It is best to try a perfume on your skin. And then preferably when you are wearing it for a while. Do you have a scent in mind? Then ask if they have or can make a tester for you. That way you can test the perfume on your skin and wear it for a day or evening. In the morning a scent smells completely different to you than in the evening. After a day you can smell whether the scent really suits you.

Sometimes there is no tester available. Or you want to make a pre-selection in the store of which fragrance you would like to take home as a tester. Then spray on one or more fragrances and go outside the store to smell. Or better yet, go shopping a bit and smell the perfume after 15 to 30 minutes to see what you think of it.

Imagine you are in a large department store and “just going outside” is not really possible. After smelling about three scents your scent starts to become a bit overloaded. You may be familiar with the bowl of coffee beans that is often found in perfume shops to 'reset'. What works better is to smell the inside of your elbow (provided there is no perfume there) to get a good sniff of your own body odor and have a fresh nose to continue smelling.
