Amsterdam North | a list of favorites

Amsterdam North | a list of favorites

It will come as no surprise that we regularly travel to Amsterdam North for experimental, surprising and innovative restaurants. Is so. And so this corner of the city definitely deserved its own article: Barts Best of, the nicest and tastiest bars and restaurants in Amsterdam North. Quite a long list, and you came across this article precisely because you have a shortcut wild, right? It's okay. Then take a closer look at:

  • Barracuda – Uncomplicated large restaurant, delicious fish dishes
  • Europizza and / or Restaurant Europe – Not only for Team Building. And don't forget Benelux bar for your cocktail/dancing fix.
  • Bacalar – Delicious – not your usual – Mexican
  • Restaurant de Mark (Durgerdam) – Holiday in one evening
  • Slope 7 – Special place, delicious food
  • Corner store – Music & vegetables
  • Golden Pheasant – all time favorite and a true classic
  • Cafe / Restaurant – Metro
  • Poppy
  • FC Hyena

Europizza

Europizza

First of all: don't let that name – Europizza – fool you. Europizza in Amsterdam North, on the Gedempt Hamerkanaal, is anything but your ordinary pizza place.Certainly there are also pizzas, of the more than excellent kind, but if you sit down in the industrial restaurant, you will immediately be presented with very tasty, original starters. Antipasti, primi and dolci, but with only things from the area. And: everything is stoneware. Of course, the sourdough pizzas that made the business famous are still unmissable; once an emergency measure during the corona lockdown, baked in a brick oven in Zaandam, frozen very quickly and then sold in trendy shops in Amsterdam – a success. Although we are even happier with Europizza in Noord because it is here to stay.

FC Hyena

FC Hyena

FC Hyena – brilliant name that arose spontaneously because the owner simply had those exact stamp letters in his possession. Financing was also an option, we read the Parool. Fhinac too. The FC? That stands for Film Club. The fact that there is also a Thai football club called FC Hyena is a coincidence, which is nice when you look up the # on Instagram - it is a small cinema, a movie house actually, with a petit bistro, a restaurant actually. Give the creature a name.

And since its opening in 2016, FC Hyena has been an established name in the north. And it turns out to be one steady factorthat you can always rely on and that never disappoints. In addition to the delicious film offer (which you can enter with your wine glass, no plastic hassle), there is plenty to taste in the culinary field...

Mostly vegetarian, a bit of meat or fish.

We love crossing the IJ. Especially in good weather, it is wonderful to spend time by the water with a beer in hand and preferably plenty of tasty snacks to go with it. One of our favorite terraces (and restaurants) in North Amsterdam is IJver, right in the middle of the iconic NDSM shipyard, where you can choose from as many as 80 different beers (or something else delicious from the extensive menu). You can come here for everything (yes, really, everything!). On the sunny terrace, you can sit down for breakfast, dinner, and everything in between. Bad weather? Then you can head inside all year round in the industrial and unique building or onto the covered and heated indoor-outdoor terrace.

IJver has a distinct cuisine where the charcoal BBQ and Hibachi BBQ (a Japanese grilling method) play a key role. For the main course, you can choose the sirloin or sea bass from the grill, for example. And, off the grill, the ravioli. The fish is fresher than fresh, the sirloin cooked exactly how you like it. From innovative flavor combinations to comfort food and classics. Oh, and preferably homemade and made with top-quality ingredients too. Just really good food without the fuss.

Gebr. Hartering is one of those restaurants that has been doing what it does for a long time, and this list is intended for those types of things. Nice to join you here again! Rugged French cuisine, and to be honest, this does not necessarily make the restaurant everyone's friend. The menu is small and if there are just too many gnarly, coarse dishes on it, you may not find something you like.

Of the same, long time favorite French (although slightly more accessible), sheet a suit, is Kaagman & Kortekaas. A restaurant in the heart of Amsterdam. French menu, rough (but tasty) dishes, a very nice one no bullshit business and a brilliant night out. Kaagman and Kortekaas

Cabbage, the restaurant in the striking red building, can still claim a place here. Original, vibrant, young and friendly, that's what we said before and we still say that.

