Out of the city, into nature: bird watching in the Wormer and Jisperveld
Sometimes it is all we need, closer than we think. It's just a matter of catching the train and off you go, towards the Wormer and Jisperveld. Just 30 minutes from Amsterdam you will find a green oasis and before you know it you will be among the meadow birds. The Healthy City wants to introduce more people to this beautiful nature reserve and therefore recommends two fun and educational routes. Bird watching in the Wormer and Jisperveld is perfect for the whole family.
Even more fun ones walking tips in the Netherlands?
A vast landscape with mostly water and meadows: we all know this typical Dutch picture. Wonderful for walking and cycling through, and this is an important breeding area for the godwit, our national bird. You can get there in no time from Amsterdam, but the meadow birds have had a long journey before they settle here. 70% of the godwits fly all the way from West Africa to the Netherlands to raise their young here and that is no small feat. Areas such as the Wormerveld and Jisperveld are therefore very important for protecting these meadow birds.
For the bird watchers among us: this is your momentt. Birds of all shapes and sizes can be seen in this nursery, so grab your binoculars and go on an adventure.
Get moving with the leg carriage or on your steel horse. And there is still something to learn. De Gezonde Stad recommends the best cycling and walking routes that provide you with interesting facts and hotspots during the tour.
De hiking trail of 10 km starts at the station in Wormerveer and from there you hop past special places such as De Zaanbocht, De Schaalsmeerpolder, various meadow mills and the Potstal natural monument. Along the way you can have a picnic at the Schaalsmeerdijk picnic area, drink coffee at Batavia 1894 or have lunch at Restaurant de Hofjes.
Would you rather en route on two wheels? The cycle route of 27 km departs from Purmerend and takes you past ditches, canals, vast peat meadows and endless water. To name a few pearls: The Neckermolen tea garden, Limosahoeve care and meeting farm, the Poel farm, meadow mills and of course lots of birds along the way. You can stop at the tea garden or the Living Room of Wormer for a well-deserved snack or extensive lunch.
Although we love the city a lot, sometimes it is nice to step away from city life for a while. Get a breath of fresh air, but different. This tip fits well into the category 'fun for together and with the family'.
Take your bike on the train (fast and better for the environment), or rent one from Dirk Visbeek bicycle rental.
