Of course there are plenty of playgrounds, beaches and meadows in the ever-pleasant Zeeland, but what if you also want to sit/eat/have something to see? Then you pick the best hotspots from the list below and set off. Kids in the car, snacks and off to the land of Here on the Coast (where people unconsciously... Anyway, you get the point).
These are the nicest addresses for yourself (and okay, especially for the kids) in Zeeland.
Well-organized down to the last detail, a crackling stove and all sorts of cozy things nearby; that's a nice place Boutique Cottage De Phezant in Zuidzande. The Cottage sleeps six people (three spacious bedrooms and two bathrooms) and is beautiful. The handmade oak kitchen is connected to the living room, which is fully equipped. The eye-catcher? The large windows with a view over the polder. Restaurant Zilt&Zout is a 10-minute drive away, in Retranchement, and the restaurant is as beautiful as the name of the town it is located in (and the food as good!).
Not suitable for one night (bookable from a minimum of three) but a very handy spot if you do not want to sleep in different hotels, but do want to play out West Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. Enough to do in the area, for young and old!
This is a nice place for the minis. The restaurant has a special area where strollers can be parked, there are facilities for changing diapers and there is a super fun play corner for children! But it is also a ball for adults. You will find Mr. Nilsson in the heart of the idyllic Zierikzee in a beautiful monumental building. The plus points are that you can not only have a delicious breakfast/lunch/dinner here, but also for next to nothing. Mr. Nilsson.
Let's just start at the beginning. This small, wooden house welcomes you with a veranda. And… Inside it is also very cozy and small, nicely and practically laid out. Here you will find retro furniture, lots of green stuff, a mezzanine and an LP player. Even though it is small inside, you can enjoy the outdoors. Anyone who has ever eaten at Oud Sluis restaurant will recognize the address: De Eetboetiek is now located in the same location. You can eat there, and how, but don't go outside without diving into the food shop. Food boutique.
Opposite the dunes that lead you to the North Sea beach on the Zeeland island of Schouwen-Duivenland, lies the brand new (don't tell anyone else because they still have room this summer and dogs are welcome) Resort Land & Sea. This is a celebration for several reasons: 1) the resort is located in one of the most beautiful places in Zeeland. 2) You stay in those amazing, new, enormous safari tents equipped with every luxury. 3) Don't you want that? In such a tent, there is also a hotel and a 'normal' campsite. The terrace of the associated Restaurant Zeeuws Verlangen is located on the water, just saying (but otherwise this is mainly about the tents and the surroundings).
Whether you are checked in at Resort Land & Sea or not, the almost adjacent Strand Café DOK is recommended for those who are out and about with the kids (even without kids, by the way). This child-friendly restaurant is located on the Strandpark de Zeeuwse Kust in Noordwelle, close to the much better-known Renesse Beach Café de DOK. Winter or summer? Doesn't matter! The menu is surprising and full of tasty seasonal dishes (nice for you too) and the terrace of the beach café overlooks the enormous outdoor playground (nice for the kids too).
Do you want to have lunch or dinner inside? You will need to make a reservation for this. This is not necessary on the terrace.
Is it the South of France? Is it a dream? No! It's the Uitspanning the Houtzagwerf! On the edge of Kortgene in Zeeland, between the fields, you park your car on top of a dike and waddle down (following the sound of the saw). The small, friendly restaurant was of course not given that name for nothing: right behind a still-operating sawmill, a French country estate opened with a cozy, warm (dark) indoor restaurant. Especially in the summer months, an afternoon or evening here is an un-Dutch gift: chickens roam around the jumble of tables and folding chairs, softly colored cushions and blankets are everywhere and the small menu (sometimes it even indicates with chalk stripes how many plates are left are forgivable) is written on chalkboards. That menu consists of fresher than fresh products and is prepared with a strong French twist. And everything so, so soooo good. A holiday from the books, even if only for a day.
Also nice: if you want a piece of wood in a special size, or are looking for a rustic table top, it will be cut to size for you here. Win-win.
You will find this cozy house (because what's in a name, ha) on the edge of the center of Vlissingen and within walking distance of the beach and the boulevard. A place where you can catch your breath after a day in Vlissingen and not have to do anything at all. How about lazing in the city garden near the apartment? Sounds good. In the mini village of Ellemeet, you will find this mini-mini village with the name Country estate Oudendijke. Here are nice houses (with lovely beds) among the Zeeland meadows. And there is a vegetable garden, a flower picking garden (yes again!) and a playground with sandbox and slide and swings for the little ones, trampolines and go-karts for older children. Yes, it is a holiday park. But not just any one. One in the good sense of the word. Country estate Oudendijke.