The Seafood Bar

The Seafood Bar

You already wanted to go to The Seafood Bar on Amsterdam's Van Baerlestraat (in South), diagonally opposite Vondelpark, for just about the tastiest fish & chips, oysters, sea food and lobster (and lobster soup), which a lot of people did too. Do. We get it. While many seafood restaurants still feel a tad stuffy, The Seafood Bar has managed for years to keep top-quality fish surprisingly accessible. Just a few oysters at the bar, a tower of fruits de mer with friends, or a plate of steaming fish & chips on a weekday Tuesday. Anything is possible. In the meantime, the Brabant natives (= always good news) behind the fish shop (well, fish-plus actually) have opened three more Amsterdam locations of The Seafood Bar (two in the city center and one in the South), and even locations in Utrecht and London.

At The Seafood Bar, nothing but delicious food, and everything as sustainably as possible. That is important. Green energy, minimal waste, they purify their own water, and cooking is gas-free. And of course, sustainably caught fish, knowing that fish stocks always have a say in the fishing. Additionally, they are affiliated with the Good Fish Foundation, these not only guarantee the process, but also investigate how it can be improved.

House of Noa

House of Noa

House of Noa is a restaurant in the Japanese category, but we wouldn't dare call it traditional. In the historic catacombs of the Beurs van Berlage, you take a seat at the start of your evening for an intimate dinner. Intimate? Yes. Due to the dark space, stylish details, and tranquility, we would certainly call it intimate. And the menu complements this beautifully: a whole bunch of small bites. to share you order, with Japanese cuisine as the overarching theme. Think: tuna tartare, black cod miso, and Peking duck pancake. They cook with seasonal ingredients, and artisanal temaki (a form of hand-rolled sushi) takes center stage. If you then stay long enough on Friday or Saturday (until 21:30), the place is completely transformed into a club (time to partyThe atmosphere becomes much livelier, the DJ gets to work, and the drinking really kicks off. Only to continue into the early hours. Want to experience a club night like this? Then you have to become a (free) member of House of Noa. It makes it all even more mysterious.

Oh hey hello Trees! The guys who are also behind the popular Gertrude restaurant in Amsterdam-West (also a favorite), opened their second Grande Dame on the Zeedijk, in the center of Amsterdam, not far from Central Station. On the ground floor of Trees, a changing menu of 4, 5 or 6 courses is served. Sometimes even an extra course or two; how lucky is that. Downstairs in the bar you are welcome to come and eat à la carte. Only a cocktail or a glass of wine is also perfectly fine. Good news: you can also have lunch there from Wednesday to Sunday. Brioches from their own kitchen, with varying toppings. Success? Mega success!

Dutch Pancake Masters

Dutch Pancake Masters

We Dutch hop on the train to Paris for the best pain au chocolat, drive to Brussels when craving a warm waffle, or fly to Japan for a traditional matcha. But in Amsterdam? There, we simply walk right past the best pancake place. Even though it is just a three-time roll from Central Station. Literally. Dutch Pancake Masters is exactly what you need for a day in the capital: a good base, with a touch of culture. The interior looks like a mini-Rijksmuseum; Van Gogh and Rembrandt on the walls, your pancake on a painter's palette. Kitsch? A little. Fun? Absolutely. You can find them at Damrak 44, and if the sun is shining even a little, chances are you'll find us on the terrace. Most likely with the master's special featuring fresh fruit, pastry cream, pink glaze, dark chocolate drops, a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and fresh whipped cream. Yum.

Center | The Jeweler

Center | The Jeweler

Were we at Bistro de la Mer or de The Jeweler? Both more than OK (in fact: both in our personal top 5 in Amsterdam), both from the same owners. If you ate fish, it was probably Bistro de la Mer, otherwise it was a door away at De Juwelier. Both on Utrechtsestraat and the perfect mix between bistro and chic. In this gem of a restaurant you can enjoy lunch and dinner, where chefs Richard van Oostenbrugge and Thomas Groot (ha! Famous names!) will provide you with the most delicious dishes. Not the least chefs, the duo already had two stars to their name with restaurant '212'. The menu is not large, but what they have on it is more than good. More than good. And so more than enough.

