Lalla Zehra: an intimate Moroccan cooking experience just outside Marrakech
Just outside the hustle and bustle of Marrakech, hidden among olive trees and wild flowers, lies Lalla ZehraA small culinary oasis where you can discover authentic Moroccan cuisine. No tourist traps, just cook, taste, and enjoy. Yep, Marrakech—we can't get enough of it.
At Lalla Zehra You'll immediately become part of the family. Host Othmane, who lives here with his wife from Amsterdam and two lovely daughters, warmly welcomes you. Mint tea and Moroccan pastries upon arrival get you off to a great start. Then you'll get to work in the expansive garden. Fresh ingredients, step by step, traditional tagines, and creamy zaalouk (eggplant and tomato salad)—you'll make it all yourself.
Don't worry if you're not a kitchen whiz, Othmane will guide you through each dish. While the tagines simmer gently, the aromas of turmeric, cumin, and ginger fill the garden. And then there's the tafarnout bread: make the dough, bake it in the stone oven, and voilà. Something you can easily recreate at home in your own oven, by the way.
While the food slowly cooks, there's time for yourself. Take a dip in the pool, soak up the sun, or find the shade of an olive tree. The surroundings are a fairytale in themselves. Meanwhile, the team of local women keeps a close eye on everything, ensuring your tagine arrives perfectly cooked on the table.
The highlight of Lalla Zehra It's the moment your homemade dishes arrive on the table, and you can dig in. At the long family table—beautifully set with dried flowers and all the trimmings—you'll savor not only the dishes but also the passion and attention that goes into each recipe. Everything here truly tastes of Morocco.
The best part? You can apply what you learn at home. Perfect for an evening of Moroccan cooking. And hey, with Christmas dinners coming up, you'll be perfect for the occasion.
