Eetcafé Maud, in the cozy Oud-West on the Bilderdijkstraat
At Maud's Eatery it is cozy. Not only is it located in the very cozy Oud-West, on the corner of the Bilderdijkstraat in Amsterdam (where you can sit in the sun until the wee hours), but the menu is also such a delicious no nonsense 'just good food'. The interior is cozy, the staff very friendly, which may make you stay a bit longer than you would like. One more Yuzu Pornstar Martini then? Yes, we like Maud. An 'accessible' go-to, but still with that golden edge
Okay, back to business. What are we eating? We started with the chicken bites and an oyster, just because we can. We continued with a sea bass ceviche with citrus, watermelon and dill, and the octopus with avocado, spicy tomato and a lime cream. Then as a snack the shells in a kind of coconut soup with focaccia. On to the main: roasted cabbage in brown butter with burrata (is your mouth watering yet?) and a bavette, served in herb butter.
En trust us: everything was prepared exactly the way you want it, from crispy to juicy, with a bite or just that sweet twist that makes the dish a little more exciting. There is also a special macaroni menu and no, not your usual macaroni, but macaroni with lobster. What a combination. Simple & chic. We finished with cheeses from the Ten Katemarkt. And satisfied into the nest.
By the way, we've been told they also serve a delicious lunch: think of classic Caesar salads, soups and special toasted sandwiches and bagels.
What was drunk? A big tip are all the sours on the menu, they have that perfect foam layer. Then the wines: hats off to whoever put together the wine menu. A Crémant Brut of chardonnay, in a very cozy (and large) glass. From dry to very fat, by the glass on the menu for the white wines. Our highlight was really the Merlot from Bordeaux.
Alcohol-free evening? The Pellegrino Rosso, sparkling iced teas en ginger beers are served just as pleasantly. Oh, and the unlimited water service (also sparkling) is also a winner, for only €3,50 per person. Then that headache the next day is not so bad!
Maud is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 17pm till late (which we assume: until Maud herself has had enough ;)). On Friday and Saturday there is a DJ, and on Sunday there is a pub quiz. Totally cozy there at Maud!
