Restaurant Renilde in Rotterdam: art on your plate
You just have to know it: high above the city, on the sixth floor of that gleaming, futuristic, and absolutely unmissable Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen, lies restaurant Renilde. Almost in the clouds, with a stunning view of the Rotterdam skyline. Renilde is one of those places that transports you to taste, atmosphere, and art.
Executive Jim Young cooks as only he can: guided by the season, vegetables and the finest ingredients take center stage, and love is in every detail. And what's more: there's no need to stress about making a choice. You'll be enjoying a 5- or 6-course surprise menu that's perfect from start to finish. And how.
The sixth floor isn't just any sixth floor; the location is special, to say the least. The Boijmans Van Beuningen Depot is a work of art in itself. The Rotterdam skyline dances in its reflection, inviting you to take a walk. deep dives in the (gigantic!) art collection, a dinner at Renilde or a combination of both.
Once you go up in the glass elevator – right through all the works of art – you arrive at your final destinationRenilde's restaurant is bright, spacious, and modern. The tall windows, pink neon lettering, long, robust wooden tables, and the smooth cast floor, combined with the soft, reflective stainless steel ceiling, create a warm atmosphere. The atmosphere is relaxed, no frills, but instead, the most beautiful and thoughtful dishes paired with equally well-matched (natural) wines.
Chef Jim cooks with whatever the land, the season, and his own creativity offer. And that's a lot.
Lots of vegetables, lots of detail, and lots of love. An unexpected preparation of an oyster mushroom, a turnip, or a beetroot, black mousse with crunchy truffle, and something you didn't even know could be crunchy… Each plate is inspiring, fresh, and meticulously crafted.
The menu? No two days are the same. Sometimes there are dishes that return for a season or a few weeks, but with dishes that change daily, it's safe to say the kitchen team isn't afraid of a bit of creativity. New showstoppers are conjured up daily.
By the way, the dessert at Renilde's is in a category of its own. We fell for the clementine ice cream with meringue and a jelly accent that was beyond words, just wow for existence. Although we don't know what's on the menu this week, everything will undoubtedly be top-notch again.
What makes Renilde special is that everything is perfect. The location is iconic, the food is refined, and the atmosphere is warm and relaxed. You're sitting in the middle of—or rather, on top of—a temple of art, yet it feels like you're dining with people who simply love good food and are happy to share it with you. By the way: we would have appreciated a candle on the table, but hey, that's all we can really say.
So, if you're looking for a place where art and food go hand in hand, Renilde is your go-to. Bring your binoculars (no joke), because the view from the rooftop terrace is almost as spectacular as the food on your plate.
Tip: Book a combo ticket. This gives you access to the Boijmans Van Beuningen Depot and allows you to enjoy a 4-course surprise menu at Renilde's.
