The Gin Sum Club (Zijlstraat 49)
Uh yes, the first time we walked in here, we (SORRY) immediately turned around. Too tight. Too posh. That couldn't be right, right? In the middle of Burgundian, cozy Haarlem? Unknown means unloved, and yes, we are guilty of that sometimes. Missed opportunity because the next time we walked through and it turns out: The Gin Sum Club is much slicker than we imagine for an evening in cozy Haarlem, but they do it well! And that's what it's all about. In the fancy bar of course gin, gin and gin on the menu (what's in a name), but also four courses for 40 euros, eight courses for 69,50, and everything in between. This includes lightly smoked salmon, with hoisin cream, asparagus, crème fraîche ice cream and fennel. Black Angus with mushroom tapenade, roasted beet, hazelnut cream and parsnip. Scallops. Salad with lobster. And more where that comes from. Tasty? Yes. All. TGSC

Olive Tree House (Lange Veerstraat 11)
On holiday in Haarlem? The Olive Tree House. A bit of Greece, actually. The restaurant in the Lange Veerstraat is open all day, but the evening hours are especially recommended at the Olive Tree House. To continue with the recommendations: the starters! Grilled scallops. A bird's nest of puff pastry with chicken and a homemade cheese sauce. Tuna tartare. Yes. Yes. Yes. Olive Tree House

Nolita (Lange Veerstraat 17)
Also in the Lange Veerstraat, already a very pleasant street with a brasserie a little further away Seymour, also a winner, opened the door behind it Café Colette a new pizzeria. A pizzeria+ of course, in the atmosphere you would expect from the beautiful Café Colette. A stylish, Brooklynesk (read: hip in a good way) restaurant with a bar where you may have to wait before you can get a table, but where you might as well sit at it all evening. The pizzas are absolutely great. We don't do anything about it anymore, but we mainly walk away with the sweet, attentive, fast, correct but funny staff. The mortar (Nassaulaan 1)
Hip and happening in Haarlem, we heard from an insider. Ha! We had to be there. And guess what? It's true, and Le Mortier is fun too. Upon entering it may seem a bit cool and chilly, but appearances can be deceiving. The ambiance is great. Nice and young and fresh in approach. Super enthusiastic, neat but nice 'loose' service. Excellent acoustics and not too many tables, so you can sit comfortably and understand each other well (so often underestimated and yet so important). Gift from Edje
Attractive lunchrooms and coffee shops abound in the center of Haarlem, but there was not yet a nice sandwich shop, you know, for an actual sandwich. Enter Kadetje from Edje. Just the name alone. Keileuk. And tasty. And Organic. Because 2017. Gift from Edje

Grow café (Kleverlaan 9)
An asset to the Haarlem Bomenbuurt, that Kweekcafé. We like it there, even without children. Because yes, it is, certainly also thanks to the City Nursery Garden in which the café is located, and thanks to all the games that are scattered haphazardly through the café. There are homemade lemonades, there is carrot cake, there are sandwiches, the piano has been tuned, there is a mini offer (read/borrow a book, instead of that rattling on your phone #notetoself), the location is fairly central with a ten-minute walk from the Central Station and you can also stay there all day with a laptop. Finally, the atmosphere is also very good (nice and uncomplicated, don't make things difficult, they don't do that at the Kweekcafé either). Anyway. Top spot. Grow café (image on the left @briekiet)

Cups & Leafs (Zijlstraat 54)
You read that right, a tea bar in Haarlem, and on the nicest catering street in the city, the Zijlstraat. More teas are served in the beautiful, bright room than you could imagine. High quality Oriental teas, in both classic and modern varieties. Drinking on site is allowed, you can take it with you, but you can also have things packed (and this is done with care). If you think it ends there, you're wrong: there is too Dim Sum, there are wraps, there are 'Gongfu Tea Parties' and there is matcha (!) there is a divine chocolate cheesecake. You want it. Building 13 (Kruisstraat 13)
Building 13 in the Haarlem Kruisstraat is - in my opinion - exactly what you expect in Haarlem: a cozy café with tip-top snacks to share, on a board. During the day it is lunch, in the evening it is a dinner of the aforementioned small dishes, all under the heading 'burgundy', the Dutch equivalent of 'je ne sais quoias long as it's fun'. Oh, and good. And a lot. And that's it. From organic Kagyu Meat, halloumi, squid and Peking duck to everything that is served to you at the Chef's bar, Pand 13's Chef's table: on a bar stool at the beautiful bar with your nose almost in the kitchen.
