Best restaurants in Hilversum

Hilversum Hilversum is best known for its media park... (duh), but believe us, making television isn't the only thing they're good at here... Hilversum has a surprising number of culinary gems, and we've listed them for you: these are the nicest and tastiest restaurants in Hilversum, according to Team Barts Boekje.

They really know how to cook at Chef aan de Werf, and it is such a lovely place to sit in the old industrial warehouse. The restaurant is located in the warehouse that used to be the municipal depot. Under the leadership of head chef Charly de Wijs (who gained experience at Auberge La Provence* in Laren, De Hoefslag* in Bosch en Duin, and De Kastanjehof in Lage Vuursche, among others), fresh, local, seasonal, and sustainable products are used for the dishes. And they are absolutely fantastic, including the vegetarian dishes.

There is burrata with wild tomato salad, watermelon, mint, basil, and crispy coriander; thinly sliced veal fricandeau with Dutch prawns, radish, cornichons, and lemon mayonnaise; saffron risotto with spinach, samphire, peas, and runner beans; and Irish beef tenderloin with green asparagus, crispy udon noodles, spring onion, and Gochujang. Although it is quite possible that the menu has already changed by the time you read this.

Studio Pasta

Studio Pasta

When we crave a good Italian restaurant in Hilversum, chances are we’ll end up at Studio Pasta. Because the pastas here are so good and filling! Just like the wine and coffee, mind you. In the restaurant itself, you can watch how the chefs make the pastas and then recreate it at home. Good luck! We hope you come close to how good they taste here.

Paisan

Paisan

The nicest city garden in Hillywood? That has to be Paisan! A surprisingly large garden with multiple pétanque courts and a real outdoor bar with plenty of seating in the sun. Has the Friday afternoon drinks started yet? We love coming here for a party. And for the food, by the way.

On the menu, you'll find small mezzes to share. Falafel, hummus, baba ganoush, or fish crudo. Oh, and we love grabbing a homemade pita here for lunch.

Puerto Burrito

Puerto Burrito

Mexican food in the Gooi has never been better since Puerto Burrito opened on Spuisteeg. They started out as a takeaway place but received an upgrade, albeit in the form of a full-fledged restaurant with a terrace. The interior is cheerfully colorful with Latin Art Deco on the walls and Latin records playing from the speakers.

The menu features Latin-inspired food where you can taste the work that went into it. That is how we were impressed with the slow-cooked pulled beef, homemade salsas, and finger-licking birria tacos. The quesadillas with salsa verde are also delicious. And a bowl of nachos for the table is a must. Don't forget the Modelo, Pacific, or a mezcal cocktail to go with it. Also nice: you can still order takeout and delivery.

Natalia's Kitchen

Natalia's Kitchen

In March 2022, chef Natalia Tkachenko arrived in the Netherlands from Ukraine. She now runs a small restaurant on Gijsbrecht van Amstelstraat where she presents Eastern European cuisine. A cuisine we may not know very well yet, but which is so worth it. Here it is:

You would do well to start with borscht, a deep red beetroot soup with beef, sour cream, and homemade garlic brioche, and then go for the handmade dumplings. Pelmeni with chicken or beef, varenyky with potato and mushroom, pierogi with cheese and spinach. Also worth trying are the deruny (crispy potato rösti) and golubtsy, oven-baked cabbage rolls in tomato sauce, which can also be ordered in a vegan version.

On Fridays and Saturdays from 3 pm, a dinner menu is added featuring dishes including kotlet schabowy and Silesian potato dumplings with slow-braised beef. If you want to sample everything, the chef's menu is 35 euros per person. Drinks include Polish beers, Georgian qvevri wines, and tea from a blender in Hilversum. And whatever you do, save room for medovik (layered honey cake) or syrniki, quark pancakes with jam.

Ninh Binh

The best Vietnamese dishes in-town, those must come from Ninh Binh! The restaurant is named after chef Phuong Tran's birthplace, in northern Vietnam. From Ninh Binh, she traveled to Saigon in the south and then flew to the Netherlands as a young woman. Together with Chính, she runs the business opposite the Hilvertshof.

Quick lunch? Then bánh mì (Vietnamese baguette filled with pickled vegetables, coriander, and sriracha mayo) is your go-to! More time? Then the phở with beef broth and the bún bò Huế are top-notch. And if you're with a group, order bao buns, gỏi cuốn (fresh summer rolls with mango), bánh xèo (crispy pancake made from rice flour, coconut milk, and turmeric), and the bò né. So, a table full of people. The dinner menu includes bò kho, a type of Vietnamese beef bourguignon with star anise and carrot; slow-cooked short rib glazed with garlic, fish sauce, and lime; and thịt kho trứng, braised pork with egg in caramel fish sauce.

Wow, what great options and choice! Flip's tip: you can always go for the three-course 'Taste of Ninh Binh' menu for 42,50 euros. You can't go wrong with that. Almost the entire menu can be ordered vegan, with tofu, seitan, jackfruit, and mock meat.

At the Gardener's

At the Gardener's

Restaurant Bij de Tuinman can be found on the grounds of Buitenplaats De Hoorneboeg, a beautiful and inspiring place for a photo shoot or company meeting, for example. The place is beautiful, and more people should be able to use it. So the people opened Bij de Tuinman, a vegetarian (with vegan options) restaurant with products from their own vegetable garden. You eat outside when the weather is nice, under a cozy tent canvas and lamps – nice and fresh in the open air. If the weather is bad, you can enjoy the on-site restaurant. If we had to choose what is nicer or more beautiful, we wouldn't be able to do that. You eat delicious and fresh dishes, the service is friendly and after or before dinner you can take a walk on the heath around the corner.
