The town of Lake Louise is less than an hour's drive from Banff, with the lake of the same name a little further away. In summer, the beautiful azure lake of Lake Louise lies among a breathtaking scene of soaring mountains. In winter the lake is frozen several meters deep and you can skate on it. Another historic hotel is located on the lake: Fairmont Chateau. This pricey hotel is worth a visit even if you are not staying there.

Grand Budapest Hotel vibes at the Fairmont Chateau hotel in Banff. Magnificently situated on Lake Louise, this classic hotel with over 500 rooms and suites looks like it came straight out of a movie. The first chalet – which later burned down – was built in 1890. The building was then rebuilt and expanded into the chateau what it is now. A stay here is an experience. The hotel is 10 minutes from the slopes and when you get home you can skate on the frozen lake. The Fairmont Chateau has three restaurants so you no longer have to go out in the evening.
The friendliest town in the region is Jasper. The town was a classic railway town and the hustle and bustle that came with it is still palpable. During your visit, be sure to take the time to look at the miles of trains. This historic town on Jasper National Park – full of wildlife, lakes and glaciers – suffered a huge wildfire in the summer of 2024, which destroyed part of the town. The slopes and remaining hotels are open again and the town welcomes you in all their cosiness to rebuild the town. Skiing and snowboarding can be done in Marmot Basin. The Jasper Inn is a typical ski hotel. In terms of interior, the hotel is stuck in the eighties, but we like that from time to time. The beds are wonderful, most rooms have a lovely bath to relax the muscles and there is a swimming pool and restaurant. Sleep well, eat well, possibly relax the muscles and go to bed is all we want with a full day on the slopes.
Be sure to go into town in the evening. Jasper has many restaurants and bars full of fun. Jasper Brewing Company was packed every night – before the fire of summer 2024 – for beer and pub foodThey will reopen in the spring of 2025 and a visit should definitely be on your list then.
