The tastiest oliebollen in Amsterdam (but really)

The tastiest oliebollen in Amsterdam (but really)

Oliebollen. The pastry stalls seem to appear earlier and earlier on the streets every year. You won't hear us complaining, this typical Dutch delicacy - our New Year's Eve tradition - is nutritious (perfect greasy snack to party on) and, more importantly, especially delicious with a thick cloud of powdered sugar on top. But not all doughnuts are the same. With about six ingredients and some oil to fry in, making oliebollen seems like a piece of cake. Nothing could be further from the truth...

Baking the tastiest doughnut requires quite a bit of expertise. For the perfect doughnut, the batter must be prepared correctly and baked precisely to achieve the perfect result: not too greasy/soggy/dry/sticky/tough. we want a ball (secretly the favorite of: the Bakkerszonen) with a light golden brown color and creamy filling. Filled - with raisins and currants - or blind (that's what it's called in baker's language: an oliebol without currants) and not to forget: powdered sugar. Lots of powdered sugar.

Grandma Coby's oliebollen

Grandma Coby's oliebollen

Grandma Coby's Oliebollenbar is not just any oliebollen stall, but a good reason to buy an oliebolDuring the December months, 99-year-old Grandma Coby bakes her secret family recipe to raise money for the De Tijdmachine Foundation, an organization that brings lonely elderly people together with live music and dance during the winter. You can order the famous Cobybollen (with or without raisins) online and pick them up at one of the pickup locations throughout the Netherlands, where you'll usually be served hot chocolate during pickup. The idea? With every bag of oliebollen, you help a senior citizen have an unforgettable afternoon at a "Golden Oldie" party.

They are early, the Bakker's Oliebollenkraam with a stall on the Spaarndammerstraat and a mini stall on Westerstraat. They have been baking fresh oliebollen here since the end of October. In 2022 they were declared the tastiest oliebollen bakery in Amsterdam and that is not surprising with some 35 years of experience.

For the small appetite they have this year the mini oil/raisin balls with powdered sugar, cinnamon sugar or chocolate topping. You can also order the oliebollen via thuisbezorgd! Ha what a great idea.

The Bakers' Sons

The Bakers' Sons

Crispy on the outside, check. Nice and airy, check. Not greasy, check. And the taste is – you guessed it – check! The oliebollen from the bakers' sons are exactly as we want them. How could it be otherwise with two real baker's sons. Owners Martijn and Johan are 1) sons of bakers, 2) passionate about the baking trade and 3) started baking according to their own – and their father's – recipes. From sourdough bread and croissants to tarts and the unmissable oliebollen: everything is delicious! The secret? What the men sell is actually made (and prepared) in the bakery themselves. Think of the touring (rolling out and folding) of croissant dough, grinding (whole wheat) flour and the self-developed recipe for the oliebollen. Many (read: every) customer returns to the Bakkerszonen every year. The bakery has also previously been awarded as the most delicious oliebollen baker. Will you go for filled oliebollen with currants and raisins or oliebollen without?

Extra nice: for such a tasty ball you can go to one of the three (!) locations in Amsterdam (Noord, Oost and Oostpoort). And while you are there, don't forget to take an apple beignet - with extra thick apple slice and almond gingerbread paste - with you. Doughnut stalls

Doughnut stalls

What is more tempting than a doughnut stall? Well, they always attract you during that winter walk. You better not linger too long at one stall, but at another you should definitely stop. If we may give you a few tips, these are the absolute musts.

Are you in the north of Amsterdam and are you walking along the Haarlemmerplein? Then stop by the Bollenbakkers Oliebollen stall. And even though it is Leidseplein maybe not the place to be, the lines for the oliebollen stall there are always long - and that's not without reason. The oliebollen are really well-baked! This is the place to go for a classic currant bun or oliebol, but you definitely shouldn't skip the nutella bun either. Yummy!

Knocker and Stick

Knocker and Stick

You can get the tastiest currant buns at the sunny bakery Knocker and Stick in Amsterdam-Zuid. Never been? The sunny exterior is hard to miss, so you can hardly walk past it. Classic Dutch baking is done here, and their filled speculaas is an absolute must must-try! But here we are talking about the currant buns. At Klopper en Stolk, they really thought about everything, from the ingredients to the way they bake. The result? A rich bun with the perfect texture and a taste you won't soon forget. A word of warning: pay close attention when you get a bun, because baking can be quite sporadic here. You're definitely in the right place at the weekend!