Center | 't Westerhuys | All day

The people behind Dutch Pancake Masters have opened a new restaurant on the Prinsengracht. At 't Westerhuys, you can enjoy good old-fashioned Dutch food. And strangely enough, we don't see that very often in Amsterdam anymore. Fair is fair: modern Asian fine dining of Latin American fusion It might also sound just a little more exciting than stamppot. But secretly, there is something nice and familiar about a simple plate of Dutch food. And we really aren't looking forward to all that fuss every evening (or usually not even). What does that delicious Dutch menu look like? Exactly as it should be. Stamppot? Check. Lekkerbek? Also. Chicken, fries, and applesauce? Yup. Classic uitsmijter? Check. And the desserts? No half measures. Apple pie, tompouce, and poffertjes are served with love. Seven days a week, you can drop by from 08:30 to 21:30 for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and everything in between.

City Center | Ku Kitchen & Bar

City Center | Ku Kitchen & Bar

At Ku Kitchen & Bar On Utrechtsestraat, it's all about Japanese fusion with a modern twist. Think fresh sushi and sashimi, but also signature dishes such as miso rib-eye and their famous sliders. Classics are simply on the menu, as are a strong selection of sake, Japanese whisky, and cocktails.

For a hearty appetite, there is the Tori Bento or a well-filled sushi platter, and vegetarians are well catered for here too. A relaxed spot on Utrechtsestraat where everything feels just a bit more contemporary than your standard Japanese. Very much so. itadakimasu this makes us.

Center | The Utrecht Cross-Table

Center | The Utrecht Cross-Table

From the Utrechtsestraat to the Utrechtsedwarsstraat. At De Utrecht cross table Dining here feels like joining a good friend: casual, cozy, and with delicious food. The menu consists of five or six courses (it's up to you), and for those interested, a wine pairing that is simply outstanding. With the finest local ingredients, it is always a feast on your plate. The atmosphere? Warm, homey, with a touch of quirkiness. Think crisp white linen, red candles, and an old piano strewn with wines, while the house Shar-Pei Chiara lies relaxed in the center.
Host and owner Hans provides a flamboyant touch and makes the party complete with his wine knowledge and enthusiasm. Whether you come as a couple or with family or friends, you are in the right place for a dinner that you will remember for a long time. Cheers, or as Hans would say: Goi-ga!

Center | Café de Klepel | dinner

When someone asks what our favorite restaurant is in Amsterdam, we always mention it De Klepel in the Jordaan. Small, brown, cozy and stoneware. Simply never had a bad experience in the brown café on the corner of Prinsenstraat in the middle of the Jordaan. One of the reasons is chef Job, the man at De Klepel (formerly Librije) for many years. And then Job, together with friends and former colleagues, Wout, Tomas and Joost, opened a business that they themselves were missing in Amsterdam: Attic Amsterdam. Naturally included further down this list.

Center | De Willem

Center | De Willem

Willem lives in that big white one triumphal arch (Amsterdam style) aka The Willemspoort, at the end of the Haarlemmerdijk. Well, actually, it was never (isn't) called that; you probably know it better as the Haarlemmerpoort. If you cycle from the city centre towards Westerpark, you would hardly notice it, but there is a small but very lovely terrace by the waterfront. With a view of Westerpark, and all the good things about De Willem.

De Willem features a relaxed all-day café (right at number 66 as you enter) and a slightly more fancy restaurant (on the other side of the gate at number 58). We already had a drink at the café bar (nice!) and are now heading out onto the terrace starting in May!

Pizza Beppe

Pizza Beppe

If we don't go to Naples, Naples will simply come to us. At Pizza Beppe, you'll eat authentic Neapolitan pizzas: handmade dough, San Marzano tomatoes straight from the Vesuvius region, and Fior di Latte that's truly exceptional.

