The holiday season has started again: these are the ultimate Schiphol hacks from team Barts Boekje

Summer has started again (yes!) and that means, besides sun, swimming, and lots of guilt-free ice cream, above all one thing: packing our bags and going. And if we are flying, then preferably via Schiphol AirportWith the right knowledge, your holiday there already starts off ultimately relaxed.

Many people feel that the holiday only begins once you have arrived at your destination, but that is a missed opportunity. That first cappuccino at the airport, the Italian pizza for your evening flight, and some nice shopping for your destination is all part of the experience. How do you get the most out of it? Not many people visit Schiphol more often than 'we' from team Barts Boekje, with our boundless wanderlust. After all, we have to personally collect the best travel tips, wink. That is why we asked the team for their best Schiphol-hacks and we'll list them for you. You're welcome.

Maartje: go Privium!

Maartje: go Privium!

From Breda, where Maartje lives, she prefers taking the train to Schiphol, but for an early or very late flight, the car is definitely the way to go.

“Because we fly so often, we have a Privium Plus membership (tip tip tip: there is also a Privium Plus Trial so you can try it for three months – ideal!). That offers several benefits, such as parking right at the departure hall (we wrote about this before: there is no faster way to park closer to Schiphol, nice for the outbound journey, even nicer when coming home when everyone is tired), but also access to the Priority waiting area at security and (if needed) fast-track passage with the iris scan. Please note: you cannot go through these last two with kids. Additionally, you get unlimited access to the exclusive Privium Lounges (I think that is so chic). Oh, and did you know that you also a Privium Lounge voucher can buy? It is ideal if you don't want to be tied to a membership, but you can also bring friends or family to the lounge with this voucher. You can buy it online or at the counter. So you can relax while waiting or working, and be provided with everything from drinks to full meals. Even better: during the school holidays, you can also buy a Lounge Voucher for your children!

Lieke: Shopping shopping shopping

Lieke: Shopping shopping shopping

Lieke: The selection at Today Duty Free is simply really, really good. From skincare and make-up to perfume and sunscreen (which I always forget to put on when I get home anyway…). And of course, that bar of Tony's or bag of chocolate almonds that miraculously never survives the flight. You’re also in the right place for a good gift for the folks back home (or just for myself). The prices here are up to 25% cheaper than other stores, and you can shop for Le Labo and Byredo (, for example!) there. The ultimate tip? Do a loop first and buy on the way back. Otherwise, you might end up running out of space in your luggage. A holiday feeling in shopping form, let's say.

Michel: first things first

Michel: first things first

Michel: “As far as I’m concerned, there’s no good start to the holiday without good coffee. At least if you have an early flight; otherwise, a glass of bubbly works too. Then you can still catch a few hours of sleep. Anyway, back to the coffee: for a really good cappuccino or flat white after security, I head straight to The Coffee SalonBut the Amsterdam coffee shop isn't the only specialty coffee spot at Schiphol: there's also Starbucks, Joe & the Juice, Stach, Eataly, and Lavazza! You can find De Koffiesalon in Lounge 1, on the way to the B, C, and D gates. Ideal. Already on your way to your D gate? Then Café Flor also an excellent barista coffee.”

Madiana: favorite stop

Madiana: favorite stop

Madiana: What really very few people know is the presence of Murphy's Irish Pub at Schiphol. This classic pub with red walls, TVs on the walls, and beer on tap is a bit hidden away. Genuinely a good spot! And otherwise is The Wanderer Also an absolutely great tip: my boyfriend and I love peering down out the window on the side here; it’s great for people-watching while you wait. Order a carafe of Limoncello Spritz or Paloma, or go for an Esma (coffee and a cocktail in one, double win) or a Tequila Sunrise for that beach vacation vibe.

Maartje: holiday gifts for the kids

Maartje: holiday gifts for the kids

Maartje: “When I’m without the kids, I find wandering around Schiphol absolutely delightful. A mini-break, even. But with the little ones… That’s a whole different story. Luckily, there are plenty of Schiphol hacks that turn waiting almost into a party. Favorite tip? The pre-holiday giftThe agreement at home is simple: before the flight, the kids each get to pick something to play with on vacation. Put a small foldable bag (or backpack) in your handbag that they are allowed to 'fill' (you can agree on a maximum budget, which is a must for children from about 8 years old). The anticipation starts weeks in advance with deciding what it will be, and once at Schiphol, everything turns into a sort of treasure hunt. Score a new cuddly toy, coloring book, or game? Mission accomplished. And alright, why should the kids have all the fun? I always allow myself a new book for the vacation, and my husband stocks up on Denksport books.

Naomi: walking the kids

Naomi: walking the kids

Naomi: No idea how it is with other families, but our kids always have tons of energy. Not surprising, a holiday like this is naturally very exciting. It is nice, though, if they can let off steam for a bit before they have to sit still for a long time. Fortunately, after security, Schiphol has the perfect place to burn off all that energy: the Kids PlaygroundA nice spot with a soft surface, airplane-shaped play equipment, and plenty of seating nearby. You can find this playground at Lounge 2 next to the food court. Multiple play areas can be found scattered throughout Schiphol.

Isa: book a security time slot

Isa: book a security time slot

Let's start at the beginning. After all, good preparation is half the battle. We asked the Barts Boekje team for their ultimate Schiphol hacks and one tip was by far most frequently mentioned: a security book a time slot, but our Isa, Chief Content Officer and the one with probably the most flying hours under her belt really swears by it.

"The endless queues of a few years ago are fortunately a thing of the past, certainly at Schiphol, and outside of peak season you are often through security in no time. Still, a time slot is surprisingly nice. You choose a time slot in advance, know exactly what to expect, and are on the other side within fifteen minutes. No unnecessary stress (especially that), no standing in line endlessly during peak season, and therefore more time for all the fun things to be found beyond security. You want it. Sounds expensive, but it’s actually just free (yes, really).

Jorien: last-minute shopping spree

Jorien: last-minute shopping spree

Jorien: “Because we prefer traveling with hand luggage, we sometimes forget things… No need to panic: those kids grow like crazy anyway, and that means a new summer wardrobe every year. So if we’ve forgotten a swimsuit, flip-flops, or those shorts again, we head to Donsje at Schiphol, among other places… But Sunglasses is also a regular stop (also for looking, looking, but not buying), chocolate at Chocolate House, and sunscreen from Rituals. And often, just that quick update on my and my daughter’s summer jewelry collection at My Jewellery.”

Maartje: Gucci and Louis Vuitton, sorry not sorry

Maartje: Gucci and Louis Vuitton, sorry not sorry

Maartje: “It is certainly not an everyday occurrence for everyone, and rightly so, but I got one of my favorite bags – a Gucci – from my husband at Schiphol. An impulse purchase (on my birthday, mind you: it is a tradition to go away or be away on my birthday, May 9th, if possible; it is often vacation time then, so it almost always works out!) and honestly: it was one of the best impulses of all time. It just goes to show what leaving nice and early can bring…”
