Sleep in the most beautiful and special cabins in Europe
Wild camping sounds more like a punishment than a holiday. An alternative is glamping and that, if it is really glamp, is very nice. Yet sometimes you want a little more luxury, not in a tent (even if it has a bed) or just to sleep in something really nice. Well, then you're in the right place with this list of cabins. From really small wooden cabins with all the trimmings to large cabins packed with luxury and comfort. Survivals, drops, hunting and gathering; We leave that shebang to someone else. Wake up to the smell of pine needles in the Ardennes, close but still out in your own country, in the warmth of Spain, the wilderness of Scotland or the mysterious Faroe Islands. Cabins can be found everywhere and we have collected some very nice ones in Europe.
In the same category (ish) are of course also included Tiny Houses or, if you're really crazy, staying in a tree house.
The Netherlands
Don't tour for hours by car, make good use of those long weekends, enjoy the Dutch nature. Oh, it's so nice, on holiday in your own country. Because secretly, the Netherlands is really very beautiful, if we look past all the rain and wind. Where better to enjoy nature? When you sleep in nature. And that is possible, in cabins. There are plenty of cabins in the Netherlands, very nice ones too.
Holidaying in your own country is of course already one of the most sustainable options, but it becomes even better when you stay in a fully sustainable cabin - or better said, a natural loft. This is possible at Landgoed Moerslag in Limburg, just before the border with Belgium, in the Heuvelland. As the name suggests, the lofts are located in the middle of a relaxing rolling landscape. The nature lofts are completely energy neutral, which means that solar panels and heat pumps generate all energy. Impressive right? The walls consist mainly of glass, which really gives you the feeling that you are one with nature. Zen mode activated. Due to its remote location you enjoy complete privacy, so no curious neighbors can peek in. The loft offers all the luxury to fully relax, with the wood-fired hot tub as a highlight.
On to Dalfsen, because that's where you'll find Villa Poppenallee. There you unpack your bags for one Little Escape in the cozy accommodation of Villa Poppenallee. Adjacent to the living room you will find the garden room with a wood stove and sliding glass walls, where it year round being 'outside' is nice. There are also three bedrooms and there is also room to take the offspring with you on a trip. A bonus point is of course the aforementioned stove, but we certainly won't forget the sauna either. And the kids can enjoy themselves in the garden (with swing and slide).
Cabiner? Yes, beautiful cabins equipped with everything you need. The exact location of your vacation cabin? You will only hear this when you have booked. So exciting. One thing is certain, the location is somewhere the Drentsche Aa. Cabiner was created by three adventurous friends who love nature. After a long trek across Senja, Norway, even a simple hut was a luxury. The adventurers, in turn, created cabins at home in the most beautiful places in nature. There are now eight cabins spread through unspoilt Drenthe. All equally beautiful. The front of the cabin is made of glass, making it light inside and offering a wide view. The rest of the interior is made entirely of wood. For every overnight stay, a tree is planted in the immediate vicinity in collaboration with Staatsbosbeheer and they involve local entrepreneurs in the process. There are two different overnight stays: Cabin trekking en Cabin unplugged. With the first, you take a multi-day trip from Cabiner to Cabiner and if you choose the unplugged option, you stay where you check in.
One of the most tasteful addresses in Zeeland? That must be stylist Annette's business. In her 'House of Roozes' she collects unique, antique finds that she refurbishes and sells. Even more fun is that you can now also stay with Annette and her Roozes: there is a cozy Gypsy wagon in the garden, of course photogenically styled by Annette. Everything clever and everything beautiful and everything but the image of the Pipowagen that you probably (we understand) have in mind. From April to the end of September (and perhaps even in October if the weather is nice) fingers crossed), French romance is there. The most un-Dutch few square meters in Zeeland.
Have you ever been to Appelscha? No? Yes? Anyway, this is a great opportunity. Literal. Outside, in the Frisian 'wold', you would Boshuis Nij Hildenberg just walk past, it is so hidden between the tree stumps. A deep black wooden forest house and can't really be called a 'cabin', but hey: would you have wanted to miss it? The house has been there since 1952 and over the years it has been completely renovated from the outside in (and inside to the outside). Rugs, Scandinavian stuff, lots of wood. You know what a cabin looks like in your imagination. There is a trampoline for the kids and the forest is one big playground. There is plenty of space inside: you can sleep up to eight people (if you want). There is a kitchen with all the trimmings and the wood stove makes the house complete. Anyway, see for yourself.
