São Lourenço do Barrocal, Alentejo, Portugal
Who else was looking for a lovely (family) hotel (where dogs are also welcome!) in Portugal, but not where everyone goes? You too? No problem, we have it. São Lourenço do Barrocal is the name. Found in Alentejo, eastern Portugal (indeed, not near the coast), close to the Spanish border. And it is fantastic, really.
If you're about to stop reading now: wait a little longer before you zap away: São Lourenço do Barrocal is located at the foot of the medieval village of Monsaraz, near Alqueva Lake. Swimming allowed. Recovery: swimming is a must! Just like strolling through the ancient streets of Monsaraz where the restaurants are authentic and the wine is astonishingly affordable. The pet-friendly (!) accommodation, which has been family owned for over 200 years (!), is located on a 780 hectare (!) estate where Portuguese cows graze right next to the grape fields: delicious wine is made at São Lourenço do Barrocal. We almost want to say 'of course'.
And that's not all: there is an on-site restaurant, a lounge bar, a pool bar, a spa (jajajaja) with a fitness center and a you-want-anything shop.
The hotel rooms are simple but beautiful. In a no bullshit design but comfortable. You probably won't be there much: the surroundings are too tempting. That lake indeed, but the general areas of the hotel are also wonderful. The patio, the restaurant serving traditional dishes from the Alentejo region, the various seating areas, the (seasonal) outdoor pool, the large dining room - everything is equally beautiful. This also applies to the estate surrounding the hotel: ask the lovely staff to prepare a picnic basket for you. There are more than enough shaded picnic spots right in front of your own house (the 'rooms' are all houses). Each house has air conditioning, cable TV, a coffee maker and a bathroom with underfloor heating, making São Lourenço do Barrocal also perfect in the early or late season.
Are you traveling with children? (I would) Then you really don't have to worry about them being bored: there are plenty of children's play facilities available. You can also borrow bicycles for free (also with a child seat) and the staff is happy to help you rent a car. Anyone who can and wants to ride a horse can also cheer: the environment seems made for it. The youngest member of the family restyled the whole place a few years ago. He installed new furniture that gives everything a modern touch, but that does not detract from the heritage of the buildings and the pristine meadows, olive groves and vineyards. The absolute USP of São Lourenço do Barrocal the owner is José himself: the Portuguese invented the word hospitality. We always enjoy a warm welcome.