With nine locations spread across the city, you can always find a place to sit down. The atmosphere? 'Cool & fine dining'. Culture, music, lifestyle, and pizza from top-notch stone ovens. Add plenty of craftsmanship and passion to that, and you're all set. It is not without reason that they were the first in the Netherlands to have the official Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana (AVPN) quality mark – no concessions, only authentic.

Buon appetito!

Never underestimate the power of a real good one 'American Dinner'! Restaurant Stacks Dinner you are in Amsterdam-West go-to when you 'engage' with this (and so we did): very good no nonsense dishes from American cuisine.

This fantastic, inconspicuous business is located at De Clercqstraat 32. No arrogant staff or excessive fuss here. No, at Stacks Diner you simply eat great and have a great time. On the menu classics from the southern United States, southern food if you like. The looks are, as the name suggests, inspired by an American one diner: lots of red, low lighting, and an inviting bar. We ate slowly cooked meat dishes, screams and comfort food in the best way possible. Fan, and we will be back soon.

Thai Thai Figure, in an inconspicuous residential area in the Amsterdam Baarsjes and on the Van Speijkstraat (in a side street of Jan Evertsenstraat) in Amsterdam-West is highly recommended, and not only for anyone who 'just' likes Thai. Nope, Thai Thai Poppetje is definitely recommended for those who want to eat good and healthy food, preferably without meat. IIn the kitchen stands the mother of one of the owners, a born and bred Thai. Half the profit. From her kitchen come items such as fried panga fillet with sesame seeds, lemon juice and galangal with homemade sweet chili sauce, simple noodle bowls (perfect for those with kids).

West | REM restaurant

Fancy meets fun and all that high in the air with new ones food destination R.E.M. Restaurant REM that is. On the iconic REM island, a group of experienced catering entrepreneurs recently reopened the doors of the completely renovated REM. A restaurant, bar and rooftop in one. Ha! From a cup of coffee to a 6-course meal fine dining dinner to cocktails or dancing; it's all possible. And especially because of that great location and good vibe, it should not be missing from this list.

And REM is not the only cool roof terrace in Amsterdam! These are the nicest roof terraces in Amsterdam

Downstairs you can enjoy surprising cocktails and ditto bites. You can enjoy one floor higher fine dining with matching wine(en). You can choose between meat, fish or vegetarian.

She, and then 'she' is the people behind Café Beurre Amsterdam, were not yet open or we were already smitten on the lovely blue-and-white interior of the small, initially inconspicuous business in Amsterdam's StaatsliedenTurn. Café Beurre is located on a corner there, with a partly covered terrace, on the Van Limburg Stirumstraat. Good news, because we didn't have anything like this in the area before. Something like that? Yes. A restaurant with nothing but vegetarian dishes and a heck of a wine list. For the vegetarians and certainly also for the non-vegetarians! That's how it can be done.

By the way, that also includes tripping three times from Café Beurre Chez Nina: everything is vegan here and highly recommended. Read more about Chez Nina here.

And there's more news: the people behind Beurre also opened Le PETIT Péché.

Speaking of 'always good', 'great with large groups', 'also for kids' and 'consistently good, fun and tasty': Café Restaurant Amsterdam. Opposite the watermill in Amsterdam-West, not far from the Westerpark, you are always in the right place, rain or shine (if the weather is good, there is a top terrace, wonderfully sheltered and next to a small water). The place is large and the menu is packed with French classics. Can such a large menu be any good? Yes! Is it. Because the kitchen staff here has been making these French classics for years and they know exactly how to serve them simply but deliciously (as befits French cuisine). Best cuisine on this list? Not necessarily. As said before, always good, fun and delicious? Yes!

First there was bar glouglou, a wine bar on a square in the shadow of the Oranjekerk in the Pijp with only fin natural on the menu. Uncomplicated and an instant hit. But no one-hit wonder: the people from the wine bar went to West and opened a second success there, wine bar with restaurant this time, Bar Central. Both in name and in terms of design, the place seems to have decided to stay under the radar as much as possible: black studded linoleum on the walls, pub furniture and dimmed lamps. However, the food transcends the everyday: simple, well-priced pub dishes with names like 'potatoes with brown rice' turn out to be brand-new, balanced plates with some of the tastiest things we've eaten in a long time. And that in an inconspicuous Amsterdam pub on a corner in Amsterdam West.