A special place: located in the middle of the Veluwe nature Bosvilla Hygge. Not just any villa. Ultra modern and ecological on the outside and with Scandinavian coziness on the inside. Lots of light, natural materials, clean lines, warm tones and a cozy atmosphere. There are two rooms with bunk beds for the small stuff. cozy together in the room. Even more fun is that the kids can go about their business in the woods. Sliding down the slide, swinging, jumping on the trampoline, swinging on a rope and building cool tree houses. That's all a child needs. The mini is happy and you have time to relax with a good book or a nice conversation. A happy you get, as the Danes call it, a hygge feeling here. Ah, hence the name.
Atelier Gaasterland There is a deluxe retreat in Oudemirdum. Away from everything, but not back to basics. In fact, the interior of the accommodation exudes so much colorful design that you spontaneously want to change everything at home. Everything has clearly been brought together with time and attention. The men have a passion for interior design and this is reflected in unique furniture and striking details. There is often Frisian art on the walls and the dark wooden kitchen houses only some of the colorful tableware that the owners have collected over time. Nice detail: upon arrival a bottle of white is cold and the Fryske sûkerbôle is ready. Here you are all year round absolutely fine, because there is a terrace and a fireplace. Breakfast can be provided on request by the baker in the village and be sure to visit the butcher yourself.
We will stay in the Frisian Oudemirdum for a while Studio Bosk. Straight out of an interior magazine, that is Studio Bosk in the woods of Gaasterland. The recently renovated forest house is more beautiful than handsome and wonderfully spacious. There are toys and a sandbox for the children and there are bicycles outside. A high chair and crib are provided. It's that the surroundings are so beautiful, otherwise we would settle down by the wood stove and never go anywhere again. Still going outside? Then your little one will be very happy at De Hege Gerzen beach pavilion on the IJsselmeer. Of course they can swim in the lake itself, but for the little ones there is also a paddling pool with a slide.
Getaway Deluxe is there for lovers of nature and comfort. The wooden cabins prove that these two things go hand in hand. The founders of Getaway Deluxe have a nose for original locations, so you are guaranteed to sleep in a great place in our own country.
Retreat spots at the most fantastic outdoor locations in the country; That's the best way to describe the cabins. Creative, rural and away from the crowd. As soon as you arrive at one of the luxurious wooden prefab cabins via all kinds of country roads, the real relaxation can begin. The wooden huts are small, but truly equipped with all amenities. The interior is functional, cool and warm and downright beautiful from the outside. Getaway Deluxe never skimps on quality and you can see, feel and experience that.
More Getaway Deluxe? Sure, here.!
The Forest is Calling. And it does. The Robbenoordbos in North Holland to be precise. The forest is calling and the outdoors beckons. Also for comfort seekers. Everything is ready, you just have to be there. You just walk your own path Forest Cabin inside the park. And in my humble opinion the most beautiful spot in Het Bos Roept. Because: a fixed bed, small kitchen and a wood stove. You can shower in the campsite's bathhouse, but there is a toilet available, which saves you a number of trips to the toilet roll. Of course, the bed is made and the towels are ready and a fresh breakfast is delivered to your door every morning. Do we need to reveal more? Okay, for the kids there is a playground with a sandbox and wooden structures to climb on. And there is electricity, and even a great internet connection! Are you still somewhat in civilization?
This little gift is located on the Veluwe, near Nunspeet. Not only can you step straight into the forest outside, but inside it is also a big nature festival through the large windows. NOYR has just opened, so it is wonderfully new and completely beautiful. A raised bed in a large window, that of course provides a picture-perfect prospect. NOYR has a unique, asymmetrical design and is fully equipped. You will find a fully equipped kitchen and bathroom. Even in winter, NOYR keeps you well insulated and nice and warm.
all-in You can enjoy Zwier in the Havenhuisjes. These circular houses have a very unique view over the harbor, picture-perfect from your bed.
All the comfort you need during a relaxing exhaust. There is also a private bathroom with rain shower - Yes! In the Living Room, the food is cooked with love and passion and carefully packed for take-away so that you can enjoy it at the comfort of your own home. You can also use the wood-fired hot tub, the sauna and explore the lake with a sloop, on a SUP or in a canoe. Yep, again included for all stays.
