inspiration everywhere (read: copy-paste please!): The Design Boutique Hotel

There was a time when you already had a Design boutique was as soon as there was a basket of green apples on your counter. If there were also cushions in the lobby in the same colour, you were a hero. Nowadays you will have to pull out all the stops to achieve this status. You see them popping up everywhere. Those places where so much is happening around you that as soon as you enter you don't know where to look and it takes three days before you have taken it all in (also called the Valhalla by the design lovers among us). Characteristic: use of many different contrasting materials, preferably an (authentic) floor, daring color combinations on the walls, art, rich, lush textiles everywhere with ethnic motifs and wallpaper with flora and fauna prints that alternate with a graphic, sleek play of lines. In addition, furniture and accessories from different movements, times, cultures and styles that are combined crosswise. Oh, and a lush abundance of plants in authentic, weathered antique pots should certainly not be missing. And There you go: inspiration everywhere (read: copy-paste please!): The Design Boutique Hotel.

Santa Monica proper hotel, LA, California

Santa Monica proper hotel, LA, California

The international designer of designers of the moment (saying and writing end of 2021) must be the (also equally gorgeous) Kelly Wearstler. What comes out of her hands seems to turn into gold. There are more interiors, and certainly hotels, that are the result of those golden hands, but the Santa Monica proper hotel may well take the crown. Brown tones, plants, design classics, exciting color corners, hustle and bustle but also a lot of peace (look, that's impressive) and everything we want at home in one hotel. In a great location of course, that too. And: all Proper hotels are actually equally beautiful. Expensive? Yes, also expensive. Proper Hotels

Let's stay in California for a while, where the inspiring hotel (because people with money (we think) are flying around your ears, then Hotel Joaquin on Laguna Beach should also be a curiosity. Not least because of the exciting art throughout the hotel, which is wonderfully (and remarkably) small-scale, and the lovely swimming pool.

By the way, the California Dream and the classic of classics are still there Chateau Marmont. Not to be missed if you are in the area, also 'just' for a drink. It is the place where the rich and famous collected and they still do. Château Marmont

Just Google this yourself. Just saying. The Bulles Palace

hotel Riomar Ibiza

hotel Riomar Ibiza

True, very large hotels are often not the design hotels we aim for (it is part of the Mariott group, after all – proof that this group has more and more cool hotel concepts) and Hotel Riomar Ibiza may, we believe, in terms of format the title corporate shop no longer wear… But the hotel turned out well! You can find it in Santa Eulària des Riu on the east side of Ibiza, a corner that for a while was a 'neglected child' compared to the beautiful north of the island and a part of Ibiza that we have completely rediscovered. Family friendly is there, and close to everything. And there are great hotels where you want to stay or just hang out at the bar. Hotel Riomar Ibiza can be booked via TUI, just to indicate that it is a very accessible gem.

The Enamorados, Ibiza

The Enamorados, Ibiza

Yes, here it is again. We can't get enough of it, but as far as we're concerned, it really can't be missing from this list. Lovers, the highly acclaimed unique authentic vintage design paradise in the north of Ibiza, which we will not elaborate on any further, but read here please continue quietly (note: they are closed during the winter months, so if it is on your wish list: definitely book for next season, because the rooms are - rightly - extremely popular).

Hotel du Cloitre, Arles

Hotel du Cloitre, Arles

Arles may not be the first French city that comes to mind, but really: Arles, and especially Hotel du Cloitre Arles, the detour is more than worth it. The hotel was recently completely restored in collaboration with the architect India Mahdavi (you know, the one from that crazy pink restaurant in London… No? We are talking about SketchThe hotel is located in a quiet back street in the historic centre of Arles. Steps away of the city's Amphitheatre and almost right up against the main square to: “Place de la République”.

Hotel du Cloitre, Arles

Usually, in such a place, besides sleeping divinely, you can also have an ultimate breakfast, lunch and dinner and enjoy the uber-hip bar and club respectively very sipping special cocktails on velvet-upholstered bar chairs. In the morning there is yoga on the rooftop and ethnic art hangs on the walls. The spa is the ultimate relaxation and you never leave the concept store empty-handed. Well, that's pretty much it. And we love-love-love it. A few European examples – to keep things feasible – of contemporary hotel heroes and in our opinion the very best sources of inspiration for your own home (forget Pinterest: travel!).

