So you also go to Lidl for your vegetarian cravings! The supermarket is tripling its vegetarian range
Hurrah! Good news from the Lidl front for vegans, vegetarians (and flexitarians). Or actually just for everyone, because even the dedicated carnivore can occasionally think a little about what goes in there (and what effect it has on people and the environment). That is a great asset that more and more people are acquiring (hurray) and if even large supermarkets move along, then you know: this is not a trend, this is here to stay.
We were already disappointed at Lidl because of the best summer beer out there (and also the most affordable), because of their previous FutureGoods campaign and now many more vegetarian delicacies than ever on the supermarket shelves. In short: the affordable (and increasingly attractive) supermarket is significantly expanding its vegetarian range. Just in time Week Without Meat. We went for a taste and - spoiler alert - it was better than we expected. Even better: everything is on the shelves from today! Three, two, one...
In recent times, supermarket chain Lidl has started working rapidly on their vegetarian offering. Not that there was anything wrong with that, certainly not. We like to cycle around the block for the vegetarian ingredients from Lidl for our weekly shopping. But something more could have been added. Not once as much, not twice, but three times as much to be precise! Even more vegetarian snacks in the supermarket, even more choice of meat and fish replacement products and even more meal inspiration.
As of today, Friday March 6, 2020, Lidl's vegetarian shelf consists of cheese and vegetable-based products, as well as products derived from real meat (a more than excellent bratwurst, for example, and we are stocking up on the juicy lentil burger). There are pure products such as tofu and there are products that can still be cooked in the pan (such as 'chicken' pieces).
If you don't eat animal products at all (a good idea), you can choose between (no less than) 11 completely vegan products. That brings us to the next fact: 22% of Lidl's chilled fish, meat, chicken and vegetarian shelves now consist of vegetarian and vegan products. They are doing well! Then say again that vegetarian food is too difficult or too expensive (a frequently heard statement). No, on to Lidl.
We went for a taster (perks of the job) and enjoyed (no word of a lie) a striking and surprising range. The Next Level Citizen you really shouldn't miss it. It is even vegan and made from peas, wheat and soy. But the beet burger and the pita shawarma are also on our regular comfort food list. Lidl gets bonus points for the wide range of ready-made meat substitutes and the range of inspiring products to get started with yourself. 'Bacon strips' and loose 'minced meat', for example. And now you again!