A Tiny House, a tree house, a cabin in the sky? Treehouse Goldsworthy is a bit of all three. It hangs in the treetops, floating above the meadows of the Gelderland landscapes. In the two-storey cabin you hang - like a kind of life-size beehive - in an old oak tree. The branches run straight through the house and yes: there is a hammock hanging from the strongest branch in the middle of the living room. Do you want to? You enter the cottage via the stairs and once you are inside, you can pick up the stairs with a rope and then no one can disturb you anymore. The hanging cabin has large windows, so it is full of the aforementioned meadows. There is a kitchenette, private bathroom, dining area and sitting area (with wood-burning stove). A super steep staircase takes you upstairs to the loft. There is a double bed ready and, because one could not be missing, a stargazer.
Boshuisje Tonden actually consists of three cabins, but that does not honor the designer of the beautiful house. No, Boshuisje Tonden is more like Villa Tonden and not your typical small cabin. You will find peace, nature and luxury under the (sustainable!) roof of this retreat. With ten bedrooms, there is enough space to bring a carefully selected group to share that peace, nature and luxury. The beds are made of Auping, the windows reach the ceiling, a delicious kitchen for the necessary self-sufficiency (but plenty to taste nearby). And no - of course - we won't forget the stove, with a sofa right in front of it that you will never want to get up from again. And further? Furthermore, you have nothing more than forest and trees around you and everything else the Veluwe has to offer. Our favorite feature of Tonden, one to end with; Outside you will find two spacious terraces with garden furniture, a fire pit and… a wood-fired hot tub.
Buitenhuys family, with the nicest accommodation addresses throughout the Netherlands, plays a game of Premier League in the Cabins League. We really mean it when we say that after a weekend in one of the five Familie Buitenhuys places we say that we have rarely seen a nicer house. They are unique in their kind. The newest Family Buitenhuys member can be found in South Holland. Every house is different, but one thing is certain, you can relax, recharge and recover in all five.
There is a small house in the middle of the forest of Baarle-Nassau. A small blue house as the center of all the greenery. The house is cozy and can sleep 4 people. Perfect for a weekend away with your family. What is this house called? Boshuis Nieseure. Can only be reached and booked via Instagram, so it is not yet well known among the crowds. Scoop, always tasty.
The interior can be described as: bold and colourful. With colors such as bright blue, pastel yellow, coral red and mint green, it is a joy to be inside. It may sound like a mix of colors now, but the house is very stylishly decorated, with beautiful rugs, a beautiful kitchen (with light blue and Yves Saint Laurent blue details) equipped with fine kitchen utensils such as an equally beautiful kettle (is that even possible? ? Have a nice kettle? Yes, that turns out), original Herman Miller Eames tubs in the primary colors. Just to quickly sum it up, yes, they do like a nice Mid Century Modern design here. And so do we, so that makes a difference.
It is nice that it is so beautiful inside, because you can also book this forest house in the winter. It is therefore not bad to hibernate indoors for a weekend with this interior. If you still want to sniff around outside, that is also possible. With an outdoor stove and cozy (fake) fur rugs, you can still enjoy nature outside in the evening, even in the winter.
In summer the forest is your playground. Or well, the playground for your children, and of course you can run around in it too, because the forest and nature have a lot to tell. The house has a lovely terrace, so if you don't feel like going on a hike, you can also relax close to home. Enjoy all the silence and tranquility that this place brings with a homemade cappuccino.
Sleeping in a tree house, but not just any one. Treehouse Miggelenberg is located three meters above the ground. It is a large tree house with luxurious facilities and a slide for the kids from the terrace down (secretly slides are always fun, so we won't judge if you happen to slide down yourself). Cozy loft beds (not very high) for the kids. And a double bed with a beautiful view for the parents. The beds are made of Auping and let's be huge fans of that at team Bart. This Tree House is located on the Landal grounds, where there is of course plenty to do for young and old.
Belgium
Just across the border, but still close enough to enjoy a quick weekend getaway.
Slow Cabins is a traveling single eco cabin at secret locations in unspoilt nature. How cool, right? Exactly what we want when we are looking for a cabin. Nature plus wood and a stove. It doesn't have to be that demanding. You have cabins for two or four. Without any fuss, it is explained what you can expect from the eco cabin (a wood stove, eco linen and bedding on the queen size bed, a kitchen, a barbecue and nature as far as the eye can see). Then enter another date (at least two nights) and voila, there are the options. Oh no, not: if you book with Slow Cabin, the only question is where you can find your cabin, after all, that is part of the formula. So exciting! And an adventure for everyone.
