Things to do during SAIL Amsterdam 2025

SAIL Amsterdam is back! From 20 to 24 August, the IJ will once again be transformed into an open-air party where boats, music and fun come together. Even if you can't tell a ship from a sloop: it's worth it. With 10.000 (!) ships, parades, boat trips and partying until sunset. These are our favourite tips to get the most out of SAIL 2025.

August 20 | SAIL-In Parade

August 20 | SAIL-In Parade

We start with the classic: the entry of the Tall Ships. From 10.00:XNUMX gigantic sailing ships sail from the North Sea Canal towards the city. The flags are fluttering, the atmosphere is immediately set, and if you get a spot on the water in time, you have front row view of this colorful spectacle. Bring snacks, sunglasses, and wave.

SAIL 2025 = Triple celebration

SAIL 2025 = Triple celebration

And this year? Extra special. We celebrate not one, not two, but three anniversaries at once: 750 years of Amsterdam, 50 years of SAIL and the 10th edition of this sailing spectacle. A triple celebration.

Where to go? Everywhere. Along the IJ, on the quay, on board. Think: parades, picnics, fireworks, live music. Even if you have nothing to do with ships, you want to be there. Because let's face it: a party that only comes once every five years, that's what you sail out for, right?

Visit the Tall Ships

Visit the Tall Ships

After the Sail In, the Tall Ships can be visited for free until noon on Sunday morning, from IJhaven to KNSM Island. Admire the impressive boats and meet the crews. It's best to download the Sail app to see which boat is moored where. The boats open at 12.00:10.00 AM, and some remain open until 23.00:XNUMX PM. Behind the Passenger Terminal is one of the Stad Amsterdam and one of the largest sailing ships Shabab Oman II. This last boat represents peace, friendship, and cultural exchange. A must-see.

Heineken & Verpact celebrate sustainability

Heineken & Verpact celebrate sustainability

When you think of SAIL, you immediately think of crowds, and that's absolutely true, but a pleasant crowd, of course! But crowds often mean mess, and that's precisely what we want to avoid. That's why Heineken and Verpact are celebrating their 62-year partnership during SAIL with something special: the world's first "float-in." This is a 0.0-meter-long floating platform on the IJ River, which serves as a Verpact recycling point for Heineken XNUMX bar. Visitors return their empty (deposit-refundable) containers and toast with a chilled drink (a win-win situation).

As a wonderful cause behind this, all proceeds will go to the Plastic Whale Foundation, which is committed to clean water. In addition to the Drive-in, Verpact and Heineken will also provide multiple recycling points on the quays, cleaning teams, and mobile drop-off points to keep everything spick and span. If you're interested, you can even sail with Plastic Whale to help clean the water. So now there's not one, not two, not three, but four anniversaries to celebrate!

Check Sail.nl for the complete program, boat routes, updates and tickets for special events.

Tip: arrive on time, choose in advance what you want to do, and don't forget your sunscreen. Read on Bart's Beauty further for the best sunscreens.

Every evening | Light shows & fireworks

Every evening | Light shows & fireworks

When the sun sets, the second part of the day begins. Every evening between Wednesday and Sunday there are light shows and music that illuminate the IJ. Sometimes big, sometimes smaller but always atmospheric. Bring a blanket, find a spot by the water and watch the evening take shape. Perfect moment to round off your SAIL day.

SAIL On Stage

SAIL On Stage

SAIL is not just about boats, it's also about vibes. From Wednesday 20 to Saturday 23 August, you can end each evening with a live show on the water. On the NDSM wharf, a large stage is ready for four evenings of music in all flavors: from classical to pop and from dance to Dutch sing-alongs.

And all of that with the sunset, the water and thousands of boats as a backdrop. Afterwards there will be a light show, so stay put. Check here the line-up and score your tickets.

Sleeping on the IJ during SAIL AMSTERDAM 2025

Sleeping on the IJ during SAIL AMSTERDAM 2025

Have you always dreamed of sleeping on the waterfront of the IJ in Amsterdam? This is your chance! In honor of the tenth edition of SAIL AMSTERDAM, a major nautical event that takes place in Amsterdam every five years, and Amsterdam's 750th anniversary, Booking.com is launching a once in a lifetime experience that deserves a mention: the Sailing Skyline Experience. What? That means you (and your partner) can literally have a front-row seat during SAIL 1, from August 2025th to 19st, with a view of everything that passes by.

Book this experience and you'll spend two nights in a luxury suite at the Sir Adam Hotel, high up in the A'DAM Tower, with panoramic views of the IJ River. From your room, you'll witness the spectacular Sail-In Parade begin on August 20th: gigantic tall ships sail into the city one by one, flags waving in a festive atmosphere. A relaxing experience, without the crowds along the quayside.

But that's not all. The experience starts with a check-in on Tuesday, followed by a 15-course dinner (yes, really) at Wolf Atelier, across from the hotel, above the water in an old railway bridge. The next morning you can enjoy a delicious breakfast after which you front row the Sail-In. In the evening, a dinner awaits at NEXT NDSM followed by a musical evening at the NDSM wharf during the opening concert of Sail on Stage, featuring the Concertgebouw Orchestra Young, among others. The event concludes with a fireworks display over the IJ River.

Even after check-out the party isn't over: you'll get a private tour of an authentic tall ship and then sail between the ships on a saloon boat, while enjoying an extensive lunch.

And all that for €25. All in. Too good to be true? No, but you do need a bit of luck (and an alarm clock to set your alarm when the booking page opens): the experience can only be booked by one person, exclusively on August 14 at 10.00am via Booking.com. First come, first served So. Good luck!
