Yo, it's a Hotel: YOTEL Amsterdam
A new one arose in the always pleasant Amsterdam North spiffy hotel hotel up. Spiffy? Sure. Hotel YOTEL Amsterdam, the topic of discussion is - so to speak - the hotel of the future. The hotel is located in a circular neighborhood and that is a conscious choice: to the fact that Noord the place to be is in Amsterdam, YOTEL believes in investing in both the future and the neighborhood. Hence the circular.
Circular you say? Come again? It works like this: residents, companies, other (knowledge) institutions and the municipality of Amsterdam work together within this circular city district and focus on sustainable energy, smart use of raw materials, reuse, climate resilience and sustainable traffic and transport. YOTEL's way to go: for example, the group produces the super-smart hotel cabins in a factory where they are rolled out ready-made to prevent waste and waste of raw materials.
Both the decking and the paving stones around the hotel are all 'second-hand' and/or recycled, no gas is used anywhere in the hotel and the roof is planted: all to connect with the entire circular movement in the neighborhood. Fun fact (we think): the hotel itself is - of course - made of a sustainable material that looks the same today, but will still look the same in 60 years. In other words: it is not or hardly subject to weathering and wear. Sustainable much (and we now also want this for our own facades).
Good, positive stories, and we have a few more of them: just read our announcement from YOTEL here, with all the crazy things that are happening in Amsterdam North from now on, or very soon: New smart hotel in Amsterdam: YOTEL Amsterdam.
Apart from all those background stories, you might also just want to know what it's like?! We got it, so we went to investigate. On to Amsterdam Central Station, on the ferry, a few steps and voila, we are in inspiring Amsterdam North, where you will find YOTEL on the Asterweg, not far from other inspiring sustainable places such as De Ceuvel, De Ruimte and vintage mecca Neef Louise and Van Dijk & Co. Prime location, tap box.
If you arrive in the dark this winter, like us, then YOTEL is impossible to miss. Follow the light of the disco ball. It's almost impossible not to want to peek inside. Good idea, whether you stay the night or not (we'll come back to that in a moment).
However: do stay asleep. Checking in is super fast thanks to the self-check. Exciting? No. And if it doesn't work, there are human resources (friendly boys and girls) ready. Done? Then you go to the right, hold your newly acquired YOTEL card in front of the card reader near the glass plate and enter je your home for a while. All rooms are ultra-smart cabins where you have everything you need in just a few square meters. A gigantic bed in particular, with a button you can adjust the headboard completely vertically. Perfect for endless Netflix sessions, I hear you think. Beats! The TV at your feet (lit in the color of your choice: there is also a disco ball option!) communicates with your phone via Bluetooth and WiFi. If you have the Netflix app on your phone, you can easily watch everything on TV straight away.
What else? No unnecessary clutter in your room, such as a desk that no one ever sits at, for example (your socket is next to the bed in the bedside table - stop looking!). And you take a shower - and we think this is very cool - with a view over the city. Please note: the city does not see you! You're that high up. And if you still have doubts, you hide behind the screen ;-). You'll sleep like a baby thanks to those durable and, above all, soundproof walls – wonderful. A nice mnemonic to breakfast: that is also delicious. No crazy things, but exactly what you want and need. Fresh bread. Jam. Ham. Cheese. Egg. Tasty.
If we stay at the mnemonic for a while, we will walk around the same restaurant because a really good dinner is served there in the evenings.
The cozy, colorful room is then attractively lit and the atmosphere is what we love so much: locals and hotel guests in the mix (it is not without reason that the neighborhood is popular with young people who still manage to find nice affordable homes in North and who are working on circular living commit. Find a spot at the bar (our favorite) and a spot where you can peer into the open kitchen. Or, if we're talking about lunch, in one of the seats where you can look outside (you can also sit there in the evening, but you can't see much then, because it's dark and all). The restaurant is surrounded by windows, so there is a lot of daylight. During the day. The menu mainly features many classics (never change a winning team) and there is something for everyone. Hamburger? Satay. Shrimp. Count us in.
Did we already mention that YOTEL's looks are absolutely stunning? We are in love with the blue and white tiles in the restaurant in combination with the wooden tables and open kitchen: a beautiful match. And: the lamps that hang at different lengths are also take-away material. Can't, we tried ;-).
Last round of plus points, because it is possible: YOTEL has a great terrace right next to the restaurant on the water: unobstructed view and therefore free sun. Perfect spot for the summer of 2020, just so you know. Add to this the fact that, in the same summer of 2020, an outdoor cinema will open in the cozy courtyard and you have us with us all summer long. Now that we are outside: we found the birdhouses (with food) that hang everywhere and are oh so sweet.
If we stay inside, we will happily take another look at the extensive games showcase, which is full of games such as Uno and Monopoly, but also a simple deck of cards. We like. Speaking of diving: you can also do that in the small but very complete hotel shop. You can purchase stuff there for your own minibar or to go, that's also allowed.
Your last dive? They can enter the enormous gym, right next to the reception. Or the hotel's website at: Yotel
