Blue, bluer, bluest: blue catering in Amsterdam
Trends come and go, but in the Amsterdam hospitality industry there is one trend that seems to last. Now we don't want to pretend to be trend watchers (although that is also a hot profession among the oat milk elite), but we have not missed the fact that a striking number of tents with a blue, and specifically cobalt blue (also known as Barts Boekje blue), facade or branding have appeared in the Amsterdam streetscape. Time to list them.
Cafe MADS is a cozy cafe on the Zoutkeetsplein. Open every day from 8:30 for coffee from cobalt blue cups on stainless steel bowls (talk about trends..), lunch and drinks. From Thursday to Saturday you can also dine there, the other days they close at 18:00.

Glitch Bakery in the Jordaan is known for its richly filled sandwiches. With only three varieties, the choice is limited, but that's actually nice. This way you have the chance to try everything once, including the different cookies and cardamom rolls. In the spring of 2025, Glitch got a little brother: Fermént in the Westerpark. Moss green could well be the new cobalt blue. To be continued ..
In 2024, Blin Queen opened a second location in Amsterdam East. The interior was thoroughly overhauled and the result was so fancy that the threshold was just a bit too high and residents stayed away. Not the intention, so time for makeover number two. Tables and chairs were given a lick of cobalt blue paint, the expensive dishes on the menu made way for less expensive but equally tasty pancakes and the name was changed to BQ CanteenFor refined dishes you can still go to Blin Queen on the Amstel.
The kiosk of OOO Coffee aka Out of Office Coffee is located at the Westerpark, because; life happens outside. We can't deny it, that you have to take your coffee with you is no problem. Enough stools, benches and grass to sit on in the neighborhood.
You may have had enough of all those French bakeries with croissants and sourdough bread, but not us. Farine Boulangerie & Café in Bos en Lommer you can go for a cup of coffee with a pastry or slice of sourdough bread. They are open from Thursday to Sunday and, unlike many smaller places on this list, also have larger tables with space for you and your laptop.
Salvo, because that is the name of the owner of Salvo Bakehouse. started his baking career during the corona pandemic and quickly became hot en Happening. At the monthly Hermitage market in Amsterdam his baked goods were completely sold out. Time for something permanent. Because where nobody could have imagined a few years ago husband (a cut open brioche-like bun with whipped cream) or Bombolini (Italian donuts without a hole, with filling), Amsterdammers now queue up for them on the Tweede Hugo de Grootstraat.
There's no better way to end the day and list than ice cream. Miuz Gelato has become a household name in Amsterdam. The ice cream parlor has a stylish interior and an Italian owner with a lot of love for the business. Just like us. Even the burrata ice cream (yes really) passed our test with flying colors.
