Italian with a twist: restaurant Porta Sud in Breda

Restaurant Porta Sud is a little hidden in Passage Zuidpoort in Breda, but once you find it you will be richly rewarded. You eat Italian there, but not the way you are used to. 'A modern interpretation of Italian cuisine', is what chef Ralph Geerts calls it. We are fans!

The restaurant is not that big and that immediately creates a nice atmosphere. You can order all kinds of tasty treats from the seasonal menu, or you can opt for a multi-course surprise lunch or dinner. The staff will advise you on the tastiest – usually Italian – wines. On the changing menu you will find dishes such as agnolotti, a type of ravioli filled with chestnut and porcini mushrooms in a burnt butter gravy (our favorite!) or shrimp with grapefruit, burrata and herb oil. Also nice: Porta Sud has a complete vegetarian menu and that is just as good.

The fact that it is really tasty here is also proven by the 14 points it received from Gault & Millau (the major competitor of the Michelin Guide). You can go to Porta Sud for lunch and dinner. Definitely do: book the four-course lunch package, including accompanying wines, followed by table water and coffee. Or one of the specials, such as the truffle lunch or winemaker's lunch.