Be right back, go glamping in a large forest. Warredal is located in the Hoge Kempen National Park, close to the Limburg border. So if you want to retreat into nature for a while, this is the place for you. In the nature reserve you can really experience that back-to-nature feeling. It is a place where you can relax as a family, but where the children do not have time to be bored. Warredal has plenty of climbing parks, playgrounds and activities.
So yappers is definitely a big yes, and for the yappers we can add another yes. Even horses are welcome, if that doesn't say enough.
We also find Slô Cabins in Belgium, with almost the same name, but a slightly different concept. Don't we all need that sometimes? Especially in these crazy times? We do. You probably do too. And if more people have the same feeling, then it is a matter of time until a suitable and excellently connected concept emerges. Now it is not exactly the case that the new Slô just popped up in the Belgian Ardennes. Are you crazy: the amazing tree houses and cabins are the result of a balanced, sustainable, well-thought-out search for how you can really find that peace and quiet. That bodes well. There are six off-grid hanging cabins – a kind of tree houses where there is nothing but yourself. The design is minimalist (and beautiful) and all you do is attend a workshop - upon request. And further? Rest. You don't have to (or can't) do anything. The ultimate luxury, right?
One of the most romantic addresses in the Ardennes. The eco-resort covers six hectares and there are twenty accommodations. Seemingly simple: once checked in there is nothing to complain about. There is running water, electricity, a wood stove and additional heating if that is not sufficient. And each hut also has its own special feature: a river that flows under the poles, a bed in a bird's nest, a sauna or a Norwegian bath.
Everything is built ecologically: takes a little more time and energy, but the sustainability adds cachet. Order one of the baskets: a breakfast basket, tea basket, regional or drinks basket, and you don't have to leave your nest anymore.
The are located in the middle of the nature of the Ardennes Tiny Houses van Nutchel Cozy Cabins, in forest village Les Ardennes, a dream from the past that comes true here. You would move in right away. A meeting place where you roast marshmallows at the fire pit in the evening and unwind from everyday life: back to basics at its very best. Each cabin has its own terrace with picnic table for breakfast or extensive drinks. Don't feel like going shopping? Then you can also order a basket full of goodies from local and organic suppliers.
The cabins are sustainably built and furnished, so you have a wood stove in the middle of your cabin that provides enough heat and 70% of the lighting is provided by oil lamps and candles (is anyone romantic here?). There is a fully equipped kitchen corner, so you can also cook yourself here.
This is the ultimate getaway for with the family, friends or your loved one! From mountain biking, hiking, building tree houses, romping to visiting special sights or countless restaurants.
Spain
If you're looking for some rays of sunshine, head to Espanã.
Your own tree house over an hour's drive from Barcelona (and therefore perfect to combine with a city trip). The cabins of Cabanes als Arbres can be found in the Guilleriesbos, where electricity, running water and internet are scarce. What there are are sixteen wooden tree houses that float three, five or ten meters above the ground and which you can enter via a walkway or wooden ladder. Add some sangria and enjoy a back-to-basic overnight stay and an unparalleled view of the Montseny and the Pyrenees. On the website you decide how far you want to be from the base camp - with showers, a swimming pool, an extensive lounge, electricity, WiFi and a shop - and you book one of the workshops about the flora and fauna in the area. Also – especially – in the autumn/winter!
France
Route du Soleil, here we come! Looking for beautiful accommodations in great France? Here are some beautiful cabins you won't want to miss.
A wooden house on stilts. That sounds like the beginning of a bad joke. But it's certainly not a joke. This beautiful cabin is located on Lake Millet, yes, on stilts. This hut is a real winner if you want to get out into nature. Because you are already in the middle of nature. Boat and bicycles, if indicated in advance, are available. You can also enjoy a nice dip in the pond. And mind you, the pond is all for you alone, because it is part of the Cabane. The children can come along another time, because under the age of 12 you are not allowed to sleep in this cabin. Also nice sometimes, without those screaming kids.
United Kingdom
Nowadays it is very easy to reach, just by train or underwater by car. A holiday area where there is still so much to discover.
If you've ever been in one back to basics cabin you wanted to spend the night: Lazy Duck. They are extremely beautiful, the Lazy Duck cabins, spread out across Cairngorms National Park in the North of Scotland. From hearsay they are even more beautiful than the picture on the screen suggests. And while they are actually simple huts. Extra bonus points if you manage to transform it into a cabin of your dreams. But besides the fact that the spots are beautiful, they are also eco-cabins. That's where 'back to basic' comes in: the cabins appear to have been built down to the smallest detail based on the environment in which they are located. Nothing could be further from the truth. The houses are made from residual material from the area and that gives a beautiful colored jacket to the wooden houses. In addition, rainwater is collected, there are solar panels on the roof and - yes - you can step under an outdoor shower. Exactly, a real eco-cabin. But luckily there are also hot tubs, a sauna and a gas stove.
