Café Klein Nijmegen: modern French bistro with a touch of Amsterdam-Noord
From the outside, it invites Café Klein It starts out with a warm, lively atmosphere. Once inside, a surprising mix of styles unfolds. At the front, you feel like you are in a French bistro, with bistro chairs, white tablecloths, and wooden paneling. At the back, the atmosphere shifts and the place takes on a healthy dose of Amsterdam North, with aluminium details and a somewhat rawer, industrial look. Even the toilets join in: with the bright red light of a single fluorescent tube, they wouldn't look out of place in a nightclub. The logo also plays with this contrast, featuring a classic and a modern typeface side by side. The concept has been implemented down to the smallest detail.
On paper, it might sound like a hodgepodge, but at Café Klein, it works. The many empty wine bottles scattered throughout the restaurant act as the connecting factor between the two worlds.
Café Klein calls itself a modern French bistro where everyone is welcome, whether you're sitting down for an elaborate dinner or just for a glass of wine and a few bites. And the food? Damn delicious. The oeuf mayonnaise is highly recommended, as is the chicken with cherries and paprika: cooked in broth, grilled, and served with a rich paprika sauce.
Also nice: Studio Klein, an extra space that was previously only available for private booking, is now also being opened up to guests on busy evenings. This significantly increases the chance of securing a spot.
The icing on the cake: staff who know what they are serving and visibly enjoy doing it too. See you soon, Café Klein!
