Road trip through South Limburg: the best route including stops (winter tip!)

"Our own piece of abroad", as is also said South Limburg. This is because things are a little different there than in the rest of our country. Nowhere in the Netherlands are they so familiar with the terms Burgundian and hospitality, the hills make the winter months look even more beautiful here and the traditions complete the winter fairytale. And then we haven't even talked about the wines, caves and cities in combination with nature.

Enough reasons to travel to South Limburg. A roadtrip was made this way: the only difficult thing was the selection between all the places. Well, we did that for you too. This is the ultimate road trip through South Limburg, including the best stops.

How long does the road trip take you? up to you. Whether you take four days, or you only take part of the route, which you can do in fewer days. And have you got a taste for it? bAlso check out the other winter road trips on the website.

Do you want to wake up in Maastricht on the first day of your road trip? You will find it in a picturesque street with a white church in the Statenkwartier Cousins boutique hotel and you are guaranteed to sleep well there.

Day 1: Maastricht and surroundings

Day 1: Maastricht and surroundings

Center Maastricht: and whether we start the road trip with a good Limburg pie. Rhetorical question, because after all we are there for a reason. In any case, there are plenty of catering establishments in the center of Maastricht and very (read: very) nice and good restaurants.. But don't forget the district called Wyck: the nicest place in Maastricht. Actually the second nicest, because the best at the moment is the winter market Maastricht. You can go there until December 31. In any case, the center and the Christmas market of Maastricht will keep you busy on the first morning of the road trip.

Chateau Neercanne: we leave the city behind us for a while, because high on a hill is Chateau Neercanne must visit. l'Auberge de Neercanne is located in the former stables of the castle and here you can fine lunch. In the intimate and cozy setting, we cook with products from our own vegetable garden and region.

Apostelhoeve: So, the ground is laid. On to the next stop, completely in a Limburg atmosphere. Looking out over the rolling hills, on top of the Louwberg - one of the most beautiful places in Limburg and close to Maastricht - you sip your wine during a wine tasting in the vineyard of Maastricht. You can go there all year round, just call in advance.

Do you really want to do this road trip properly and do you have more time? Then follow the Mergelland route: a car route along all the highlights of the South Limburg hill country. The official starting point of the route is Maastricht station, but it is possible to join at any point. Nice to at least follow a bit during your trip. Get a booklet at the tourist office in Maastricht.

Village Eijsden: enjoy a glass of wine (non-alcoholic for Bob, of course), then go to Eijsden for a short stop. A piece of France in your own country in this village with colored shutters, the castle and hills in the background.

Mescherhei lookout tower: in the middle of nowhere suddenly a tower, where you have a view of Belgium on the one hand and pure nature on the other: it only happens during a road trip. At this lookout tower you can see very far away and that is more than worth a visit.

Sleeping at Hei 15

Sleeping at Hei 15

Hei 15: exactly what you hope it will be, plus quite a bit more. A wonderful holiday home with a passion for design, the surrounding nature and farm life. You can spend the night there and gaze through the windows, which offer a great view of the moor. Breathtaking (never say again that the Netherlands is not beautiful!). And fun in the colder months with a hot tub and fire bowl outside. Don't do anything about it anymore.

At Hei 15 they also offer massages, if you let us know in advance that you want one. The breakfast here is completely focused on slow food and a quiet start to the day. No problem, then we'll just do that.

Hei 15

Day 2: Gulpen and surroundings

Day 2: Gulpen and surroundings

Slenaken: the first day was busy, so the morning we wake up we start quiet. Or you start with the Slow Food Breakfast from Hei 15 and then get in the car. Or you can sleep in and start with a pico bello lunch in Little Switzerland at Puur restaurant. The restaurant of Hotel Klein Zwitserland overlooks the oh-so-beautiful valley and the menu is a gift for yourself.

Route des Vins Wahlwiller-Eys: Who says that there are only wine routes in France, we send them directly to South Limburg. The first signposted wine route has been launched in the municipality of Gulpen-Wittem. Around Eys and Wahlwiller you will find an educational route of about ten kilometers, where you will pass no fewer than five vineyards and the romantic 'wiengetske', aka the wine road.