Glen Dye is magical. Point. You want to go there and once you're there, you don't want to leave. You are completely surrounded by wilderness forest, moorland, the banks of the River Dye and your own campfire and supply of Scotch whisky. You can book various cabins & cottages, but the ultimate favorite is The North Lodge. Nothing has been overlooked and you won't find them much more picture-perfect. As if all this wasn't enough, you also get the River Cabin – the most idyllic cabin (accessible via your own private footpath) on the River Dye where you can spend the whole day and evening relaxing outside, swimming wildly and cooking (on your Green Egg). For the colder evenings there is a wood stove or you can warm up in your own Swedish wood-fired hot tub, underneath the fairy lights.
Moved from bustling London to West Wales, and then created an oasis of peace in a small harbor town, Dave and Sian's cabins, or also known as cottages, provide that carefree vibe you want to find on holiday. The Dairy Shed is made from traditional stone barns, which have been completely renovated into super deluxe cottages with beautiful private gardens.
A nice thing about this cabin is the furnishings and decoration. Fully equipped, with a bathroom walk-ins show to a beautiful dining table, with patio doors leading to a private garden, and we haven't even mentioned the Nordic serving looks that this cottage brings.
The area where the Dairy Shed is located is also breathtaking, and there is plenty to do in the area. But you will probably just chill out in the cottage, because it is fully equipped.
Would you really like to recharge yourself in complete luxury? Bee Letteran Lodges you can certainly count on luxury. The cabin is located at the foot of the stunning Slieve Gallion mountains. With a panoramic view over these hills, this place will immediately give you the feeling of peace and freedom. But the special Guest at this place is that one hot tub. At the front of your house, you will immerse yourself in the nice warm water, with a vino in your right hand. The starry sky will awaken above you if you stay seated long enough. Doesn't this sound like real luxury?
Not Downtown Abbey maar Bolton Abbey. On the English tour then. According to Cat Gill Farm they are a campsite, but actually it leans more towards glamping. Because, man oh man, the choice is huge here. From your own tent to cabin to safari tents. The view is beautiful, lots of greenery, lots of nature around you and the places are large. Specially at Cat Gill, the Timber pods. What can you imagine about this? An ultra cute cabin. But it is not that small, because it can sleep about six people. Equipped with all amenities, hot tub, a beautiful bathroom and the kitchen is also in tip top condition.
And the yappers? They are allowed to come along in that Timber Pod. We think it's quite nice.
Scandinavia
The place where you want to be for a new dose of fashion and interior inspiration. Known for the colorful houses and the beautiful landscapes. Below are a few cabins for your visit to Scandinavia.
Ever heard of the Faroe Islands? Create a quickie: this archipelago is located in the Atlantic Ocean and belongs to the Kingdom of Denmark. It is not surprising that a trip to the Faroe Islands is easiest to make via Copenhagen. From there the plane departs for the Faroe Islands, where the nature is particularly beautiful. Just like the architecture. While crossing the islands, you suddenly come across a handful of peat houses with grass on the roof. These unique cabins alone are worth admiring in real life, recording or (secretly and best of all) staying overnight. In the middle of the sheep, highland cows and along a mountain river you will find Mulafossur Cottages. These houses have that typical layer of grass, which makes the peat houses so unique. The inside was renovated not long ago and you can enjoy it with four people. Own bathroom and a kitchen so you can make your own plans and hop from one Faroe Island to another.
View and/or book Múlafossur Cottages
There is a greater chance that there is no more beautiful place on earth to see the stars, the Northern Lights and... the midnight sun (when the sun shines over the Atlantic region for 24 hours). In the warmth of your own glass cabin, you can gaze straight into the sky. From your bed. Or from your hot tub. The genius idea of the Panorama Glass Lodges once originated as a perfect honeymoon location, nowadays you can rent one of the huts because you want to. We understand, because be honest; who doesn't want that? Even if it's just for one night. Anyway, the owners built two cabins spread over a huge piece of land (because privacy is still a thing and tinted windows are not, fortunately). Both have a fully equipped kitchen, bathroom and therefore a hot tub.
