Hotels and other accommodations to spend the night in (and a bit around) Haarlem
In America they would call Haarlem a district of Amsterdam... We don't want to go that far. Not exactly: Haarlem is a quieter version of Amsterdam. Between the city and the beach you will find the best of both worlds and this is where we like to rest our heads after a day of being busy. It is wonderful to stay at these hotels and other accommodations in and around Haarlem.
While you're there... A list of the nicest restaurants and coffee shops in Haarlem.
Look, we really wouldn't go so far as to say there is only one hotel in Haarlem. Certainly not. That would be doing the rest a disservice. But still… Merzlr House It stands pretty much in a league of its own in terms of design in Haarlem. Construction has been underway for quite a few years on the imposing grounds of the former De Koepel prison. We waited excitedly for the opening of Metzlr House. The time has come: the hotel that belongs to restaurant Menu Corridor is open. A reception is still under construction and such but you can sleep. For the time being, check in is in cell 51 in the Koepel (nice nice!). Get your coffee in the morning at Delicafé, go to the cinema in the Koepel and if you want to eat well in the evening, book a table - if possible in the cozy courtyard - at Menu Corridor.

There are two plantations just outside Haarlem that are worth visiting: restaurant Buitenplaats Plantage in Vogelenzang and hotel and restaurant and hotel (ha!) Rococo Plantation in Velzen-ZuidIn this Rococo-style country house – with a touch of rock 'n' roll – you enjoy peace and greenery, and are in the heart of Haarlem in no time. Best of both if you ask us.
A lovely hotel in Haarlem? Boutique hotel Staats it is. A romantic hotel to which restaurant De Ripper belongs. A nice place with 21 rooms in a former school building. A stay here feels like you are visiting friends: small-scale, intimate and embracing.
Staats in Haarlem consists of several parts such as the living room. Coffee, tea and filtered water are freely available here, as are home-made cakes and cookies. The Honestybar completes the event with savory snacks, spirits, wine and chilled drinks. Guests pick it up themselves and record it on a registration card based on honesty, which is what you want. All the freedom but the service. Also nice, when the sun shines you can sit in the sunny backyard.
Anegang Boutique Hotel is a gem of a Boutique hotel with six rooms and a spacious apartment. Exactly, small-scale but oh so cozy (in short: exactly like Haarlem itself). Checking in at Anegang is a little different than you might be used to. You check in yourself via a digital platform, there is no reception in the building and the mobile phone is also the key to your temporary room. That gives you the freedom to fill in the entire day exactly as you want. Look, Anegang understands everything.
Frenchie Restaurant in Haarlem we already knew. And we were already fans of the restaurant (named after the family dog = 10 points). Big plus now that the entrepreneurs above the business also opened five beautiful hotel rooms. The name? Hotel Frenchie. The small-scale four-star hotel consists of two luxury suites and three comfort rooms. It may be called an Urban Luxury Hotel. Okay. Give us that room with the bath and you won't hear from us anymore. The hotel serves a 4-course dinner served per course in the hotel room from Thursday to Saturday. Just like breakfast the next morning.
At Sea and the City you stay in a cozy house. A cozy house all for yourself, to be precise, in the wildly attractive Overveen. Just around the corner from the beach and you can also reach the bustling center in no time; we will come back to that in a moment. But it's not just the location that makes it a great place to stay... when the weather is nice, open the garden doors of B&B Sea and the City wide and the terrace is the best place to enjoy your meal. Oh, and everything is one too picture-perfect.
Since Adele we can't 'hellowwww' no longer hear, nor pronounce, without singing. Cheerful note for the benefit of the gentlemen and ladies behind hostel Hello I'm Local in Haarlem, they can't do anything about it either. The hostel is also quite cheerful, a wonderfully uncomplicated place in a Haarlem residential area, about 10 minutes walk from the city center. Hello I'm Local is surrounded by beautiful old buildings and the Spaarne. The hostel, or rather, boutique hostel with 12 rooms is blessed with the three K's: small, beautiful and cozy. One of the most important reasons to book a hostel, besides the price, is the coziness in the living room; also at Hello I'm Local: stay for coffee, a simple breakfast (cheese sandwich! we like. But also eggs and currant bun.), lunch (croquette sandwich!) or drinks (order a plank for at least 4 people with wine or beer, veggie or meat). There is also a cozy courtyard with a fireplace and a kitchenette; you can also prepare your own treats.
Pack those beach dresses, swimming trunks and bikinis because we are going straight to Zandvoort to check in at Suite-Suite. That's a detached guest house that is so beautiful and is completely in line with the free, light, hip Ibiza vibes without it too much is. Do you get it?
Behold, the perfect holiday home for large families (or with friends, that's also nice: you can stay there with ten people) a stone's throw from Haarlem on the North Holland coast where - drum roll - dogs are welcome by arrangement! The villa, Bosvilla Kennemerduinen is the name, is located in a beautiful spot in the dunes of IJmuiden (and therefore close to favorite beach bars Aloha and Timboektoe in Wijk aan Zee, which is 20 minutes by bike and you take the ferry along the way: double the fun). In the other direction you can reach Bloemendaal aan Zee in half an hour.
The former family home is nothing less than a unique country retreat with a spacious forest garden and complete privacy. All in all, it is exactly the kind of family home that you would hope to own one day, including outdoor living. Hello outdoor kitchen, hello deer that pass by at dusk. And for the branch of the family that would like some privacy, there is a small outhouse for two.
A great recommendation for a weekend escape from the everyday? Boutique hotel Bleecker in Bloemendaal. The young hotel is a stone's throw from the North Holland coast and close to Haarlem and Amsterdam. And yes, that is just as tasty and nice as it sounds.
The cozy breakfast and lunch shop is located in the cozy shopping street Kleine Houtstraat Toast. Above the business in the Kleine Houtstraat they have two small apartments where you can spend the night. Plus point: when you roll out of bed, you can immediately sit down for a delicious breakfast.