Gulpener brewery: beer gives wine… Oh well, in the case of Gulpener Brouwlokaal it doesn't matter. Even if you just go there for a nice lunch. For example, in the brewery café they serve the brewer's lunch: a tasting glass of beer or juice with a brewer's soup, a richly filled beer spent grain sandwich and a small delicacy. Beer lover? You can make a reservation in advance for a high beer, there is a microbrewery and perhaps the nicest thing of all are the centuries-old vaulted cellars of the brewery. There you will discover a unique beer collection with more than 100 styles from home and abroad by candlelight during the 'Vintage Beer Tasting' package.

Gulpen-Wittem Eys: still some energy left in your legs? Drive by car to Moorenheideweg in Enkelrade, where you can park the car in the unpaved parking lot. From here a 5,5 kilometer walk starts, called the Gulpen-Wittem Wil Eys. Follow the blue arrows and you will pass a place called the Tuscany of South Limburg.

Forest café 't Hijgend Hert: a mountain hut in the 'mountain village' of Vijlen. Completely hidden between the trees. It is quiet (wonderful), it is sweet, beautiful and romantically dark in winter. Everything served on the table is more than worth the walk up.

Domain Holset: is a pretty nice bed & breakfast in the middle of the Limburg vineyards. This is where you end up if you're looking for the best of both, no, 'multiple'worlds. This has everything to do with the fact that Domein Holset is, as mentioned, a bed & breakfast. The second point is what we are quite amazed by: you are among the vineyards (we repeat: among the vineyards), where Domain Holset produces their own sparkling wines. And finally, everything is incredibly beautiful and bursting with sparkling wines.

Day 3: Valkenburg and surroundings

Day 3: Valkenburg and surroundings

Gasterij de Koffiemolen: on to picturesque Valkenburg. We prefer to start a visit to the city at Gasterij de Koffiemolen, where the coffee is served hot and it is very cozy. So off to the old French Water Mill (hence the name) in the heart of the center and just walk in.

Valkenburg Christmas market (until January 7, 2024): You haven't been to Valkenburg without visiting the Christmas market. The Christmas market is quite an understatement, because Valkenburg is actually transformed into a Christmas city. You know, you have that Christmas market under the caves, but there is so much more. There are lights, there is music, there are events for young and old and you can take the ski lift up. You have until January 7th to visit. Or to go twice, that is of course also possible.

Chateau St. Gerlach

Chateau St. Gerlach

Chateau St. Gerlach: Les Salons, in the middle of the special Chateau St. Gerlach, is fantastic. The former living quarters, kitchen and dining room of Baron de Selys de Fanson form the setting of the restaurant. The rooms seem to have stood still in the past and have been completely preserved in perfect condition all this time, while the dishes of the chef and team are on top of the world. The team cooks with ingredients from their own estate and from the region: honey from their own bees incorporated into the sweets of the High Tea. From this. But there is more, in and around the estate of Chateau St. Gerlach. As soon as the Dutch seasons no longer allow outdoor seating, Burgermeester Quicx will be the most cozy place inside. Because no matter how you look at it, sitting down for a good cup of coffee and a (pretty big piece of) cake next to it is exactly what you want. And you're welcome to stay for lunch, because it's just as delicious.

And we prefer to spend the night at Château St. Gerlach.

Day 4: looking for warmth and the return journey

Day 4: looking for warmth and the return journey

Thermae 2000 in Valkenburg: What could be more fun in winter than a visit to the spa? Okay, maybe the Christmas markets, but Thermae 2000 is doing quite well. And it is not without reason that we are in Limburg, which is why we prefer to combine a visit to the spa with wine. Nowadays you have a real wine outing at Thermae 2000 in Valkenburg, where you can take a wine bath – yes, a wine bath. To spend the rest of your mini-trip rested or to go home recharged.

Castle Elsloo: nice for the way back to stretch your legs. But also nice for a walk in the forest near the castle. There is a botanical garden adjacent to the castle that you can visit when the volunteers are working in the garden in the morning. You can also enjoy delicious food at Elsloo Castle.

If you're really into the road trip vibe right now, then the book '12 road trips through the Netherlands' by Hey Frits, a very good one to grab!