Café Conrad

Café Conrad

In a cozy and quiet side street of the Overtoom, nestled among the trees and just around the corner from Vondelpark, you'll find Café Conrad, a charming neighborhood café. The corner building itself is a beauty: arched windows from top to bottom, cheerful flowers adorning the window frames. During the sunny months, colorful retro chairs adorn the terrace, and the charming retro style continues inside with old Dutch white furniture, vintage wooden bar stools, cast iron lamps, and, of course, the games cabinet.

The menu offers a taste of local dedication during coffee, breakfast, drinks, or dinner. The menu isn't overly elaborate, but it's good and full of character. Various homemade dishes are available. pies, fresh sourdough bread with jam from the neighbor or soup What's the day's theme? Moritz, the owner, sources everything he serves locally, perfectly embodying the motto "From the neighbors, for the neighbors." The atmosphere? Relaxed enough to crack open a book, just as cozy for a game with friends, or a candlelit dinner. South | Caffé Pico + Café Caron | lunch + dinner

South | Caffé Pico + Café Caron | lunch + dinner

To be honest, we were a bit skeptical beforehand Caffe Pico... Because yet another 'beautiful white people place' in the Pijp (I know, sometimes we are whiners), and – to be fair – we have to say that Caffé Pico more than caught up (even before we met) during the evening. Really nice place, really good food, really nice service (although we have to say that a few tables next to us were a little less lucky in that regard). We were particularly pleased with the delicious pizza and the simple but incredibly well-executed Italian starters. Nice terrace too. The fried zucchini flowers are highly recommended, and you REALLY shouldn't forget to use the toilets, party there! Caffe Pico

Oh, and just because we have already mentioned the Caron family a number of times in this list, Café Caron does not get its own block on this page, but that is the only reason.

Loop51 | The Pijp | lunch & brunch

Loop51 | The Pijp | lunch & brunch

Yummy to tune in it is certainly at Loop51, on the sunny corner of Dusartstraat. The brand new brunch bar has been there since November last year and is doing great. Not surprising, because the interior, the records played and the all-day brunch are spotless.

The atmosphere is relaxed, and when the sun is shining, you can also sit comfortably on the terrace. And about to tune in spoken: with the sound system is nothing wrong by the way. The line-up of vinyl DJs changes weekly – and records are played from different genres. Dub, hip-hop, house and everything in between – and those records go surprisingly well with the fresh salads, buttermilk chicken en egg dishes.

Oh, and in the evening the chairs are moved aside, and everyone knows what that means…

South | Sjefietshe | dinner

Sjefietshe. Huh what? Ceviche the Amsterdam way. You-know-who that dish with fish marinated in citrus juice. The owner of Sjefietshé missed his favorite dish on the Amsterdam menu and decided: what is not there, can still come. So there: Sjefietshe. The name already has an Amsterdam twist, as do the dishes. But the joke is: even if you don't like ceviche, you will have a great evening at Sjefietshé. Score a spot at the bar – these are always the best places, including here – and occasionally let the barman waiter serve you something you didn't know you wanted to order. Success guaranteed, every time. Sjefietshe

South | Wils | dinner

South | Wils | dinner

Suppose you really want to eat out, but not in a stiff restaurant and preferably affordable too. Where are you going in Amsterdam? We recommend you Restaurant Wils, the latest love of top chef Joris Bijdendijk. Joris, right, from Restaurant RIJKS, and his team cook in an open kitchen over a wood fire. That open fire produces small dishes with surprising compositions and special flavors. And an atmospheric vibe with a view over Amsterdam South. What makes restaurant Wils different from other restaurants is that open fire being cooked. And that fire, the smoke, the steam produces special flavors. The wood stove is a grand version of the stove that Joris used to learn to cook on at home. And although the Bijdendijks' kitchen may have been a lot less professional, Wils certainly has a cozy kitchen feeling. It does something to you to see the activity and passion in the kitchen. De Kleine Bes, in an awesome corner building in the Dapperbuurt, is our new favorite. You are welcome there for breakfast, lunch, and drinks, and they also serve a few hot dishes. The menu is small, but very nice. Just like the interior: a warm, living-room-like farmhouse atmosphere (because, yes, lots of nice vintage stuff from France) with blue paneling, a cozy bar, and seating of all shapes and sizes. Exactly the kind of neighborhood spot where you spontaneously linger. Orange wine on tap and, for those who want it, a delicious daily special in the evening. And yes, that rhymes. Oh yes, and they have a sunny terrace, and all day long at that.

