A new favorite in the heart of Amsterdam: Kamer Bar
Aan the Westerstraat, in the unique building where for years café de Pearl was, sit recently Room Bar. New name, new owners, and a very nice place. No big story, no complex concept, just two people who know exactly what they want to create; fine dishes with a strong focus on the grill and seasonal produce. And they combine all of this perfectly with their love for natural wine.
With 32 seats, Kamer isn't exactly a big place, and that is precisely the point. The interior has retained its old Dutch character: classic tiles, lots of wood, that familiar brown-pub feeling of yesteryear, but elevated to something more refined. The menu is as compact as the space: small but perfectly formed, with dishes meant to be shared. Are you a couple? Then you can order the entire menu to share. There are other options too, but this is clearly how it is intended and how we enjoyed it the most.
At Kamer, everything revolves around the grill, and you feel that as soon as you sit down. The kitchen cooks with the seasons and dares to keep simple what can remain simple; take a grilled cucumber, for instance: a modest vegetable at first glance, but once it goes over the fire, it gains smoky depth, a touch of char, and just enough rich sauce to make it irresistible. *That* is the style here: honest ingredients, plenty of guts at the grill, and dishes that sound simple on paper but suddenly evoke a secret nostalgia in the mouth. The menu leans predominantly towards omnivores and protein-driven, so vegetarians are catered for but have slightly fewer choices—good to know in advance. And naturally, nowadays that calls for a glass of natural wine: pure, low-intervention, and carefully selected—exactly the counterpart this robust kitchen needs.
