The nicest terraces in Amsterdam (where you can also go with children)

The nicest terraces in Amsterdam (where you can also go with children)

Skirt day, terrace weather, the catering industry open again... summer is coming And we’re celebrating in our own country. In fact: in our own city! Because now that the terraces are opening up again, we want to too. Out into the open, into our home base of Amsterdam (or just a little bit out of the city), and soaking up the good times. But where? What are truly the very best terraces to drop by with your kids for a good old-fashioned, cozy day out on the terrace?

Terrasmus, Erasmus Park, Amsterdam West

Terrasmus, Erasmus Park, Amsterdam West

Number 1 for a drink with the kids: terraces in the park. And if there is also a playground nearby, such an address gets 10 points. We call Noorderparkcafé  in Amsterdam North, just like The VerbroederIJ (also in North), we call the terrace from Hotel Arena (although the service is not that good... Nice, not that attentive) and we are fans 'New Deep in the Flevopark. But this is about Terrasmus, the very nice park pavilion in the Erasmus Park where it is always a good time, the staff is always pleasant and the cake is delicious. Moreover, you look out on the playground – handsome boy who can't last a (Wednesday) afternoon there.

Amsterdam North

Amsterdam North

Amsterdam North It is, in any case, the perfect base for a bit more space. Because a bit more space means a bit more room for a few more tables and chairs outside, and that means we will definitely find a spot there with the whole family – Noorderpark Café deserves a ten on all fronts: because the whole place is located in the Noorderpark, the little ones can run around freely. If you are blessed with a child who actually wants to stay seated at the table to eat, there are high chairs available. The cuisine is nice and simple. Phew, it feels like a holiday here.

At plek, you know, those containers turned turned city beach, you will always find a great spot and the sandwiches with vegetables and hummus are the tastiest. Pllek is located on the water, so you have to be careful, but the safety of the little ones has been taken into account.

Noord

Behind Pllek opened Zeal, a great large beer café with a great large and sunny terrace. There is no danger here for children thundering into the water: then they have to run very far. You can also easily walk to it Noorderlichtcafe, always remains a good idea.

And of course Hangar, the hip city beach-slash-café with a beach bar atmosphere and where the kiddos can run behind the bulkheads of the beach and play with the sand: with a bit of luck you may even get one of the hammocks! Be careful: if you are not behind the fence, they can fall into the water. This also applies to all catering establishments in this list FC Hyena (pizza!) and a nice one, but there is no security in relation to the water, so better be careful.

Definitely too the VerbroederIJ don't skip it. A café, city beach and vegetable garden community, all in one. The complete package for moms, dads and offspring.

Café Restaurant Papillon – how we love it. On the left, Papillon has a nice little coffee shop where you can get fresh bread as well as coffee to go. On the right side of the building is a lovely restaurant where you can brunch. In front of that, stretching across the entire building, is a huge terrace. We love it.

Zeeburgereiland and Steigereiland

Zeeburgereiland and Steigereiland

It would be strange if there were no child-friendly catering establishments in IJburg, since the Amsterdam peninsula seems to be made for children. You will find the cozy atmosphere at the harbour DOK48 where you can enjoy lunch/drinks/dinner on the large terrace on the water. Or you can sit down here for a drink. And the kids can choose from a separate menu with many tasty dishes.

A little further on, actually not quite IJburg but Zeeburgereiland, is Haddock a lesser known place, but certainly no less pleasant.

Did we have Pina Already mentioned? A gem of a place with high windows, lots of light, and delicious specialty coffee, with plenty of space to sit outside!

Overamstel/South-East

Overamstel/South-East

Admit it, you probably don't go there enough, but Amsterdam South-East is a very nice cycling route from the center of Amsterdam. If you jump on that bike, head for the Italians L'Osteria: behind the small harbor here (the Port of Amsterdam) is an inconspicuous, but remarkably good restaurant with an enclosed terrace where you can eat delicious Italian dishes, mini pizzas and pasta for the kids. And they don't like all that, do they? When the sun shines, it shines here.

If you didn't know any better, you wouldn't expect that tHuis on the Amstel really is Amsterdam. A wonderful address where you can relax from your bike ride in the garden of the house. Child seat? Are you crazy! Nice on the grass with those buttocks.

Amsterdam Oost

Amsterdam Oost

With your ass in Artis, what more could you want? From the terrace of the The Plantation If you look very closely, you can see the flamingos and hear the elephants trumpeting. The little ones also play through the fountains to cool off.

Speaking of 'up your ass': that of Hotel Arena Located in Oosterpark, with a water park and a playground within mom and dad's view. A high chair is already waiting when you arrive, and warm-up routines are never a problem either.

The Cottage – it goes without saying, a favorite of young and old. The huge terrace is in full swing from early on. Hearty breakfasts are served from the kitchen, but you can also settle down for a scone and coffee. This place is super kid-friendly.

Dignita Hoftuin is actually Amsterdam Center, but since the hidden gem is adjacent to Amsterdam East, we will include it here. Around Dignita you will find a large city garden - a gift - and inside there are toys, there are babyccinos and every toddler, preschooler and toddler is welcomed with a smile and sometimes even a coloring page. It's nice, because the Hortus Botanicus will also open again soon and that's across the street. Win-win.

RustRoest on Oostenburg was temporarily closed due to extensive renovations, but they are back now! Roest is located in a historic building that has been transformed into a beautiful restaurant. There is plenty of space to play on the large terrace, allowing the kids to happily burn off all their energy while the parents enjoy the sun on the terrace with a well-deserved drink.

Amsterdam Center

Amsterdam Center

Hidden and yet oh so close: it Mandela House right behind Central Station - if you don't know it, you will never get there, even though during the summer months it is one of the most beautiful terraces in Amsterdam, of the messy kind. There are lounge corners, individual chairs such as in the Jardin de Tuileries in Paris and even a grassy hill to lie on. Open from 10 am to 10 pm, if the weather is reasonable or good, until September. Accessible by both ferries and an eight-minute walk or three-minute bike ride: they are exactly between the two ferries. And you can get a meal of the day for just Euro 8,50.

You can't beat the Westergasterrein, especially when the sun comes out. The entire resort is car-free and bicycles and scooters are available all over the place. On Sundays there is always a mini event, from a stray whirligig to a collection of market stalls, and when it is really hot, the little ones can cool off in the paddling pool. Every terrace here is nice, although we particularly like this one improved Pacific Park Highly recommended: the business has the end of the site and therefore has extra space for plenty of tables and extra one and a half meters. Send them in every now and then: there is a huge blanket chest full of toys and coloring materials.

Also the terrace of the ConsciousHotel Let's be honest: here you are closest to the aforementioned outdoor pool. And of course Mussel & Gin where the kibbeling pan is going full speed this summer: they just think it's super tasty.

Finally, cycle a little further to the Neighborhood Farm around which there is a terrace everywhere.

Amsterdam South

Amsterdam South

In Vondeltuin, in the beautiful Vondelpark, the kids can play in the garden, while the parents enjoy the summer atmosphere with a glass of wine on the large terrace. There is also a special children's menu for the kids.

Goos is the place to be for young and old. Goos is located on a large (car-free) park, so the kids can play safely. The kids can also play with toys here, color in coloring pages and of course there are plenty of treats to eat.