Old love never rusts. Where Roest (you know it from that little beach, among other things) was once a raw, creative hotspot, you can now pull up a chair in a stylish restaurant where candlelight and white tablecloths contrast perfectly with that lovely warehouse vibe. Think: a large industrial building with a mouth-watering interior, various spaces (so plenty of room), and a relaxed atmosphere. At Roest, dinner tastes just as good as drinks at the bar — and that’s exactly what we’re in the mood for.

Boring man, that Zeeburgereiland corner there... Wrong! Because here you can join one of our new city favorites: restaurant VRR Amsterdam. This large business was located in the old ship shed where Rosa & Rita used to be (VRR also stands for Former Rosa & Rita - we think it's nice). Ah! There! Correct.

And we want to be at Restaurant VRR. Because of that rugged location (where you can also park comfortably, but where you can also easily reach the city center by bike - win-win), because of the neighborhoods with City bakery As (in the same building) and because of the excellent dishes based on nothing but Dutch ingredients.

If you are not yet convinced, please know that the 'neighborhood with' city bakery As is no coincidence: Restaurant VRR comes from the founder of restaurant As (aha, top alert) and is related to Hotel de Goudfazant (high score). And did we mention that there is a very, very nice terrace?

Amsterdam East already has a lot to offer, but there was certainly still room for a small, cozy and cozy café with high-quality culinary dishes and a delicious wine list. In the middle of the Linnaeusstraat, the street that is already full of nice cafes such as De Kuijper, Five Brothers Fat, De Biertuin and Louie Louie, you will find Neighborhood café de Tros. The entire neighborhood, or from the wider area, can sit down here for a good meal or a nice drink.

The interior is to die for: the well-known Bruno Rey chairs, the... picture-perfect green wine cabinet at the back of the store, the long table candles that burn all day, the bar that you want to hang at and never want to leave or the long sofa on the wall, everything has been thought through. And you can also say the same about the menu: from small snacks to larger dishes and the (already well-known!) smash burger, you can go here for every occasion. It is also very nice that they also serve the menu for lunch during the weekend. So if you're looking for something other than a sandwich or bouncer, this is it your place to be.

A very beautiful and soothing indeed The Durgerdam is the name. The location went from inn to hotel to café-restaurant and back to hotel again. Enjoy peace and quiet at De Durgerdam, with its culinary centerpiece restaurant De Mark.

Hotel check, but what's the deal? Restaurant De Mark opens at the same time as the hotel. At this restaurant, dressed in natural tones, they cook locally, fresh and seasonal. With the crackling fire next to the bar, a nice wine cellar (guaranteed good wines) and a terrace on the waterfront, you will never want to go back to the city again.

In the former Diamond Exchange you will find  City’s Kitchen, where art and design breathe. They cook there exclusively with local, seasonal ingredients. The result? An extensive menu with something for everyone. From a delicious bouillabaisse to ribeye from the Hardebol nature farm in Landsmeer.

Artist Maarten Spruyt has gone wild with the interior design and stimulates all your senses. His works of art each tell the story of the human anatomy. For example, the tables are not just tables, but unique works of art that depict different organs with colorful patterns, a special detail that contributes to the creative atmosphere. His work is also playfully reflected at the bar and the melted disco ball hanging over the railing completes the party.

City’s C is modern, artsy and a great place for a lunch during working hours, networking drinks, dinners in large groups or just a stylish dinner date in the center of Amsterdam. The wine flows freely, and that certainly tastes like more.

City’s Kitchen is open from Monday to Friday
