500 wines and fire on your plate – that's Badcuyp (De Pijp, Amsterdam) in a nutshell
Badcuyp is located in the 1931 building at Eerste Sweelinckstraat 10. Once a bathhouse, now a restaurant—and with the Albert Cuyp Market just around the corner, the name is no coincidence. Inside, it's spacious and warm, with dark wood tones, a light gray floor, and furniture that looks like it came straight from a well-stocked antique shop. Wine bottles everywhere. Typical café curtains hang in the windows, completing the atmosphere. A local shop, but with a generous dose of chic.
We started with artichoke with basil gremolata, candied shallot, lamb's lettuce and Oude Rispens – and believe us, we've tasted quite a few artichokes, but this one was a real standout. After that, we went all-in: a main course and a dish to share. The Basque chicken from the wood-fired oven was incredibly tender thanks to the sous-vide cooking. It came with fries and leek gratin (with plenty of cheddar, skipping it was not an option). And then came dessert. Sticky toffee pudding, straight from the same oven: warm, gooey, comforting – just stick a fork in it and you're done. Our menu? Absolutely spot on.
With over 500 wines on the menu, Badcuyp is arguably the wine destination of De Pijp. There are expensive bottles, of course, but also affordable gems. Be sure to check out the section “A lot of wine for €60.” – Here we highlight some great deals that are more budget-friendly without compromising on quality. Going for a bottle? The staff will always give it a taste first. Cork doesn't stand a chance here.
Badcuyp was founded by the young entrepreneurs Joep Hermans, Tobias Kuijt, and Martin de Nes. After working with names like Flore, Rijsel, Bar du Champagne, Helling7, and Panache, they opened a neighborhood restaurant in De Pijp, where fine wine and food cooked on an open fire take center stage.
