Sweden in the summer? The ultimate itinerary
With the weather in Southern Europe becoming increasingly unpredictable and extreme, many Dutch people are choosing to holiday north instead of south. Sweden is the perfect destination for sun, sea, beaches, and adventure. In summer, restaurants, coffee shops, and small bakeries open in remote locations, offering an abundance of entertainment. Sweden, here we come!
The most pleasant way to travel
Sweden can be a long drive, so the Stena Line is the perfect solution to save some driving time. From Kiel, you'll board the sleeper boat around 19.00:XNUMX PM and arrive in Gothenburg well-rested the next morning. If you book well in advance, the boat can be affordable, and there are excellent cabins available on board for a good night's sleep.
You can easily spend two days in Gothenburg. With numerous great coffee shops, beautiful museums, and delightful city parks, there's a fantastic amusement park right in the city center for those who enjoy it, and you can stay in a family-friendly hotel. From Gothenburg you can easily visit the West Coast or you can choose a nice place to stay a little further north.
Sweden's west coast is breathtaking, with its mix of water and islands. The archipelago stretches from northern Gothenburg to the Norwegian border. Enjoy a wonderful night's sleep at Ladfabriken, a B&B run by two men (a Dutchman and a Swede) with a passion for colorful and cheerful interiors. Situated with a stunning view of the sea.
In this area a day trip to Karingon Don't miss it. Only 114 people live permanently on this island, but the lucky Swede has a holiday home here. You can enjoy a wonderful day of crab fishing, eating crêpes at the crêperie, or pizza from the only restaurant on the island where sourdough pizza is baked fresh every day.
To travel from the west coast to the east coast, it's wonderful to spend a few nights in the woods. Tiveden National Park is the perfect spot for this. It's a great idea to rent a cabin in the woods. You can easily find one via Airbnb.
From this location a visit to the park is of course a must, but also a visit to Garage Pizza & Vin, for a good glass of wine and pizza. Also the beach of Jönköping is worth it, where you can get a coffee at STUK café.
If you continue your journey to the west coast, a visit to Thin Don't miss it, here on the main street you'll find an overload of old candy shops where you can watch through the windows how candy canes, lollipops and other sweets are made.

Besides all the fun this city has to offer, there are also lovely bays for swimming and city-created swimming spots in the heart of the city and among the various islands. Looking to stay in Stockholm? The Södermalm district is very pleasant for families, but the city center also offers nice hotels with good prices in the summer. Renting a bike is also an absolute must to see and do as much as possible (and it's easy to do in Stockholm, which is relatively flat).

It's a shame to skip Gotland in Sweden. In fact, it's a must-see on your trip. It's quite an undertaking, as the ferry doesn't go very far and can be very expensive if booked at short notice. It's also a 3,5-hour boat ride from Stockholm.
On Gotland, you'll feel like you're on Texel plus, because it's bigger, but perhaps even more unspoiled and more fun. All the restaurants, cafes, and nature are beautiful. Many beaches and lovely hiking trails on this large island. A visit to the northern island of Fårö is also a must. Be mindful of the seasons, though, because in summer the island is hot and happening, but by mid-August, much of it closes for the rest of the year.

On safari in southern Sweden? Yes, you can. And in the enormous 925-hectare wildlife park, making it one of the largest in Europe. Large mammals like bison, red deer, fallow deer, and wild boar live here.
At Eriksberg You can sleep in the new section of the park, The Ark. It's a beautifully designed building where you sometimes sleep above the deer (which are especially active around the hotel at night). During the day, you can go on safari with a guide who has worked for the nature reserve for many years.
This area in southern Sweden is known as the "Tuscany of Sweden" or the "Provence of Sweden" for its beautiful light, creamy landscapes, and creative atmosphere. Normally deserted, it becomes incredibly hot and happening during the summer months, frequented by many Swede.
Here you can sleep in one of the wonderful hotels or in a good Airbnb in the countryside among the many cornfields. In summer, the whole neighborhood comes into action, and restaurants open pop-ups in the area. Fortunately, there are gems that are always open, such as Gamla Bageriet.

For a relaxing drive home from southern Sweden, it's worth including Malmö on your return trip, or a day trip to Copenhagen. A visit to the Arken Museum in the south of Copenhagen is a must, and the perfect break to stretch your legs.
