Oh Bows, a must (!) for your list. At Archi, you take a seat on the futon cushions while a delicious breakfast is prepared for you. Go for a crêpe or something savory; everything is tasty and comes from the small kitchen, which you are certainly welcome to take a peek into. In terms of decor, it definitely gets a 10: classic Japanese but with a wonderfully cozy twist. We are fans.

Perhaps the most unique way to have breakfast is at Vermillion Cafe at the Mount Inari temple and various Shinto altars. Vermillion Cafe is a hidden gems with a terrace surrounded by greenery. Waiting for a table is a bit of a challenge, but have a little patience because you don't often come across such a unique spot.

Have you really been to Japan without eating the best Gyoza in Kyoto? Don't think so. At Chao Chao gyoza Pull up a chair (yes, really, no reservation needed) for the tastiest in town. Play it safe with chicken or shrimp gyoza, but here too you can certainly try more unusual combinations. Also, be sure to order plenty of the side dishes (the white cabbage!).

Ace hotel is great if you're in the mood for Western dishes. For instance, the Italian restaurant Mr Maurice is located in the hotel, but you can also step inside here for tacos at Ace (hello). seats at the bar and a live DJ set on weekends). In addition, all Ace hotels are known for their fine coffee bar: Stumptown Coffee.

Hikiniku to Come It is touristy, but definitely worth the effort. At Hikiniku, you book well in advance, because this little spot is incredibly popular. On the menu are three burgers, all prepared and meant to be eaten in a different way. The open fire is a sensation, and so is the table setting: a small bowl for everything.

Howene is another such nice spot in Kyoto. A wine bar meets listening bar meets Dessert bar. The perfect combination, if you ask us. This place opens at 6:00 PM, so make sure you've already had a bite to eat before then or have a reservation for afterwards (or ramen from a vending machine, that's always an option too, of course!).