Hands on each other Cocoon Houses, in our opinion the best tip for those who want to explore the Netherlands with their offspring. There are not one, not two but three Cocoon Houses that fully live up to their name: one in Drenthe, one in Zeeland and one in Limburg. Save them all, we say. The houses are not only beautiful, but also with all the trimmings. You really don't need the door either. Not only thanks to the well-equipped kitchen, but also because of the many comfortable beds, a wonderful sofa, cozy dining area and luxurious bathroom. Playing outside? Sure. You will find Number 9 in the historic center of Middelburg, a fifteen-minute drive from the Zeeland coast. Inside you will find a contemporary interior. The building consists of four apartments, all of which have a lovely bath, a fully equipped kitchen, a cozy sitting area with television and a nice box-spring bed. And there is enough space to put up a cot for the minis. Number 9.
Not only does the bright turquoise exterior of the house look delicious, because for now we are focusing on the B&B; the inside is just as attractive. Old Dutch cozy with a nice dress or checkered print everywhere you look. The B&B consists of four rooms with names of old Zeeland-Flemish villages such as Scherpbier and Sinte Pier, each with its own view over the nature reserve, from which you are only three hundred meters away. Admittedly, it is a neck-and-neck race between Uitspanning de Houtzagwerf and Het Kaslokaal when it comes to the prize for 'the nicest and most atmospheric in Zeeland'. Het Kaslokaal is also a great country estate in the greenery of Zeeland and here too the name of the place tells you what you can expect: a great catering location has been created in and around a greenhouse and here too the chickens happily range around. When the weather is nice, you can find a spot in one of the many seating areas in the enormous garden, and if it rains, the drops will patter on the windows of the greenhouse. There is always something to do for the little ones: a corner of the garden has been decorated as a (tasteful) playground, there are all kinds of reading and activity books (they all have the gardening theme - so much fun) and at the back of the wooden extension a play kitchen. Handsome little boy not enjoying himself.
And the snacks and drinks are also great! Everything is prepared with a lot of love and you can taste it. You will find the former gardener's greenhouse in Oostkapelle and almost everything served in the greenhouse and tea garden comes from the greenhouse, the garden or the surrounding area. When you say Zeeland, you say outdoor life. Sea, of course. But also green as far as the eye can see. Must be one of the most beautiful and fun areas Oranjezon nature reserve is a Dutch nature reserve of approximately 400 hectares on Walcheren in Zeeland near Vrouwenpolder. Until 1995 it was used as a water extraction area. Now there are horses, fallow deer and the occasional deer walking around, and a nature playground pops up here and there. The entrance is at the end of the cul-de-sac camping and Uitspanning Oranjezon - you can join the latter for a lemonade) between Vrouwenpolder and Oostkapelle. Immediately on the right in that dead end road is a parking lot (paid parking). There is also a bicycle shed at the entrance of Oranjezon.
Important to mention right away: Shed 10 in Breskens is open all year round! Yes. That's how we prefer them. The fun and attractive beach bar is your regular go-to point during your weekend in Zeeland, whatever the season. From the beach you look out over the always beautiful North Sea and in the distance you can see Vlissingen. It will come as no surprise that you are guaranteed to be in the right place after a lovely walk on the beach.
Domburg is a beautiful village and the best of that village on the Zeeland coast must be the Domburg Beer and Milk Salon are. A local for breakfast (above all), lunch, coffee and some shopping too. The Domburgsche Bier- en Melksalon is located in an old building in the center of Domburg and is the kind of place you would expect in, say, Amsterdam. Hip, that's what it is, but also uncomplicated, cozy and authentic. The name comes from the salon that was already there in 1911: a small beer place where you could immediately buy your milk. Exactly 100 years later, the salon was reopened. Upon entering, you will notice the large shelving units on the right, full of regional products (Zeeland beer from Peelander and Tons Mosterd, among others) and crockery. On the left is the enormous coffee roaster behind the old-fashioned wooden counter. It's a sweet touch here, thanks to the hospitable young couple who run the place. In winter and autumn, people sit at the large regular table or in the bright bay window, and in summer in the cozy courtyard, which was expanded in 2015 with the neighbors' garden. Breakfast is especially popular: well-filled sandwiches, with meatloaf or country ham, a hard-boiled egg, pickle and mustard mayonnaise, for example, or filled croissants and toasted sandwiches. Yogurt with home-made muesli and honey is also available. You can then continue on to restaurant the Visbar . Bathing pavilion, both in Domburg.
