Pancakes and cocktails: third location of Moak and the first Bar Mokum Amsterdam!

Pancakes and cocktails, isn't that a bit of a strange story? You might think so, but still... Once inside Bar Mokum (why was there no place with this name yet?), in the catacombs (well, actually just the basement) of the third location of Moak (formerly known as Mook), the Amsterdam pancakes favorite (read more about Moak here) opened the dark, quintessentially Amsterdam yet oh-so-international cocktail bar. Pancakes upstairs indeed (the best in town), but you don't feel anything downstairs.

We don't have to elaborate too much about Maok: the contemporary restaurant serves stacks upon stacks of pancakes in every possible way, and is also very photogenic and therefore loved by many. It is not surprising that the men behind Moak (formerly Mook, but that was no longer allowed) opened a third location in Amsterdam. That became De Pijp. They weren't there yet. What turned out? The building also had an excellent cellar that, due to the lack of daylight, was slightly less suitable for a daytime affair (because no matter how 'all day brekkie' we all shout and honk, we move forward. pancakes usually on when the sun is still shining). And let the men also have a link. Cocktail king Leroy Soumokil, named Dutch World Class Bartender of the Year in 2014. Look, then 1 and 1 quickly becomes 3. There was still one problem left: how are we going to distinguish ourselves from all those other bars in the city?

That answer turned out to be just around the corner. Literal. Because why not take Amsterdam itself as the theme? Bar Mokum turned out not to be occupied yet, and the joke from (favorite!) Café Cliché in Amsterdam East, where all dishes were given typical Amsterdam names, also seems to work with cocktails. Just like chef Sidney Schutte, the gentlemen chose names like Trench Rider, Ginnegapper or Graftak on their compact menu. In this case, no steak tartare, tuna or warm hazelnut chocolate cake, but long drinks 'old fashioned' style (Soumokil makes extensive use of Dutch distilled spirits, such as jenever from Bols, which recently returned to Amsterdam) and gin and tonic (“the absolute sucker among gin and tonics. To pimp on class"). No hassle at Bar Mokum! We think that's the best thing about the whole place: everyone is welcome, from yogurt drinkers to Malays. It is an ode to the city, smart and tolerant with classy cocktails, but without the cold poop. And of course a tune here and there. (From Dre to Dré, so to speak.) But just keep acting normal. Otherwise you're just going to wobble. According to the site. Love for Bar Mokum.

Where?

Bar Mokum is located at Ferdinand Bolstraat 11, where restaurant Simpel used to be. The third store of Moak Pancakes was opened on the ground floor of the building at the same time (the first store opened in De Clercqstraat at the beginning of 2016, as part of the repurposing of the shopping area and the building there. In addition to this location, Moak Pancakes has also been located in the Jodenbreestraat for years).
