At restaurant Omahe in De Pijp you can eat good traditional Indonesian food with a modern twist
At restaurant Omahe In Amsterdam's Pijp district, you'll eat authentic Indonesian food. Just like you might know it from Indonesia itself – full of warmth, family, and conviviality – but with a unique twist. Because Omahe isn't just any Indonesian restaurant; it's a fusion kitchen that mixes traditional flavors with surprising ingredients, all presented to perfection. Omahe In Old Javanese, "house" means "home" and represents "our home." You'll feel that feeling in everything: from the interior to the taste of every dish. It feels like you're at home (well, if you're at home in Indonesia, that is), with delicious Indonesian food, nice people around you, and no over-the-top interior and above all a lot of coziness.
What immediately stands out? The three incredibly friendly owners. Together, they've created something truly special in Amsterdam's De Pijp neighborhood. Omahe occupies a corner of the street, where you can relax on the terrace in the sun (or shade). Inside, it feels homey and warm: the details are reminiscent of Indonesia. Lamps, cozy corners, and yes: you can even order a Bintang here.
You'll start the evening with a lychee negroni – so refreshing. Afterward, it's a treat to sample the owners' three favorite dishes, each representing their roots and memories. For Berlian, also the chef, it's the Saoto Ayam; for Yoga, it's the Ikan Pesmol (a fried fish from West Java); and for Jasmin, it's the Udang Jimbaran from Bali (Balinese grilled shrimp). All dishes immediately evoke that feeling of home: of sharing, trust, and warmth.
Besides the food, the drinks are also a treat: exciting pandan cocktails, for example. The highlight? The pandan crème brûlée – soft, creamy, and perfectly balanced. And don't forget the dadar gulung. Especially paired with that pandan cocktail, it was a finale we won't soon forget. If you're lucky, you'll also get to see the charming Polaroid photo wall.
At Omahe, passion for cuisine is paramount, and you can taste it in every dish. It's Indonesian food as you might know it, but with just that little touch of luxury and finesse. Cozy, small, but high-quality. Almost fine dining, but with the warmth of an Indonesian living room. The goal of the Omahe team? To introduce people to Indonesian dishes in an accessible way and perhaps even build a community where everyone can come together, share bites, and, above all, enjoy. There's so much more than the traditional Indonesian rijsttafel we all know. So: want Indonesian food in Amsterdam, but with a unique, contemporary twist? Put Omahe at the top of your list.
