The best of Haarlem and the surrounding area
Before we get started here, take a look at this list (also): New (and not to be missed) in Haarlem, because that is our so-called evergreen to which we add Haarlem news again and again. But great Haarlem and those timeless classics that you could otherwise easily miss, well, they deserve a separate list. Of which deed: The best of Haarlem and the surrounding area.
Of course, we cannot include all addresses mentioned above New (and not to be missed) in Haarlem Listing here would be crazy. So with the knife to the throat we call it alone Frenchie, we indicate where you can eat, sleep and have lunch Madam Garage because it is and remains the very best lamp collection (if you don't have time to go to the studio, you can also order them custom-made online). Do you always want to join in? Cleeff walk in because it has always been so wonderfully uncomplicated, just like Wolkers. Of course the extremely popular one Native Haarlem. You can find goodies for home at de Butcher's daughter, a stone's throw from the train station: it is the address for the tastiest sausages and best sandwiches (also vegetarian!) in Haarlem and is a household name in the Zijlstraat By Lima. Colorful, vegan dishes were already on the white lacquered tables here before it was hip. No jacket-tie with it restaurant De Zeeuw from chef Jeroen de Zeeuw. Fancy is the restaurant, because of Jeroen's qualities, but otherwise everything is nice and informal. Tasty, fast and affordable is often music to the ears after a day of exploring the city and usually leads to pizza and pasta. Voila: Nolita.
When you say Haarlem, you actually say 'beach'. In any case, the North Sea is not very far away and a day at the beach is easily arranged from 'Klein Amsterdam'. Bloemendaal aan Zee, Zandvoort, Velzen-Noord, Wijk aan Zee… We'll just lump them together for convenience. We think these are the best addresses:
The Republic of course (Bloemendaal), the most beautiful beach bar in the country. And the hidden, unknown, you-can-only-get-there-on-foot beach pavilion Fosfor, or our discovery of 2021. Kayuca Zandvoort is the youngest of the well-known Zandvoort list and you are only as good as your last win, right? So we call Kayuca here (because it's actually a bit of a mess in that corner. Nice? Yes. More of the same? Yes). Tijn Akersloot should not remain unnamed either, just like Aloha And we would also like you to look through this list: the nicest beach bars in the country.
The area around Haarlem is green and there you will find those individual pearls that you just want to visit. Are they coming:
- Plantation Rococo - a no brainer on every level. Beautiful place where everything is right and where you can stay or just have breakfast, lunch or dinner. Or have a party there! Perfect place for that. Read more about Plantation Rococo
- Country estate Plantation Vogelenzang – before Plantage Rococo, the owners already ran Buitenplaats Plantage Vogelenzang. Not for sleeping, but for dining and shopping. Awesome (and so beautiful) and, above all, sustainable place. Read more about Country estate Plantation Vogelenzang.
- You can also shop and sleep (but not eat) at Sanne aka @enstijl. The family hopped around Haarlem a bit until early 2021 when they opted for it eggy settled down: in addition to their own home in Vogelenzang, she runs one here corporate shop (Atelier enstijl) and a luxurious guest suite (Sleep enstijl). - You can get there easily by bike from Haarlem (car is also allowed). Farm Duin & Kruidberg was also recently extensively renovated. You will find it on the dunes, a stone's throw from the picture of Landgoed Duin en Kruidberg. Would you like to bring kids along? On to the Farm. Would you like to enjoy a delicious, extensive dinner, castle style and just be pampered in the old-fashioned way? The Estate is your man.
- We would like to go for an extensive lunch in the green Boschbeek in Santpoort-Zuid. Water puddle check, classic menu check, just very nice, check check check.
- Brood with you? Tap Leak. Without a doubt. Read more about Tap Leak.
Always a good idea: into the Kennemerduinen. Here you will find a truly wonderful holiday home, completely hidden: Bosvilla Kennemerduinen. And in any case it is a beautiful area for walking or cycling. Just like the Dutch Waterline, part of which can also be found here. Read more about the Dutch Waterline. Or set course for Beeckestijn for a beautiful walk. The same goes for Dune entrance Pale en Berg and Buitenplaats Elswout (near Bloemendaal).
Well, whether we have sensitive noses. A nose for a nice wine, yes. And to 'good' news in-town. We are excited when we can put both words in one sentence: a new (part one) wine bar (come it: part two) in Haarlem.
This brand new wine bar was named South North. Why? We'll park that for a while and come back to it later. What you especially need to know is that it is new, nothing more than the most delicious glasses of organic wine is served and that you are really comfortable there (in the conviviality of the city, but at a good corner away from the hustle and bustle and the tourist traps, let's call that bonus point part three). Three times 'win' is a charm? On to Natural wine bar & Bistro South North in Haarlem! Read more
You can also dance in Haarlem. At Bobbi's it's Disco, with a capital D. Think Abba hits, disco balls and a photo booth. And that's a great place to go if you're over 30. And of course younger is also allowed. The cocktail, nice people and swing hits are ready for you. Another nice thing - for the no longer night owls among us - is that it is fun early. Can you just go to bed at twelve o'clock?
