As if you are entering a foreign country right away, when you reach the driveway of Chateau St. Gerlach drives up. On the edge of the Ingendael nature reserve, with rolling hills in the background, we call this scenery "our own little piece of foreign land" for good reason.

That's right, you'll feel like you're in a fairy tale on this stately Limburg estate. The estate has its own church, but also a rose garden, a beautiful courtyard and magnificent salons. You can spend the night here in style in the recently renovated rooms and suites. And relaxation? You'll find that in the spa and wellness. Restaurant Les Salons serves the most delicious dishes with local products from its own WIJland (read: a huge vegetable garden and vineyard for and by the local area), right next to the Château.

Who, what, where? Château St. Gerlach is located a ten-minute drive from Maastricht on the edge of the Ingendael nature reserve, which makes for a beautiful picture. Nature in the background, five-star luxury in the foreground and history in the back of your mind. Château St. Gerlach is a former monastery with a leasehold. Historical details can be seen everywhere, and the salons in the castle remind us of the centuries-old history of the estate.

Very old, but in a brand new jacket. The renovations and refurbishments of the hotel rooms and facilities such as meeting rooms, wellness and catering, make the hotel go from four stars to five stars top goes. The hotel in St. Gerlach is the only and first hotel with this classification in Dutch Limburg.

 

And they were not given that classification for nothing: the staff is super friendly and the service more than good. You can tell from everything that it is a family business of the Oostwegel family (owners of Oostwegel Collection, including the Kruisherenhotel Maastricht, Château Neercanne and Winselerhof).

And although the hotel sounds chic, which of course it is, it is really a place to completely unwind. The hotel has 59 hotel rooms and 55 hotel apartments (Corneli Residences with four stars). Each room is beautifully decorated with modern and rural tones, a beautiful bed and a nice bathroom. Don't miss the spacious spa and wellness - very nice.

Also very nice is to wander around the estate, because it is a lot bigger than you might think in advance. You become zen in the rose garden, check out all the different statues in front of the hotel, there is a church, a vegetable garden, vineyard, there are two restaurants and you will find a lot of surrounding greenery.

Just a little more about the vegetable garden, because that's where the magic happens. The so-called WIJland, with its beautiful vegetable garden and vineyard, form the basis of the kitchens on the estate. Every Wednesday, enthusiastic volunteers come together to harvest the seasonal products.

What is harvested there can be found back on your plate in the evening at Les Salons: the restaurant in the midst of the extraordinary. Chateau St. Gerlach The former living quarters, kitchen, and dining room of Baron de Selys de Fanson form the backdrop of the restaurant. The rooms seem to have stood still in the past and have been preserved in pristine condition all this time, while the dishes from the chef and team on top of the world are. The team cooks with ingredients from their own estate and from the region: honey from their own bees processed in the sweets. Of such.

Les Salons is there for you when you casual fine dining bleeft with a menu consisting of 4 courses, 5 courses or 6 courses. You would do well to order that menu including accompanying wines (and of those there are a number of the grapes from our own vineyard) and you would do well to order the vegetarian Menu WIJland. One good vegetable dish after another strong vegetable dish.

With your stomach full, you sleep like a prince and then in the morning you sit down again for breakfast at St. Gerlach. A meters long buffet and full of local delicacies (from our own WIJland) and other regional products. Many of the dishes come from small farmers in the area. On the side you can order extra à la carte items.

But there is more, in and around the estate of Château St. Gerlach. As soon as the Dutch seasons no longer allow sitting outside, it is the cosiest inside at the other restaurant on the estate – Burgermeester Quicx. Because no matter how you look at it, sitting down for a good cup of coffee and a (big piece of) cake on the side is exactly what you want. And you are welcome to stay for lunch, because it is just as delicious.

We're not going home yet... Not yet, not yet. Lucky you that you can still park your car here, while you spend an extra day around the Chateau. As we said before: the service is top (ten points for the friendly man who guided us to the room and shared a good portion of history).

The reception is also ready for you at checkout with a bottle of water and various walking routes in the area, because you can hardly have been here without having explored the area on foot. Time left? With Maastricht and Valkenburg just a few somersaults away, you can still enjoy yourself for a while.