Picking flowers! Grab a wicker basket from the flower field and go. Bee Picking garden at Hazenberg court you can make a beautiful bouquet yourself in a beautiful place where you can also enjoy a cup of coffee and something tasty afterwards.
In the middle of the beautiful Zeeland landscape just outside the small village of Grijpskerke (not far from Goes) you will find a large nature and play farm: Hof Poppendamme. First of all: it is huge! Park and start at the large meadow where snacks and drinks are served from a small colorful greenhouse. There are bouncy castles, a huge sandbox, trampolines, bunnies, a real 'experience garden' (with herbs and nice explanations about what is what) and attractive seating areas for young and old. There is even an old caravan to climb in and through.
It is also with less weather the one and only place to be in Zeeland: the shed, that one Hof Poppendamme hot, is equally gigantic. The largest space was reserved for dining tables where you can have lunch (and birthday parties). There is an attractive side area for those who have a party to celebrate, on the side there is a bookcase and old-fashioned couches and if you walk to the back, the little stuff can have fun with real climbing frames made of wood, a moving car, everywhere toys and crawling and sneaking spaces. It doesn't get any more fun, I promise.
In Goes (where the Zeelanders replace the G with an H that must come from deep), the former chef of brasserie Appelmans (one of the nicest, or at least most modern, brasserie hotels in Antwerp in 2015) opens Hotel Katoen. The idea: Appelmans' (good) food supplemented with luxurious bedrooms in the former city archives of Goes. And so it happened. First the brasserie: there is a large terrace flanked by a wall of plants in terracotta pots on a cozy, somewhat hidden square. Inside, a large bar is central to the business, surrounded by round tables - the best idea for those who want to dine with a larger group - and both high and low tables for two or four. Through an open window at the back of the restaurant, the chefs continuously push uncomplicated, delicious Dutch dishes into the restaurant. Chunky sandwiches with shrimp croquettes, toasted sandwiches, a classic midday meal (soup, bread, smoked meat, salmon or cheese and a croquette), tenderloin steak, cod and goulash. But also homemade lemonade and lots for the little ones: there is a more than cozy play corner, there are books, Cotton's own coloring pages and a jar of lollipops that can fit up to three children (impressive, that jar, even for parents!).
You reach the hotel's 23 rooms via a modern concrete hall that connects the two buildings. The hall leads to a white staircase that takes you to the rooms, from regular bedrooms for two to luxury suites that can also accommodate a family for a few nights. There are two of the latter and you reach them via a walkway that provides a view of the roofs of Goes. Favorite? The suite with the loft. On top of the loft there is a large bed with creaking white linen, a handsome boy still coming out of it. Or it should be for an extensive bathing session in the freestanding bath under the historic old trusses.
Court Keizersweel in Wemeldinge is also called a hobby farm. You can do all kinds of things here: visit animals along an animal route, enjoy the terrace, throw a children's party or follow various workshops. Or just enjoy a High Tea or as they call it: tea drinks on the farm. Court Keizersweel
Ah, very, very often praised - and not only by us but by almost the entire Instagramming Netherlands - is Lief Huisje Zeeland, the wonderful holiday home in the Zeeland hamlet of Turkye, municipality of Waterlandkerkje (both tiny). Now Lief Huisje Zeeland is great, and the perfect base for a (romantic) weekend away for two, or if you need something to do on your own. Say, write a book or something. All great, but Lief Huisje Zeeland is not necessarily suitable for children because of the very steep and quite scary stairs. Good to know, right? But there is news! And it's called White House Zeeland.
The cute house is located at the end of the cozy Sint Janstraat Room, a children's café where the kids can play, more than enough for shopping and a sunny patio (Sint Janstraat 62).
Also very nice: the small shop Favorite. From Central Station it is a nice walk to the city center. Don't walk straight to the main street: just turn into the London Quay where the Lievelings gift and toy shop is located. Only favorite things here (Londonsekaai 1)
