shop is right next to the course, so you'll have a great view. Think: homemade cinnamon buns, strong Swedish coffee, and a sun-drenched terrace surrounded by greenery. The atmosphere? Cozy, local, and the kind of place you'll pop in for a quick fika... and end up staying.