El Fenn, Marrakech

El Fenn, Marrakech

Okay, okay, Morocco is not Europe but hey, you're there in no time and this one really shouldn't be missing from this first inspiration list, right? El Fenn it is: already featured in many different interior magazines, and that is not without reason. This old palace in the middle of the old medina of Marrakech, has been converted into a true dream from a 'thousand and 1 nights' fairy tale. Each room is completely immersed in a different beautiful deep warm color, and at the same time has completely retained its authentic atmosphere. And that is now reinforced even more by the combination with modern design and art from all corners of the world. There are twenty-eight colorful rooms, ranging from large pied-à-terres to small creative sleeping quarters, and there is no corner of the hotel that has not been thought through. It starts with the bright pink entrance with a floor covered in babouches (Moroccan leather slippers) and continues to the roof terrace where you will find one of the hotel's three swimming pools, as well as the restaurant where a Moroccan menu with a Western touch is served from early morning until late at night: burgers with couscous, for example, chicken tagine in a colorful pot (not a tagine) and a simple changing daily menu with ingredients from the hotel's own vegetable garden.

Hotel Les Deux Gares, Paris

Hotel Les Deux Gares, Paris

Say 'inspiring hotel in Paris' and/or 'colour!' and there is really only one correct answer: Hotel Les Deux Gares by the young, equally colourful designer Luke Edward Hall. remember that name. From the outside you wouldn't say that it's such a party inside: the building that houses Hotel Les Deux Gares is a discreet building on a narrow, inconspicuous Parisian street. It is. It is a mischievous whole composed with a perfect sense of mismatch. There are 40 small bedrooms, divided into three cheerful colour schemes. Each room has striped headboards, velvet armchairs with fringes and boldly colourful bathrooms. They are little boxes of chocolates. In the corridors hang tributes to cultural greats, from Jean Cocteau to Angela Davis to Queen Elizabeth II, which Luke himself drew by hand. The basement houses a compact gym with a surprisingly charming decor: floral wallpaper by Svenskt Tenn and a red and white chequered floor. Enjoy, from A to Z.

More Paris

More Paris

Hotel Thoumieux is one of our favorite places to stay in Paris: sheltered, dogs welcome, fantastically friendly staff, fantastically delicious food and a fantastically beautiful interior designed by the same architect who is responsible for the aforementioned Hotel de Cloitre. Imagine. The hotel is not in the heart of the city, but in the 7th arrondissement, near the Eiffel Tower (6 minutes by bike), which is also nice. Hotel Thoumieux, Paris.

And there is more, much more! Here are some examples: Hotel Planque, Private Hotel Montmartre, Hotel Amour (both locations) and Hotel Jobo from the Paris list you must be.

Yes of course Morocco is one big copy-paste to home oasis. Examples of beautiful riads and hotels galore. Knife to the throat? OK:

Cote d'Azur

Cote d'Azur

Just like California, the South of France is a wonderful region with the most beautiful and inspiring hotels. Take Hotel Les Roches Rouges for example. You will find this beautiful hotel from the hotel chain Beamier Hotels in Saint-Raphaël. Everywhere you look, you will see the charm of the French Riviera. Dreamy pine trees, a saltwater pool and spectacular views over the sea. Very good. All rooms have their own balcony or terrace and it really does look like the rooms are merging into the sea. Inside, it is decorated in the colour palette of the French Riviera. Mediterranean blue, Esterel-red and lemon yellow. Original art hangs, there are uber cute baskets with dried flowers and yet another basket with a thick, soft towel to take to the beach, the speakers are sleek and… Well, they have thought of absolutely everything.

A dot of pink? They have that too, over there French Riviera. Because there is a new feel-good hotel on the block. Fun for with your partner/friend and the kids can just join in the fun. The name? Hotel Casarose. Read more

Although we are also big (!) fans of the classic HOTEL EPI 1959 in Ramatuelle that recently got an upgrade. Okay okay okay… The 'new' hotel has a bit of a high threshold but if you bring your back straight, your lips pursed and your wallet filled, you'll love it! Epi 1959 is one of the most legendary hotels right on the equally legendary beach of Pampelonne, on the Cote d'azur. That resulted in a bit of faded glory… Read more

Not far from Saint-Tropez, in the lush greenery of Cape Lardier, the new hotel distinguishes itself Lily of the valley is quite different from the well-known not so special hotels that tourists here generally find absolutely fine. Hotel Jerome, Aspen

Hotel Jerome, Aspen

If you think we're only talking about sunny places, you're wrong! We spotted more than one gorgeous snowy addresses but Hotel Jerome in the imaginative Aspen is really a top one. And a classic. The historic hotel is a concept in the vast area. During the heyday of Aspen's silver mining industry in 1889, the reason the area gained its wealth and fame, a hotel was built in response to all the great European hotels of the time. Hotel Jerome immediately set the luxury bar sky high: it was the first Western hotel with a working elevator and one of the first buildings to be lit with all-electric lighting. The historic charm combined with (contemporary!) luxury is still unprecedented. Mountain hut meets eclectic interiors and heritage. Enjoy

Ett Hem, Stockholm

Ett Hem, Stockholm

'Eet Hem' is Swedish for 'Home' and that's what it is. The Swedish luxury hotel has 12 rooms, is located in a neighborhood just outside the small city center (and still very central) and was decorated by the same lady who was responsible for the Olde Bell Inn in the English Cotswolds (also recommended!). The rooms are all beautiful, but go for the largest duplex room with the freestanding bath. The staff understands service, it is super chic and yet wonderfully comfortable and the hammam in the basement is irresistible.

