Restaurant Amerikana, Utrecht
Current favorite in Utrecht? Restaurant Amerikana. By far. Everything about this place is just right, from the service to the interior (finally no more chipped walls and school chairs) to the food. It goes like this: the owners decided - inspired by their many trips to America - to bring something of the (food) culture to Utrecht, the best of that food culture to be precise. The restaurant serves small dishes for under €10. Don't be mistaken: even the classic dishes on the menu have been given a surprising twist.
The spareribs turned out to be a pasta dish with portobello. The Madame Janette popcorn served with pork belly and potato croquettes is not easily forgotten - a taste bomb. The shrimps come - of course - with Bloody Mary foam and potato salad, the quail with coleslaw and waffles with cheddar cheese. Everything, absolutely everything, is far from boring. The restaurant recently adapted the menu to the warmer summer days (that are coming) and a cocktail can now also be enjoyed on the terrace. Oh, and whatever you order: save room for the killer cheesecake! American

Americana is currently my number 1 place to go dining out in Utrecht. Everything about this place is outstanding. The service, the interior design (finally no brick walls and school chairs!) and of course the food. Inspired by their travels in the United States, the owners decided to present their own perception of American cuisine to Utrecht.
Amerikana is serving smaller dishes priced all less than €10. You may spot a classic looking dish on the menu but don't get fooled. Each dish surprises you. The ribs turn out to be a pasta meal with mashed portobello mushroom. The Madame Janette popcorn served with pork belly and hash-brown will leave a kick on your taste palette. The shrimps come with Bloody Mary foam and potato salad, what else! Quail and coleslaw. Waffle with cheddar. The combinations are surprising and well thought off. Definitely far from boring, exactly the type of novelty dishes we were all craving for a while. The restaurant has changed the menu recently to reflect warmer days and you can now also enjoy cocktails and bites on their outside seating. No matter what you order, do leave some space for the killer cheesecake!