Hotel COQ, Paris

Hotel COQ, Paris

Either Collection Of Quality, a young hotel and also very affordable hotel in Paris. To start with the big one: thanks to the somewhat out-of-the-way location of COQ in the 13e arrondissement on the edge of the St. Germain district, a few nights' lodgings won't break the bank for a change. Mind you, for Parisian design standards, that is. Not that COQ is inferior to its more expensive fellow Parisians, not at all. In terms of interior, the hotel is an eclectic clash that is somewhere between the living room of, say, Garance Doré (at least, that's how we imagine her living room, chic yet playful and full of plants and vintage trinkets) and a modern gallery (art, art, art). A group of young Parisiennes will be waiting for you when you enter and one of them will accompany you to your room while chatting. There are fifty of them, rooms, and all different. Incidentally, you will pick up the best tips in the up-and-coming area during that chat from the check-in desk to your room.

Hotel Monteverdi, Tuscany

Hotel Monteverdi, Tuscany

A hotel that at first glance seems a lot quieter than the rest of this list and is a good example of how colour and design for dummies copy-paste into your interior. Straight lines, lots of white, colorful cushions and rugs, a single ochre yellow and soft green bedroom (check the Aeneas suite), a red-and-copper freestanding bath, a sea-green lounge and a bright-pink kitchen. What’s more, the hotel is the best possible version of ‘Ik Vertrek’: the American couple who opened Monteverdi in August 2012 read an article about Tuscany and left. Without ever having been there before. They ended up creating a collection of three villas, a seven-room hotel housed in a restored 13th-century chapel and a café-restaurant. It’s located halfway between Rome and Florence, in the heart of the Val d’Orcia – the most beautiful part of Tuscany, according to the Unesco Heritage site.

Henrietta Hotel, London

Henrietta Hotel, London

The youngest (English) design darling of the bunch, in the heart of London and almost fully booked since day one. Not surprising: the hotel is a picture and the area around the Henrietta Hotel is exactly where you want to be in London.

Brummell, Barcelona

Brummell, Barcelona

Copy-paste, GO! Barcelona seems like a city where you hardly see the inside of your hotel: so much to do and see, so little time. Until you book at Hotel Brummel. Handsome boy who joins the rooftop swimming pool with 30 degrees on the counter. Or from the beautiful lobby, the restaurant or from one of the 20 beautiful rooms. Much of the inspiration for Hotel Brummel comes from Sri Lanka, in particular from architect Geoffrey Bawa and his 'tropical modernism' - remember that name and that term. The 'Sri Lankan' objects go more than well in the mix with European antiques, Nordic design, Moroccan details, lots of plants and contemporary art from local artists.

Brummell, Barcelona

Okay, okay, okay… This one, the British Trematon Castle, you can only rent privately and that is not a feasible task for most mortals. We know. But since the entire castle was taken care of down to the smallest detail by the family behind the (insane – we are big fans) The House of Hackney, it has to be on this list. The castle was already a picture from the outside thanks to the unparalleled (English) gardens (with swimming pool, just google it, delicious) and since 2021 it is also crazy inside. Prints everywhere, pink sinks, colorful art – everything perfect. Give us a one-way ticket to Trematon Castle please!

The goodtime Hotel Miami

The goodtime Hotel Miami

Back across the big pond for a moment. We are also quite fond of the crazy 'bubble' that is Miami. Read here: Barts Best of Miami. But then also about the new The Goodtime Hotel. You will find this hotel just outside the hustle and bustle of South Beach in Miami. A real oasis to have fun and just enjoy life. Simple, right? Exactly. But what makes it even more fun is that Pharrell Williams and David Grutman are the men behind the hotel. And interior designer Ken Fulk helped decorate the hotel. There is a cheerful and relaxed atmosphere around the hotel and we here at Bart are certainly not averse to that. And… The hotel has no fewer than 266 stylish rooms and seven floors, making the hotel the entire block takes up.

Parc Broekhuizen, Leersum

Parc Broekhuizen, Leersum

Closer to home and also an address where we could sleep (and therefore earlier on Bart's Booklet sung) and an address that deserves its place in this list, although a bit quieter formal and casual looks than the rest. The old Broekhuizen castle has a huge history and has been undergoing a major renovation project since 2012. In December 2019 it was festively opened and we can only say: it is a pleasure to stay here. Amidst the sweet soft light pink / brass armchairs, the surprising carpets and stair runners in combination with the authentic preserved elements, it is very nice to stay in an oasis of peace in the middle of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug.
